My son and I stayed at Tim Berg's Trophy Lodge right on the Kenai. We wanted access to their private dock to fish for Sockeye without having to combat fish with the locals. We booked all of our charters with Tim including 2 days of fishing on the Kenai, a drift boat fishing trip on the Kasilof river, Halibut fishing out of Seward, and a flyout to Wolverine Creek to fish Silver and Sockeye while bear watching. Overall, an amazing trip!
The staff was courteous and well organized. Every afternoon we had our itinerary and maps printed out and waiting in our room. The food was excellent. I was actually worried about this part when booking, but my worries proved to be unfounded. The Trophy Lodge has a private chef and our meals were varied and tasty. From steak to all you can eat king crab - absolutely delicious.
I required internet access and I wanted to be able to use my AMEX card for the booking for miles and reward points. This was one of the few locations that had both full internet access (no additional charge) and allowed my booking on my AMEX.
Our rooms were simple, two beds with a private bathroom. I toured the other rooms while I was there and found a couple of suites that had full private living rooms with a TV and media centers. Most of those sleep 4 - so I would need a couple of extra people to book those. Overall, our beds were comfortable, the rooms were quiet, extremely clean and we felt well cared for.
The lodge has a community feel to it with a pool table room, computer access, and a shared dining area and living room areas. We went to Alaska to fish primarily, so we didn't spend too much time at the lodge outside of Sockeye fishing on the dock, meals, and of course, sleeping.
This is definitely not a sleeping trip.. it's a fishing trip.. and a couple of days we were runing on 4 or 5 hours of sleep. Because it was daylight most of the time and only dark a few hours a night.. it was hard to keep my head straight. If you are booking make sure you understand that fishing for Halibut happens in Seward or Homer and those are 2.5 hours away from Soldotna. So plan on 5 hours of round trip driving with that excursion. A halibut fishing day from Soldotna will be a 15 to 16 hour day. Plan accordingly and don't book an excursion the following morning, but rather book one in the afternoon. That will give you plenty of time to sleep in and shake off the long day on the Ocean.
As it relates to the staff - Noel was in charge of our lodge and he was always available to make changes, additions, or otherwise see to our special needs and requests. In addition, a staff member named Bree actually did our laundry one day for us because we were out and didn't have time. It was so nice to come back and have our clothes clean and folded on our bed. That isn't a typical service they perform, and Bree really went above and beyond by doing it.
In closing.. we loved our trip. My son and I had a great time together and won't soon forget how well Tim Berg and staff took care of us.
