“Best excursion of our cruise!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2014

Book this tour now! I would absolutely do this again in a heartbeat. The helicopter ride was fabulous, beautiful views! And I fell in love with the dogs at the camp. We did a whale watching tour in the morning and the organizers did a great job of transferring us between excursions. Worth every penny.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I always like to hear from passengers that manager to fit in several tours throughout their stay here in Juneau. It can definitely get tricky with the early or late port calls and the all aboard times that seem to be just too early to fit in that one extra trip, but for passengers willing to be flexible with their schedules, it can be very worth their while. The most commonly coordinated tour is the one you went on, the whale watch and helicopter 'combo' and we're happy to work with all the whale watch companies here in Juneau to make shuttle transfers work just as smooth as your's did.

Thanks for telling everyone about your unique experience!

“Opportunity of a lifetime”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014

When we decided to go to Alaska, we realized it may be a once in a lifetime experience. If you can afford the trip, spend the extra however much to do the top excursion (in my opinion). It is the most expensive excursion I could find, but it really is worth the price (and I am pretty cheap). You can save a few $ by booking through excursion sites or the company website directly as a regular traveler and NOT through the cruise itself. The cruises say they can guarantee you won't miss the cruise leaving port... you are on the same tour as everyone from the cruises- they aren't going to bus you separately. To them, there is no difference between you and anyone else from your cruise ship. Their times align with when the cruises embark and disembark- you have to be a moron to miss your cruise disembarkation.

However, DO spend the extra few bucks to do the extended tour. The difference between the dogsledding and the glacier walk add-on is so nominal, I was surprised to see that most people didn't do the glacier walk. When dogsledding, you are on the snow part of the glacier- you don't see the blue parts, the ice formations, or anything like that. The scenery is beautiful with the mountains, but it is no different than any other snow on a mountain. The big difference is when the pilot lands you on a bright blue ice-field and walks you through a remote area- we personally were able to go right up to 2 glacial waterfalls; IE) icy glacial cliff over another block of blue ice with running glacial water. There we actually drank the water right from the glacier itself. Of course, meeting the dogs, doing the dogsledding, flying through the mountains and glaciers, and being a part of the culture and the scenery was indescribable too. The helicopter guide was friendly and welcoming, and the tour itself was really once in a lifetime. Don't try to penny pinch during experiences like this; the difference in a couple hundred dollars could actually be the difference between a once in a lifetime excursion, or something that was just 'nice' to do.

And FYI- you can do a similar tour in both Juneau and Skagway; beware that they often have to cancel these tours due to the unpredictable weather conditions. If you are on a cruise and going to multiple cities with this type of tour, my suggestion is to book it at the first port and have a back-up plan. To my knowledge, there is no real difference between this tour in the various ports, so do yourself a favor and book it for the first port, then see if you can move it to the next port if the weather doesn't cooperate on the first day.

Thanks for giving some excellent advice to future travelers!

You're spot on with our feelings regarding the difference between the basic Dog Sled Tour, and the Dog Sled Tour with an Extra Landing that we offer. The Dog Sled Camp itself is a magnificent experience, brimming with energy and enthusiasm, it's tough not to enjoy that part of your tour, and the snow field where the camp is located is an amazing sight to see for everyone, but the true surface of the glacier is buried under layers and layers of snow and is only visible at the lower level of the glacier, where you have clear running water and beautiful glacial movement frozen in time. It's fantastic to hear that you enjoyed your tour so much, and I hope plenty of other take your advice!

Thanks for leaving such a great, and verbose, comment!

“Highlight of our whole trip!! DON'T MISS IT!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

Simply the most amazing experience and the most awesome sight when we landed on a glacier. It is just like the pics on their site, white, aqua blue, sparkling, crunchy underfoot, and not cold to be there on a sunny day. The neatest tour I've ever done- between my first helicopter ride, going up over very high snow covered peaks and finally the glacier. All the staff were great,on time pick-up and flight and our pilot was so informative and congenial, made the experience that much better. Now I'm planning another helicopter tour.

Thank you for telling the Tripadvisor community how your first helicopter flight went!

And thanks for letting us help make that happen! First flights can always be a little nerve-wracking especially if all your preparation and research doesn't line up with your actual experience, so I'm glad that our efforts to pick authentic, actual representations of your helicopter flight and landing location helped you enjoy your experience with us! It's also great to hear that you had a good time with all our staff, who are essential to making your tour as memorable as possible.

We'll keep the blades turning for your next visit!

“Wow! Just Wow!”

Amazing views on our flightseeing tour. The pilot took us over glaciers and we landed on top of one! After some instruction of wearing spiked snow shoes. We hopped out of the helicopter and got to walk around on the glacier. Our guide was fantastic. It was kind of pricey but after our whale watching experience we were happy

Thanks for leaving us your opinion of the tour!

It sounds like you got to view our beautiful state both from the air and on the water, and I'm happy to hear that both were such a big hit for you and your party! The boots definitely make the walkabout quite a bit more enjoyable, though they do take some special advice and time to get used to them. Helicopter tour prices are quite high compared to other tours, but in the end, as you got to experience, it's well worth it!

Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts with us!

“This was the highlight of our Alaskan adventure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014

My wife and I did the Vancouver to Whittier cruise recently aboard the Coral Princess. At Juneau we decided to do the dog sledding at Herbert Glacier. It was a wonderful experience and the highlight of what was a pretty amazing holiday. The staff were fantastic from the moment we were picked up from the cruise boat. I have been on helicopters quite a few times and here in New Zealand we have some pretty awesome scenery but this flight to and from the dog sledding was like nothing else, it was amazing. Our pilot was Dane who was very informative and friendly, he even managed to show us a couple of black bears moving along the mountainside on our return trip. The dog sledding on Herbert Glacier was just fantastic. Jordan and Joy were great, thanks for an absolutely amazing experience.

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a comment!

We always like to hear from passengers who have some other experiences with helicopter tours in other parts of the world so we can see how we stack up, and it's fantastic to hear that we're the new top of your list! The dog sled visit is a real treat all by itself, and we really feel that the helicopter flights to and from the camp add a special perspective to the whole experience. Dane, Jordan, and Joy all really love their work, and I'm happy to know that it rubbed off for you guys!

Thank you for sharing your trip with us all!
