We drove up from Anchorage to participate in the Nenana Ice Classic Dog Weight Pull. The decision to do so was last minute and thankfully I discovered the Fireweed Roadhouse. Due to our late departure our arrival time was 11 pm. Despite the late hour, the owner waited up and welcomed us in with some friendly conversation.
The home cooked breakfast and coffee hit the spot. The owner tended to every need we had and was an easy conversationalist. He had a busy schedule that morning as he was working alone while his wife was away. During breakfast we shared the general gathering area with a BBC film crew that was on an extended stay at the Fireweed Roadhouse while filming a segment on the Nenana Ice Classic, which will be included in a series they were doing on Alaska.
The pet friendly environment was both unexpected and a blessing especially when we woke up to -1 temps. Their mini Yorkie (Betty) made her rounds and was one of the best behaved small dogs I have ever had the pleasure of being around. The relaxed atmosphere made the long journey and the excitement leading up to the pull all seem like a breeze as we felt as if we were amongst friends.
In a world that seems to be dominated by the rules and restrictions of corporate/chain operated business, the Fireweed Roadhouse stands out and brings back memory of a time when things were less complicated, people were friendlier, and the pace was a little slower. Thanks for a remarkable experience Fireweed Roadhouse!
