Nice place to stay more like a B&B. Would stay here again! Most of the negatives covered in other Reviews that I agree with. But over all Nice stay!

All in all a nice little place to stay. Our room had a queen bed and a jetted tub. It was clean and comfortable and nicely furnished. It had a bit of a bed-and-breakfast room feel to it.

The sound proofing could have been better and noise travelled pretty easily between rooms.

Also, our room was on the second level and required ascending a narrow and somewhat steep, steel fire-escape like, staircase and opening a door with a key at the top. This can be tricky with two people and a couple handfuls of luggage as there is not really enough room to set down a bag and open the door. This seems like an accident waiting to happen.

I found it to be a pretty good value, and would definately go back.

If you want someone to hold your hands and give you room service, the Colony Inn isn't for you. There's no front desk, and you pick up the key at the nearby Valley Hotel, about a 5 minute walk away.

But if you want a tremendously classy inn in a great location for touristing, with decent restaurants and a large supermarket nearby, the Colony Inn is for you.

It's a converted teacher's dormitory for the resettlement colony of the 1930s (and the small, but must-see, Colony House Museum is right across the street)---but the teachers never lived like this, with spacious rooms, cable TV, a small fridge, nice bathroom, and clean everything. The bed, while not firm, was certainly supportive of my chronic back pain.

There's a lunch-only restaurant on the first floor. The inn is a block away from the visitors center, next to the borough government building (itself, a rather poor rehab of the original colony school), and five minutes away from both fast food, "international buffet" in the Gold Miners Hotel (the buffet was uninspired, except for the all-you-can-eat king crab letgs), a nice book store, and the aforementioned Valley Hotel with its 24-hour restaurant featuring dozens of homemade pies.

The inn is about a mile from the fairgrounds (I took in the great state fair), and a 10-minute drive to the Musk Ox farm (worth the money to see this nonprofit in action) and 30 minutes from the sensational Independence Mine State Park.

Clean and classy---I highly recommend the Colony Inn.

The Colony Inn is part of the Valley Hotel (that's where you check in and get your room key). They're a block and a half apart. I chose the Colony Inn b/c I heard from locals that the Valley Hotel rooms are not as nice. Here are the downsides: (1) the rooms are small. Mine was about 11x11, fine for one person, but cramped for anything more. I saw larger rooms, but they cost $100 instead of $80. (2) The 'jacuzzi tub' was difficult to get in and out of. If you're short or elderly, the tub is annoying. (3) There is no one staffing the Colony Inn (besides daily cleaning). When you call the front desk, you get the Valley Hotel. Luckily I didn't need anything like an extra towel or toohbrush. (4) The phone connection was awful! I wished I had brought a cheap plug-in phone. I spoke loudly and it sounded like a whisper to my boyfriend. I could barely hear him as well. (5) A minor point: my room didn't have a full length mirror.

On the other hand, there were plenty of nice things about this hotel: (1) The rooms are beautiful! They have the feel of a B&B, but not overdone or frilly. Comfy bed, nice big TV with cable, one room had a fridge (but mine didn't), warm in cold weather, and well lit. (2) Bathroom is really nice, not old or cruddy. Good water pressure, hot water, clean tub and toilet. The downstairs sitting room is cute and charming! (3) The walls are thick, you never hear your next door neighbors or vice versa. However, you hear every hallway sound through the door as people walk by. (4) Very close to the restaurants and shops downtown. For delicious food, try the Valley Hotel Diner, it's 24-7. Check out the coffee shop Vagabond Blues. On Mon. and Wed. nights, locals gather there to play bluegrass. Look for Harold, who plays mandolin and violin, he's happy to chat with you and really friendly.

After a long day on the road, the Valley Inn was a welcome stop. Good rates, clean room and coffee availalble all night in the 24-hour restaurant.

Staff was accommodating--went out of their way to offer excursion tips and smiles June 2003.

Bravo!
