We drove up from Anchorage to participate in the Nenana Ice Classic Dog Weight Pull. The decision to do so was last minute and thankfully I discovered the Fireweed Roadhouse. Due to our late departure our arrival time was 11 pm. Despite the late hour, the owner waited up and welcomed us in with some friendly conversation.

The home cooked breakfast and coffee hit the spot. The owner tended to every need we had and was an easy conversationalist. He had a busy schedule that morning as he was working alone while his wife was away. During breakfast we shared the general gathering area with a BBC film crew that was on an extended stay at the Fireweed Roadhouse while filming a segment on the Nenana Ice Classic, which will be included in a series they were doing on Alaska.

The pet friendly environment was both unexpected and a blessing especially when we woke up to -1 temps. Their mini Yorkie (Betty) made her rounds and was one of the best behaved small dogs I have ever had the pleasure of being around. The relaxed atmosphere made the long journey and the excitement leading up to the pull all seem like a breeze as we felt as if we were amongst friends.

In a world that seems to be dominated by the rules and restrictions of corporate/chain operated business, the Fireweed Roadhouse stands out and brings back memory of a time when things were less complicated, people were friendlier, and the pace was a little slower. Thanks for a remarkable experience Fireweed Roadhouse!

Was heading from Fairbanks to Denali on mini road trip / college scouting trip with kids. We stopped in by chance and stayed a couple hours for late dinner in midnight sun summer. Fantastic pizza and drinks. Robin came over and chatted. Within 1/2 hour...we were looking over their photo albums and talking about our families. Spent a long time filling out / doodling in the guest book. One of the most friendly places I have ever been to!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

On our way back to Healy from Chena Hot Springs, we decided to stop at the Fireweed for dinner. I ordered a burger, a 1/3 pounder, and my husband ordered the chicken strip burger. Both were absolutely delicious! Our burgers were huge! Must have been the biggest 1/3 pounder ever! The meals are served with your choice of sides, we both ordered the soup, very good! Big chunks of all kinds of vegetables. The food is very well priced and the restaurant feels very homey. We were the only ones for the majority of our meal and we had a great time visiting with the owners, and their new 7month old Yorkie puppy named Betty who was super cute! Anyone traveling through Nenana would be wise to stop and eat here!

After a long day in Denali we began to drive north toward Fairbanks, but as we called ahead to a few hotels we realized it would not be so easy to find one. We were tired and just started looking for anyplace we could find when we stumbled on this. The host, Robin, is a great lady. Sorry I cannot remember her husband's name. We got a private room with bath. In addition to rooms Robin runs a restaurant. We did not eat there but it seems to be pretty popular with the locals (or maybe they were other guests). I am happy to be the first to review the Fireweed and would recommend this stop to anyone who likes to stay "off the beaten path".
