I had not had pelmeni before, so this was not only a delicious experience, but a new one as well. The chef was informative about the food, fast, and friendly. The decor wasn't much to speak of, but it had that comfortable beloved-hole-in-the-wall atmosphere, complete with a large collection of vinyl records you can play. The portability of the food is a definite bonus.

Very small, cheap hole in the wall, only serving only Russian dumplings. You have the choice of either beef or potato, but they were out of potato the night we stopped by.
The dumplings were quite tasty with butter, hot sauce, curry powder and served with a side of sour cream and a piece of rye bread to sop up the juices.

Large serving size, and only costs around $6 .

If you want a interesting snack, at a reasonable cost, this is the place to try.

Sometimes you just want to eat on the run. Pel Meni is a great little spot where you can get a filling yummy meal in under 5 minutes. They only serve Russian dumplings, meat or potato. It's so good! Hot, rib sticking dumplings sprinkled with curry and topped with or without sour cream. I get it with. I've been here many times after a hike up mount Roberts, perseverance trail, and the mendenhall. They have a record player on site and a slew of LP's to choose from if you wish to pick your own entertainment . Sit by the window and people watch, always fun especially if the cruise ships are in port.

While coming back to the docks from Mendenhall Glacier our bus driver pointed to a little blue strip mall to the right and said we could find some excellent Russian dumplings there at Pel Meni's (one would hope since that's what the name means). We were immediately interested due to the Russian heritage of parts of Alaska's (not necessarily Juneau). We walked back to the building after being dropped off and walked into an eclectic, simple diner. They only had one item on the menu and they did it well. The Pel Meni was very good, and very reasonably priced at $7. Drinks were equally reasonable at a $1 a piece. It was great to eat at and support a place that is not a tourist trap (ahem, Red Dog Saloon).

The reviews from Yelp on this place made it sound interesting - and it was. The food is pretty average, dumplings (meat or potato) served with curry powder and sour cream, but it was filling and tasty enough. The internal ambiance was very "funky college joint" as opposed to "cruise ship zone" where it is located. I'll bet this place is wildly popular with folks at bar time.

The music was great - they have a massive collection of vinyl and spun old records the whole time we were there. Seemed more like hanging at a friend's basement than being in a restaurant - but if you don't mind "funky/eclectic" it's a fine place.
