“I don't call this botique”
Reviewed 31 May 2010

The guidebook called this a botique hotel and made it sound charming.
I was not charmed. It's old, not remodelled. Very small rooms, no elevator -- our room was on the third floor. The sink was in the room, not in the bathroom. Handwashing in the middle of the night guaranteed to wake up your spouse/partner. On the plus side, the desk clerks were friendly, the room was clean and the location good. Another minus, noise from the bar next door. And the Internet was not working. But the price was good. On balance, I'd look for another place if I go back to Ketchikan.

I pretty much have to agree with the other travellers on this list. This is not a great hotel. The hotel is in a very old building, the pipes rattle and make a lot of noise whenever someone in a neighbouring room is taking a shower. The walls are paper thin and you can easily hear people next door. My window had a crack running up it that had been sealed up with duct tape. That being said the room was clean and warm, the staff were friendly, the mattress was comfortable and the wireless internet worked reliably. In addition Annabelles restaurant down below was a treat with a decent beer selection and excellent clam chowder. The place was also right downtown near at least five other bars. So if you're looking for somewhere cheap (I paid $70 bucks) and somerwhere close to the bars I'd recommend this place.

The Gilmore Hotel staff and amenities were fantastic! We are planning a return trip, and look so forward to walking thru the doors of the Gilmore and feeling the wonderful sense of history that you get when staying there! The staff are truly wonderful people, and we look forward to seeing them again soon!

On a question * Would you recommend this hotel to a friend? I said Yes but I was sort of a doubtful on this. I didn't have a really good room here, it could be cleaner at least. Hotel appeared a bit messy. Great bar at the ground floor. Superb location. Expensive, due to shortage of hotel rooms in Ketchikan in summer.

The Gilmore Hotel was better than expected. The pictures on the website dont do it justice. Our room was very nice and the faucets do work just like they do in the lower48. We had a room facing the bay and the breeze at night made the room very comfortable. the complimentary cookies were always a treat and the continental breakfast served from 6:a.m to 9:a.m. was always adequate and fresh. The convenience of location with everything in easy walking distance made our stay much more relaxing. The hotel staff always made sure we had transportation on time to and from the float plane docks and to and from the Ketchikan airport. The noise from the saloons on the street were only a problem one night and it only added to the experience instead of detracting from it. we would definitely stay there again and i would recommend it to anyone. And in fairness to the hotel and guests if you dont like stairs you may not want to stay there. the rooms are on the second and third floor but are easily accessed. And if you want a room with a view of the cruise ship docks and the bay be sure to specify that when making your reservations.

Despite some negative reviews, I opted for us to stay here two nights while visiting Ketchikan. It is very centrally located--a big plus and reasonably priced (given Alaska's rates). We initially made reservations for a two-Queen room, as we wanted more space. On arrival, we found that instead we were assigned a two-twin room as the other had been previously promised. My husband complained as we had not been notified of the need to change the room thus necessitating another floor walkup, with luggage, and less space. As a result, the staff did reduce the rate by 50%. We were there during a heat wave, and with no AC, the room was hot. A fan was immediately provided. Pluses were the free Wi-Fi, which worked well, and the continental breakfast in the adjoining Annabelle's Restaurant, which (unlike some continental breakfasts) had a variety of items to eat. We had no view from our room, but if you don't plan to spend much time in the room, this works fine.

I don't really understand where the basis lies for the complaints about the Gilmore. Sure, its a dated hotel, with no elevator, old heating, and smaller rooms (some with great views, mind you). You're in Alaska- so if you want 5 star, head to a 5 star resort/hotel.

The Gilmore is a genuine hotel, authentic and definitely an Alaskan atmosphere. The attached restaurant is considered by many locals as one of the best places in town for seafood (try the Captains platter or the dungeness/king crabs! amazing). A retired local fishermen let me in on that...

Having stayed there several times, I'll definitely be back- nice folks, free shuttle from/to the airport ferry, and conveniently located across the street from the only shop you'll need to visit while in ketchikan.

One last thing- its right on the harbor. So the cruise ships are constantly in and out, and you'll hear the float planes most mornings.
