The Baolijin Hotel is generally pleasant and modern, but the decor is incredibly garish. There was ornate gilt wood paneling and silk flowers everywhere; the furniture was a cross between Louis XIV and 1930s Shanghai. The hotel also houses a large theater where popular local talent perform comedy shows and a sauna/bath/spa. Members of the hotel's loyalty club are issued with distinctive pink silk pyjamas (short pants, short sleeves) which they wear everywhere in the hotel. The atmosphere is very much like a Las Vegas casino/resort, but of course no gambling. Management appears to have local rather than foreign guests in mind. There were no international channels on the TV, and even CCTV9 was not available although it was included on the list of cable channels offered. The use of long distance calling cards is blocked on the phones, and hotel phone charges are very substantial. Fortunately the Internet connection was good so I could use Skype.
