We had been looking forward to staying here for months, and at over Aud$1100 per night, had reasonably high expectations for the 8 nights we were staying.
We arrived Christmas day. After 25 frustrating minutes we finally located the driver outside the airport, not inside with the other drivers. Over an hour later we arrived and Wow! The gardens are large and beautiful though entering through the kitchen door past the electricity supply was weird (see photos).
The second half of our total party of 6, being 3 adults and 3 kids, arrived at 7. After being greeted by the staff (2 maids), we were left to our own devices, which I found even weirder. Luckily I’d bought crackers, salami and cheese from Australia (declared) so that was our Christmas dinner as after a tortuous ½ hour trying to get the security man to understand and order take away, we found they wanted cash, which we didn’t have yet. Had also had brought mozzie coils from home, thank goodness, are they were much needed.
The bedrooms were under whelming. Basically furnished with really uncomfortable lumpy pillows. The safes were a joke! Big antiques with doors that either didn’t open or didn’t close.
The 3 adults awoke the next morning when our air-cons all turned off. Breakfast was ready! After 3 days of the same thing happening we realised we were waking at a time to suit the maids, not us. After mutterings around the dining table, the air-con trick stopped though power outages still occurred.
We ordered lunch on Boxing Day from the in-house menu. Cost over $70, including 3 kids carbonara and 1 serve of rice. I didn’t like that our leftovers were served for breakfast the next day as nasi goreng. We ordered out after that as it was half the price and better food. We were also handed a receipt for ice that I had requested be there when we arrived. Shouldn’t that be supplied already?
We were starting to realise that we may be paying top price but it wasn’t buying us much.
-NO turn down service until I asked the manager, Wayan, saying at this price point we expect it. He was extremely arrogant, rude and loathe to do it saying we had only paid US$500 per night. He complained that I’d booked through Tripadvisor. The fact I had sent Alir a message in August asking if I could book direct, with no response, fell on deaf ears. He would not accept any complaint whatsoever, blaming us, the universe, Tripadvisor, anyone! I imagine that may be why there was only 1 review for the months up to our stay. A few more appeared a few days later along with a full calender of bookings, despite being quite empty that day when I checked.
He didn’t come back to the villa after his initial visit.
The next day I received a message saying yes, we could have turn down but one maid wouldn’t be there in the afternoon. We basically didn’t see the maids after 11am or so when they disappeared to the staff quarters, so that was fine. If we had lunch in house they would clean up after and disappear again until home time. Turn down started day 4.
-The soap appeared to be from a different property as the labels were torn off.
-Our water bottles were not replenished until I asked for some on day 7.
-The towels were grey, threadbare and even with holes! They were not changed our entire stay. If we left them on the floor as is hotel standard if we want them changed, they would just hang them up or even turn them over as was done with a filthy floor mat (which I’d used to kill a cockroach and wipe the floor with after).
-Toilet paper rationed, never left a spare roll.
The list goes on.
-TV room too hot to use, even with 2 air-cons and a floor fan going. The satellite channels were old movies and kids. No Discovery, StarAsia, or NatGeo. None of the dvd’s the kids tried worked.
-Located next to fields, one side had a peculiar man who would use a whip throughout the day and evening; to scare the birds away? Gave us all something to ponder and laugh about.
-Some of the things claimed to be at Alir but which we couldn’t find include; hot tub, spa, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, gym.
But the garden and pool are lovely!! Pool turned my brand new bathers green. Husband said he saw the gardener test the water at least twice a day but no one saw anyone chlorinate. Perhaps an osmosis pool?
I expect a nice sarcastic response to this review from the main manager, Wayan, as that was all he was capable off. I have a bizarre email which unfortunately I’m not allowed to post, from him, after a complaint from us regarding security and staff being absent.
There are so many lovely places in Bali, places in a better location, nicer furniture and with staff that actually work (excepting Nyoman maid and Wayan the gardener with bad teeth, who both tried their best) but when the management is broke it trickles down to the staff. The villa manager/maid joked on the first day how she is always late for work! Every place in Bali has a lovely garden and pool. DON’T STAY HERE!!!!!!!!!
perfect location, a sanctuary away from the busy streets or a 20 minute taxi ride into the action of Seminyak or wherever. The staff are lovely, the food cooked by the girls was delicious, you won't want to leave the pool much. Nothing is a bother to these beautiful people who are happy to help with whatever you may need. two couples with kids stayed in the main house and the other couples stayed in the other bungalows away from our noise! the grounds are immaculate and we were very very sad to leave. We will be back next year to do it all again!!! We had a driver with the villa who was terrific as well - MASSIVE THANKS TO VILLA ALIR
