This was our first booked fishing trip to Alaska. We didn't know what we were getting into. We looked at their videos to get a feel of it. Jim, our great host described it well. It is a fishing camp. But it is a clean fishing camp. We went to catch fish and we did. The guides they work with knew what they were doing. Everyone was pleasant They processed all of our fish, kept it in our personal freezer and prepped it for the flight back. This was huge. Because if it isn't right it can can you a bundle. All we did was fish, sleep, and went where they told us. it wasn't these best fishing year in Alaska, but we still brought home 175# of fish!! We met a lot of new people coming and going through the camp and Jim made our stay very worth while!!
It is not a romantic get away for couples, if that is waht your seeking, plan some other tour, but if you want to catrch a lot of fish and have fun with family and friends it is a good time!

This has been our 3rd opportunity to stay at the Funny Moose Lodge outside of Soldotna, Alaska. We have stayed in a different cabin each year we have been there and all have been clean and provide all the comforts required for a comfortable stay. All have the items needed for cooking your meals except for your food. Towels and wash clothes for your stay are also provided for both bathing and kitchen needs. Tableware and utensils are in each unit too. So basically all you need to do is stop in town and pick up what ever you would like to cook. Needless to say though that with all the great fishing trips to go on it seems that we didn't have to many days in our schedule to do much cooking in camp. Jim makes all the arrangements necessary for your charters wheather it be for salmon, halibut, or possibly a fly out trip to fish or sight see. Jim is the go to guy for whatever you might need. He goes out of his way to be sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. This year we caught red (sockeye) salmon on the platforms on the Kenia river right in the camp area. Along with the reds we landed a couple of dolly vardin. We traveled to Homer a couple times to go out on our halibut charter trip with Mark on his boat Northern Lights. Caught our limit of 2 each on both trips. Fishing this trip was good, although a little different than the past trips we have made. The king salmon run was down this year and silvers had not come in yet due to the harsh winter and cold run off not allowing the water to warm quite as early as it normally would have. We have visited at different times of the summer on all our trips to see which might be the best and have found all to be good. Our 1st time was mid June, 2nd was Late June early July, and our most recent was late July early August. I guess the time of year that you pick to go would be determined by the type of salmon you are wanting to fish for. June/July for Kings, late June thru July for Reds, late July to Sept for Silvers. Halibut seems to be good most all summer. I would highly reccomend that you check out Funny Moose Lodge web site and give them a stay. We have had a very enjoyable stay each time that we have been there and they are the most affordable you will find for a great trip to Alaska for fishing! Lou is the man that you need to see once you have made your catch for all your packaging and shipping needs to get it home.

4 guys, a van, supplies and fishing equipment. Rolled up to the lodge July 28th. Welcomed by Jim and given itinary for the week and the very few sensible camp rules One halibut trip, one float plane trip, 2 river trips. Charters were brilliant with limits on our target species plus some stellar "bycatch". The floatplane ut of high adventures is a must! Fishing at the lodge was steadily good once we learned how to "floss" the reds. Jim was an awesome host, fish filleter and raconteur, and captain Lou (another splendid character) did a terrific job on vacuum sealing. managing and tallying our catch. George (whom we met...) was most helpful on the front end when booking the trip, provided advice on timing, and even suggested we limit our charters until we see what we like. Other outfits may have quite happily booked us to the hilt while knowing we didn't need so much! Cabins were basic and comfortable and happily came supplied with linens, towels and even kitchen stuff like spices. It was better than luxury camping with a bed, roof, kitchen, hot water, gas grill and outdoor seating in an awesome setting Our fellow fish campers were all good people and the rapport was excellent. I heavily researched coming to Alaska for this trip and you absolutely cannot get a better bargain for a group of 4 than the funny moose lodge for a week with 4 charters. The vacation exceeded our expectations in every way thanks to the facilities, location, staff and organization of the lodge. If you didn't like this place then perhaps you should stick to the Holiday Inn in Orlando :):):)

Room Tip: we took what we got and didn't fuss a bit

A great place for a serious fisherman. Not a place to pamper your wife. The charter excursions were well organized with expert guides. Neat comfortable, basic cabins. Well organized system for shrink wrapping fish and freezeing them.. They pack them in insulated boxes for taking home as baggage. Great fishing on the river bank at the lodge. The best trip ever.

