For a short 2 day business trip to Tianjin my colleague booked us in the Century Teda Hotel. The hotel building is a copy of the Belgian royal palace in Brussels and as a Belgian myself. I was quite curious about this.
The hotel is located 10 minutes from the Tianjin airport and therefore quite convenient for people who need to fly out early in the morning. As expected was very "Chinese" and the baroque interior was quite tacky, although the hotel was quite clean and reasonably well maintained. Check-in went relatively fast, although the staff do not speak much English and are clearly not that used to interface with non-Chinese guests. We booked a deluxe room for RMB 480 a night including internet in the room and b'fast (which I didn't try since my colleague told me it was supposed to be quite poor).
The rooms are very tacky but clean and would consider it worth of a 3star. The free internet is useful, but disadvantage was that there were only Chinese channels on the TV.
Overall service in the hotel was OK. The staff try their best and are even quite flexible in certain aspects: the first evening they opened the gym especially upon my request, despite the fact that it was not within the regular opening hours (which are only from 8.30 till 5pm or something). Gym was basic but alright. The massage parlor across the gym was however very pushy and clearly tried to sell their services to me as they were not busy at all.
One disappointment was that every evening I was called by the massage parlor whether I was interested in a massage "or something more". This was actually quite disgusting, as it was an internal service the hotel provided and they clearly were fully aware of this.
Besides this the beds were very hard and quite uncomfortable and as in most Chinese hotels the room was poorly isolated. My next door neighbor was making a lot of noise till late at night which kept me up for a long time.
In general I would not recommend this hotel. The price indeed is a bit lower than what you would pay in the Renaissance, the Radisson or the Sheraton downtown, but since the city centre is relatively close to the airport anyway, it is well worth paying the extra 2 or 300 RMB / night.
