“OK for tiny kids, grandma and grandpa”
Reviewed 9 August 2013

We booked this excursion through our cruise line. I wasn't expecting much based upon the description, but even with that attitude I was disappointed. Many of my family members started out terrified, but by the end of this float even the kids were like, "that was it?" The lake itself and the glacier were beautiful, but it went downhill from there. Most of the trip was spent in a small river with one entire bank backing up to peoples' back yards. The only saving grace was the efficient staff and the interesting guide. Even the guide admitted that the biggest rapid was about a level 0.5. It ended with this tremendous rush to find our shoes and return gear. The professional pictures were very expensive and with not many rapids, pretty boring.Overall, pretty disappointed.

Thank you for taking the time to review our tour. We are sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations. Mendenhall Glacier Float Trip is the name of our tour mainly because we promote it to be more of a float than whitewater rafting. All our marketing materials promote this tour as having Class II and III rapids. It also tells people to join a paddle-raft team if they want more adventure. If you join the paddle-raft team, the large metal frame for guests to sit on for the float is taken out. The boat then flexes down into the dips of the rapids and guests will definitely get wet. On this float tour, you should be able to see great views of the glacier as you float down the river and you will also be gliding across the ice-berg studded lake. -K.Grummett

“Mendenhall Glacier Float, Juneau Alaska”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

We just returned from our Mendenhall Glacier Float. We called to find out what kind of excursion this was prior to selecting it. It was advertised as a "white water rafting" excursion with level 3 and 4 rapids. It had two sets of rapids that were no where near a 3 even, and the rest of the trip was spent floating down a calm river that ran through a residential area. We were told we would be right up near the Mendenhalll glacier also. But, we were at least a mile away!!! Plus the food that we were told we would get at the end of the trip was disgusting. It is definitely not worth the money you pay and very falsely advertised. If you are looking for white water rafting, a trip to view the glacier and wildlife, don't do this!!!!

The Alaskan style snack consists of salmon pate, reindeer sausage, pepper jack cheese and crackers along with apple juice. We also have beer and wine and our signature cocktail “Martha’s Mendenhall Madness” for sale. -K.Grummett

“Fun Float Trip”
Reviewed 23 July 2013

We chose this excursion because a few of my friends had not been white water rafting before and wanted to try it out. This was definitely a float trip as the rapids were level 3 maximum as we did not paddle at all. We took a bus to a lake where we were given boots and water pants so we did not get wet. Our guide was very informative and told us all about her life, goals, and Alaskan adventures. We did go by an iceberg and the guide but a piece off and we all took a bite which was cool. The trip down had lots of interesting things to look at. At the bottom, there were snacks and we got all our personal items back as well.

“Fun but overpriced”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

This float trip was way overpriced for what you got. After a bus ride to the lake below the glacier we were greeted with another bus of tour folk, which caused some mayhem. The port-o-potties at the site (4) did not have any toilet tissue to speak of (the guys said that was the fault of the park). After two bus loads of people clamored for their overalls and boots I was left with boots that were too big and overalls that were too small because they were out of things that would actually fit me. My husband and I were interested in rowing our own raft, but that too was not an option as only one raft was left. Once we got into the boat we floated around the lake VERY far from the actual glacier. It was my impression that we would be going up to the glacier. The guide gave us a consolation of floating up to an ice burg and checking it out. Neat, but not as neat as seeing the glacier closer would have been. After some fun rapids (level 3-ish) we floated the rest of the way down to the picnic area where there was some scattered (albeit VERY YUMMY) salmon dip with cracker and veggies to munch on before the bus ride home. On a positive note, I really enjoyed our rafting/floating guide and thought he was well versed in the local culture and the ecology of the area. My suggestion is to forgo this trip and take one of the shuttles to the glacier if that is what you are interested in.

“Mendenhall Rafting trip”
Reviewed 25 June 2013

My best friend and I took a cruise to Alaska almost 30 years ago and our Mendenhall Rafting trip is one of our fondest memories. The stopover during the rafting trip was so much fun and the snacks and the Mendenhall Madness Cocktail (original recipe) were so delicious. We plan on having a little get together and take a trip down memory lane re our Alaska experiences while drinking the Mendenhall Madness Cocktail!