Room Tip: All are ther same.

This was another Fantastic trip to Funny Moose. George and Jim...Thank you for so much fun!!! The Salmon are monsters this year! Every time we come back we learn more about Alaska fishing. PEOPLE if you are looking for the Ritz Hotel this ain't it. BUT if you want a Fish Camp where you have the best bed in Alaska and all the fun you're looking for then this is the place for you. All you need to bring is your food and happy spirit. The people that you meet in camp are from all over the country and you become friends on fishing trips, that is awesome. No where else you can fish the Kenai River, have your Salmon fillet for $1.00 and walk to the processor to have your fish processed for travel. We are already planning trip Number 3. George, Jim See ya soon!!!

If I could rate this worse than terrible I would. The accommodations were filthy, we had to clean everything when we arrived. Mind you, I was there for the fishing not for the accommodations. There was no drinkable water and because of the intense smell of sulfur in the water the entire cabin if that's what you'd call it, half a trailer house, smelled so bad it was hard to be in there.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!!!

Room Tip: Bring your own cleaning supplies

It is hard to answer any review without knowing which cabin and who is writing it. We check most guests out by 9AM on Saturday and have all 10 cabins ready by 4PM the same day. However occasionally someone shows up early and we attempt to take care of them. This means a change of the linens, sweep and mop and get out so the guest can get in. We prefer and strongly suggest guests not show up before 1 or 2 PM to give us time to get the cleaning done properly. Every week someone shows up at 7AM at my door wanting to check in and we TRY to accommodate them if possible. Our cabins are wooden construction on concrete. They are not trailers. They are built to with stand Alaska's Winters and shelter our guests. They are basic cabins. PERIOD. They are not motel quality and some guests do not get that. This week we currently have 10 cabins booked and ALL 10 are return guests. Some people understand that we provide the cheapest Alaskan Fishing Vacation for a reason. We have taken great pains to show what we have on Youtube.com with embeds of video on the websites. The beds are comfortable, and the restrooms are clean. We did have some minor problems with a sulfur smell in the showers, but it does not permeate any cabin, the smell dissipates quickly in the bathroom. This was caused by an earthquake last year that was 4.6 and shook up the water table. We have installed filters for the water and drinking water in all cabins. NO person has approached me in the last month to tell me of any issues. IF a guest has a problem it is hard to deal with it if they do not tell us. I do not recall any one from Idaho of late from the Rigby area. I have staff on call almost every day that will gladly come in and re-clean a cabin if there is an issue. WE DO NOT offer daily house cleaning. You rent the cabin and it is YOURS for the week.

We were a party of 4 adults (2 couples) from Nova Scotia Canada. We arrived at Funny Moose Lodge May 25 and stayed for 7 days. Did not know what to expect but found this place to be the most economical so we booked it. It turned out to be great. It is a little out of the way in that it is located about 15 minutes or so out of town, but if your looking for a place to put up your feet and relax this place is perfect. Jim was great to work with. A real friendly guy that did everything possible to make people feel at home. He is the one responsible for booking salmon and Halibut fishing trips. He has been working in the area for quite some time therefor he is a great resource for people wanting to book other adventures as well. We got to meet George the owner as well as Lou, which owns a seperate lodge connected to the same property. They were all terrific and we all felt as though we made friends with the whole gang. There is a beautiful river just down the hill from the property where guests can go fishing as they please. There is also a bench where you can just sit and enjoy the view. I have to say that we as a group have absolutly nothing bad to say about Funny Moose Lodge nor the people that run it. We had lots of fun, met some great people, and we now have memories that we will cherish forever. Thanks for much for everything, we certainly hope to see you all again!!
