Victoria Sapa Resort and Spa
Ranked #11 of 75 Hotels in Sapa
Reviewed 21 July 2011

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in April. While it was definitely not the best 4 star hotel we stayed in while in Vietnam it seems to be the best option in Sapa. However, very few rooms have a view of the countryside which is spectacular. Ours looked onto the garden which was pleasant. The room was nice but not fancy. The breakfast was good. We didn't eat dinner there, preferring to try restaurants in the town but it always seemed quiet. The staff were helpful. We booked one personalised half day tour through the hotel and our guide was excellent and took us to her own village Ta Phin which was fascinating. However, we booked another half day tour through the tourist office and found that a lot cheaper. The guide was excellent, an ex teacher who had taught in remote villages for a few years, but Ba Van village was much more touristy with lots of people passing through on day or overnight treks.

Our stay at this hotel was preplanned and arranged by VietnamTripadvisor tour company with whom we were travelling around Sapa. They had made the right choice for our two day stay. In fact they always made great choices in places of visit in Sapa, the drivers, guides, vehicles, etc. their services were great. Without them, our Sapa tours would not have been as enjoyable as it was.
Now coming back to the hotel, it is a great place to stay. The rooms were spacious and comfortable with necessary amenities. The services provided were excellent. The entire hotel was spotlessly clean. The staffs were quite helpful and attentive. The food served was excellent. I loved every bit of the delicious recipes served. I would love to stay here again.

We had heard we msut go to Sapa- particularly to get out of the big cities. And yes, it was small, pleasant and we climbed Ham Rong Mountain and it was beautiful and invigorating. Victoria Hotel is well located and very pretty. The setting is pleasant and it is above the town. What bothered us was that we had been booked on the King Express Overnight Train and that was gruelling. Apparently the Victoria Hotel has its own luxury train which makes the trip from Hanoi a very different experience. As well, the Black Hmong people lead a really poor life in Sapa, selling their embroidery on the streets and begging. Using ethnicity as tourism bugged us, especially as contrasted to the Black Hmong population that lives and thrives in Chiang Mai.

We booked this hotel and the rest of our Vietnam travel via a tour agent, so I don't know what the cost of the train and room actually were.

The train experience was very positive. Although we had a private guide, the Victoria porters handled our luggage from the train parking lots at both ends. Everyone was so professional and polite. We were greeted with with cool towels before embarking on the train. Our cabins were very nice, clean, contained some small amenities (toothbrushes, bottled water, ear plugs, slippers, etc.). There were security guards in the sleeping coach anytime I left my cabin. The dining car was very pleasant and they served snacks and drinks at night (meals too) and in the morning offered free coffee, tea and juice.

The hotel had a very warm atmosphere. During the day there was always a Hmong woman weaving scarves. The breakfast buffet was very nice with all sorts of meats, breads, fruit, cooked to order eggs and pho.

The rooms could use a little freshening up - but really were very very nice. They were decorated in the regional style. We had 2 rooms: a superior room on the second floor and a triple family studio room that was humongous. It had a queen bed and 3 single beds. Each room also had a balcony.

We were fortunate enough to use the spa. It is a short walk up the hill separate from the hotel. It really couldn't have been nicer. We didn't use the pool - but it was large and bright. When you arrive for your appointment, they greet you with some delicious hot tea. After your service, they serve you some sweet yoghurt and fruit....a really nice touch. I was the only one in the spa when I went for a hand and foot massage (which also included the scalp and neck and shoulders). The only thing some guests may not like is that many of the rooms have two treatment beds and there are only loose curtains between the treatment rooms and the hallway - not very private and could possibly be noisy.

We had a lovely 3 night stay plus 2 nights on their train. I wouldn't change a thing and would happily stay there again.

Dear NERoth,

thank you for your beautiful memory in Victoria Sapa.
June - September are the perfect months to visit Sapa. Clear weather and beautiful sky. Especiallyl if you walk down to valleys. People are starting to plant the rice field. Green carpet of newly planted rice fields are gorgeous.
Some rain perhaps, but still breezy and cool.

Looking forward welcoming you again in Sapa.

Kind regards,

Stayed at Victoria Sapa for 4 nights at the beginning of May 2011.

Our overall impression of this hotel is that it does not meet the 4* qualifications for many reasons. Regardless of this review, keep in mind this is the most luxurious hotel in Sapa and all other hotels offer lower standards of quality, however pricing is also much lower.

1) Rooms: they are pretty small and lack the finishing you would find in actual 4* hotels. They have not been renovated for many years and the conditions of the flooring is questionable. We called the maintenance people to actually hammer nails back into the floor as 3 were sticking out. With a 2 year old boy, this is not a good thing. Bathrooms are old style and small. View on the courtyard is very pleasant and is probably the best feature of this hotel.

2) Restaurant: not up to the standards of Victoria Hotels in Vietnam and Cambodia. Breakfast buffet is 20USD/person and offers absolutely nothing exceptional. Fresh juice is not included in the price neither is Cappuccino or any other real coffee made with a good machine. At this price point, I find this unacceptable. Service is MEDIOCRE, period. This is supposed to be a French inspired restaurant with high standards of service. Not the case. A few examples: a) Waitresses ask you to turn your cup over so they can serve coffee instead of doing it themselves. b) They will remove the plates as people finish instead of waiting for everyone to finish and do it all at once. Once they do un-garnish the table, they reach across the table to grab your plate. In hotels that are more "Vietnamese", I would expect this, but in a reference hotel like Victoria charging 170$US/night and restaurant prices of a Hong Kong hotel, this is purely unacceptable. This was not a one time thing, but a consistent and regular occurrence during our 4 nights. My message to the hotel management: TRAIN YOUR STAFF !

Location: The hotel is situated atop a hill that is accessible through stairs or by using the road up. The layout of the hotel is a bit strange as the main section is separated from the pool/tennis/spa area. To access this section, one must dress up, walk 100 meters up hill to arrive at a indoor pool facility that offers nothing special. On the way up, you can admire the extremely badly maintained tennis court, with the most worn out net I have seen in my life. For a 4 star hotel, this is again unacceptable. No one can play on this court nor on the volley ball court where goats have been positioned to replace a lawnmower. If you try to use this court, you will most likely step into goat excrements. So the hotel has sporting facilities but they are unusable (except for the pool). If you take out the sporting facilities, the hotel should drop down to 3*.

Other than the above, the rest is acceptable, but not at this pricing point. I have stayed at all the Victoria resorts across Vietnam and Cambodia and this is by far the worst I have seen in the lineup.

Having said this, the choice of hotels in Sapa is pretty large, but quality of infrastructure is below many other locations.
