“Amazing place”
Reviewed 30 June 2011

The Knik glacier is in our backyard -- 2 hours from Anchorage, but we had only flown over it. On the advice of friends we spent the night at Knik Glacier Lodge and caught the tour the next morning. It is an awesome landscape and you get sense of the power of water and ice. We arranged with Tom, the owner, to be taken in on the morning tour and be picked up on the evening tour. That allows for a leisurely hike on the glacial morain and up the riverbed (we packed lunch and a bottle of wine!). The fact that we hit a sunny day at the height of the wildflower bloom helped some but it would still be worth doing in the rain. This is not a wilderness experience -- there is a lot of 4 wheeler activity on the river bed, but it still is an awesome place to visit, especially if you are visiting from Kansas!

“Seeing is Believing”
Reviewed 16 October 2010

The opportunity to get this close to a huge glacier should not be missed! We booked with Tom after learning about his tour via the Alaska Tour Savers discount book. With the 2:1 offering, we felt we couldn't go wrong on this tour that is normally $100pp. WOW - - to think that we only paid $50 with the discount, this was by far the best value activity we did turing our 17 days in Alaska this past summer (August/September).

As the other reviewers commented, Tom is very hands on and passionate about his life and this area of Alaska. He is committed to protected the natural beauty of the Knik Glacier area and enjoys sharing it with others. I personally hope he never loses that enthusiasm and dedication to the natural preservation of this area.

We enjoyed the four wheeling from his base camp (the tour office) to where he keeps the airboat docked. We also got to see salmon spawning in a shallow creek. Once on the boat, we headed for the face of the glacier. Seeing the small chunks of ice turn into larger chunks until we were right up to the gigantic icebergs was amazing.

Once docked at his Glacier Camp, we took the short hike (maybe a quarter mile?) up to the area where he had a picnic table, some tent style "cabins" and his food/beverage bear-proof container. We enjoyed hot chocolate and trail mix as we soaked up all that was around us. Unfortunately, while we saw plenty of moose scat, we didn't see much in the way of wildlife . . . just to resident squirrels who were interested in our nuts.

If you are looking to do just one think while in Anchorage/Palmer skip the musk ox farm and come here! You will not be disappointed.

Definately the best part of our trip to Alaska. The drive from Base Camp was an adventure in itself, travelling thru streams, river beds & dessert like terrain, Tom (the owner) and our guide provided several photo opportunities, including spawning salmon. Knik Glacier is spectacular!! We kayaked among the icebergs, my first time EVER...it was amazing! Relaxed at Glacer Camp, sipped hot cider while Tom shared stories of some of his adventures. Loved the story of his dog! Tom's rock creations at Glacier Camp are very creative.
I you are looking for a glacier tour - this is DEFINATELY the one to take.

“This tour and Tom, the business owner was...”
Reviewed 27 August 2010

This tour and Tom, the business owner was the highlight of our trip to Alaska. This IS THE BEST GLACIER TOUR. Tom stopped everywhere we wanted to take a photo, he shared stories, we kayaked amongst the icebergs!! Glacier Camp is something you don't want to miss as well as the many, many unique rock sculptures. He also has an on-site campground for those who are self-sufficient. He will tell you how to get to special spots such as Pioneer Falls. There is no hard hiking involved, unless you want to stay at Glacier Camp overnight... I'm sure you could find some challenging hikes, if that's what you wanted. THANK YOU TOM!!!
