“DIAMOND IN THE RUFF”

This s a great hotel with all of the amenities of a 4 star. It is clean, with great service and has a great restaurant probably the best in the area. The location is convenient to sightseening, night life, and town center. The staff was very helpful in planning local trips and sightseeing.

staff was helpful and friendly. we had a lovely private birthday party which reflected the best of the staff attendance and attention. The hotel is centrally located. It is across from a dynamite sport clothing store.

Our first room was the size of a shoebox. Worse, we could hear our neighbor – who was not being unusually loud at all – talking, coughing, playing the radio. The walls were paper-thin. In need of a decent night's sleep, we decided to be needy tourists and ask for another room. To be fair, the front desk was very friendly and seemed happy to move us to another part of the hotel. We were moved to a room several floors up that only had one neighboring room, rather than two, so we really appreciated that response. I don’t know whether we actually had any neighbors up there, but it was quiet and we were able to sleep soundly, so thank you to them for that. However, this room was also incredibly small (I am not exaggerating when I said we had to turn sideways to walk around the foot of the bed). Worse, the bathroom looked like a dingy motel, and the bathroom door juuust barely fit in the frame … if you jammed it in … which meant that every time we wanted to close the door, it took a forceful, loud slam (and for that, we apologize if we did have any neighbors up there!). There were also a few stains on one of the towels as well as on the sheets (they appeared clean, just stained). This hotel is old and there is nothing luxurious about this place. Another important point is that there is no central or local air (there is a window, but it has no screen), and it was uncomfortable warm and stuffy inside (even though it was a temperate lower-60s outside). And our only resolution was a cheap 12-inch table fan. Sigh… We only stayed a couple of nights, but having seen two rooms, I assume we got a pretty good idea about the general state of the hotel, and we’re pretty shocked that this place gets any good reviews at all, given that it's the most expensive place in town. The location is great, the staff nice enough, but we’d never stay there again at the price. If you choose to stay there, definitely take the advice of other travelers that say you can request a room with a view - we did not have one, and that might have redeemed the room somewhat...

Room Tip: Our room was on the back side of the hotel, which was quiet, but also darker. Call the hotel directl...

Two good things about the Barnof....the location and the helpfulness of the staff. (Special thanks to Bella.) The hotel itself is pretty much what you would expect at the Holiday Inn in 1950....very basic furnishing. We did have a harbor view , which was nice.Breakfast was fine ( try the reindeer sausage) but I definitely opt for other better restaurants for other meals.

Room Tip: Definitely book directly with the hotel...the staff is very helpful as to the most desirable room ty...

Recently stayed at the Baranof while in town for a wedding. While it is probably the best option in town, it has a few drawbacks: no air conditioning which was needed more for soundproofing than for cooling, as the street front location was a little noisy (ask for a fan- we had one but others staying there apparently did not). Bathrooms need updating as do the rooms, which are basic but expensive (as everything in Alaska seems to be expensive). Ask for a view room on an upper floor- we had a great view of the water. The staff wasn't particularly friendly. Breakfasts in the Capital Cafe (part of the hotel) were OK but I'd suggest trying other local spots like the Silver Bow bakery for bagels and the Rookery for breakfast burritos and biscuit sandwiches.

Room Tip: Upper floor, ask for a view room

Everyone there was so very helpful. Hotel is quaint and it you get a room as we did towards the top, the scenery is to die for. It's located near absolutely everything you might want to do. Shop from the locals as they also have great sales. Everyone is wonderful and I will miss Tracy's crab place; best fresh crabs in the world that we've experienced. Then right near is where you can get awesome reindeer sausage sandwiches and sweet Smiley's popcorn. Cruising there is great, but spending a week in Juneau gives you the chance to experience all you wish to see, buy, eat, people, etc. The Westmark Baranof also has a wonderful restaurant and the food is fabulous. I can go on and on. I will miss so many wonderful friends we met there, especially our sweet Smiley. Love you Juneau and love all of the people there. Wonderful experience!

Room Tip: The higher levels are where you get the beautiful scenic views. Large room and spotless.

Great location , ten minute walk from the cruise port, right in the middle of the tourist trap in Juneau. Very professional and courteous staff, clean and updated rooms, great restaurant inside , good food and great breakfast. Ten minute taxi ride from and to the airport. Great view of the port and mountains surrounding the valley. Good restaurants and shops within walking distance. Love the way nature surrounds the place.
