“As Expected”
Reviewed 16 July 2007

We stayed one night at the Trail Lake Lodge in one of the motel rooms. These rooms are not on the main road or over the restaurant so the only noise issues we had was people moving on the wooden walkway in front of the rooms. The last arrivals came in around 11 PM and people started moving again around 430 AM. Typical for Alaska in the summer.

The room was small and basic. The bathroom was small, but not overly so. Both were clean. There were only four channels of TV, but that wasn't a big deal. The big deal was the bed. We had a double and since it was pushed up against a wall, it was terribly uncomfortable for sleeping two. You can get a room with two twins, but who wants to that when traveling with your spouse? I think there might be some bigger beds in the lodge rooms, but I can see how those rooms might be fairly noisy as another reviewer mentions.

Overall, the Trail Lake Lodge was just what we expected, a small basic room with no amenities and a small bed. We paid $99. For that, we got what you can get for $99 a night in Alaska in July.

We would stay again based on the place being clean and the price, but would take the two twin beds. If you want a quick stop between Seward and Anchorage or Whittier, the Trail Lake will work. The restaurant was good and the room did have good black out curtains.

Stayed here one night. It is a family run business which is nice. They seem to work very hard to keep the business going. It has a full service restaurant downstairs with breakfast, lunch and dinner and a full bar. We only had appetizers which were tasty. They also have a pool table. The place (I think) is non smoking which is nice. The music was always at a low level which made the rooms (which are above it) quiet for the most part.
The rooms are VERY BASIC. It had a queen bed, a single bed and a small chair/couch. TV in the room gets about 4 channels and you can control the heat in the room which worked great. The bathroom only had a very small stand up shower and toilet.
There are no ammenities given at this place, which is no big deal as we knew beforehand, but don't go thinking you'll have soaps and shampoos and lotions complimentary. Bring your own.
Bed was comfortable and since we had a room facing the road the road noise was a bit distracting, but oddly enough hardly a single car passed after midnight. Carpets and bedding were worn and the room was not inviting. With a little money and some furnishings, you could make the rooms much nicer.

They had a sign tied to the railing of the hotel which was outside of our room which flapped all night long in the breeze and constantly woke us up. This should be taken down or repositioned.

Not much to do in the town as it is a very small one. Plan on hiking some of the many trails in the area.

If your travels take you here, I would suggest asking for a room in the main lodge facing the water. This way you have a view of the lake and the mountains instead of the road.

  • Liked — the views are amazing at this place, loved that it was run by a family who seemed very dedicated
  • Disliked — rooms need sprucing up. Bathroom was way too small, needs new bedding, carpet, etc...

We stayed here because there were no room available in Seward. And I was glad we did. At first scared to stop at a semi motel next to the highway, I was gladly surprised to find a cozy and charming place next to a wonderful lake. It was extremely safe, the food was great and the staff just adorable. The rooms are not fancy at all, but they were confortable and warm. Just don't carry too much luggage because it's difficult to get it upstairs. Just loved it. Thanks!

  • Liked — Charm, location, scenery
  • Disliked — Carrying the luggage up the stairs
  • Tips/Secrets — If no rooms in Seward, stay here. Enjoy the views and the lake.
