On our day in Ketchikan as part of an Inside Passage cruise we decided to 'step out of the everyday' and signed up to snorkel in Alaska. We come from Australia so this was definitely different to snorkelling there.
The tour guides were friendly and very helpful and assisted tour participants in getting into and out of wetsuits when needed. There was also plenty of help in navigating the slippery rocks down to the water.
Sadly the tide was in and visibility was poor, however, we were rewarded by having a humpback whale swim past us and flick his tail into the air not too far from us. The starfish and sea life was colourful and the guides provided interesting information. I was a little concerned about how cold it would be as I don't even swim at the beach in Australia where we live as I don't like cold water.
The wet suits are great although I found mine heavy and restrictive in my movement. This is necessary though to insulate against the cold. One hour in the water was enough for all of us and pouring the hot water into our wetsuits afterwards while we were still wearing them was bliss.
There is definitely something quirky in saying that you have snorkelled in Alaska. My husband has already been 'bragging' about this experience.
Would I do it again? Probably not but my husband and son loved it. Go do it for the experience and you will be able to brag to your friends and family that you snorkelled in Alaska. A definite conversation starter for any dinner party!
