“When in doubt, ride the ferry”

The ferry is an excellent, guaranteed way to travel in southeast Alaska. When the winter storms pick up, the planes stop flying. The ferry, especially the Taku, will always be there!

“Way to go”

One should always try the AMHS at least once. It is the way to get around in Alaska for many Alaskan living residence. Coast Guard approved sailing vessel. Not a foreign owned run cruise ship. You will be a happy camper in more ways than you know.

“Actually took the Fairweather”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2013

I can understand why the Alaska Ferry has been called the "poor man's ferry". I traveled R/T from Sitka to Juneau on the Fairweather, the fast ferry, a 4 1/2 hr trip. What an enjoyable experience! The ferry is spacious, modern, MANY amenities, moderately priced food (or you can bring your own). Comfortable seating is available in various areas, There is bistro type seating around the snack bar area. Interactive maps tracking the location of the ferry are in various areas onboard. There is even a "quiet" area with plug in's for your laptop or smart phones. The children have a little "theater" room with child appropriate movies.

“The friendly little ferry”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2013

Took this smaller ferry from Ketchikan to Wrangell, and three days later from Wrangell to Petersburg. Foggy midnight passage through the Wrangell Narrows was an eerily beautiful experience. This ferry has fewer amenities than the M/V Columbia (cafeteria, but no dining room, e.g.), but a more intimate feel. Loved it!
