“Beautiful old forest”

Breite Ancient Oak Tree Reserve
Reviewed 24 November 2012

If you like to hike, if you like the outdoors, go to Breite. No fee to get in and you can hike e entire reserve. Huge trees hundreds of years old. Oldest trees in Transylvania. I'm sure would be beautiful in spring or summer. I have only hiked it in fall.
You come up to a great view of Sighisoara toward the Orthodox Church.
You come out to the military cemetery near the Jewish cemetery and out in front of Hotel Transilvania.

Either you want to walk for 2-3 hours or to have a bike trip, this place worth a visit.
Quiet, green and wild.

We almost didn't try to visit the preserve because I'd read the review which described a steep hike to get there, and some of our group wasn't up to that.

However, it turns out there is a road that takes you 2 km from the highway directly into the preserve, so don't miss this even if you can't or don't have time to hike. There is plenty of opportunity to walk in the preserve itself.

The upkeep is rather forlorn, with signs (none in English) falling down and nothing but a vague map to suggest where the oldest tree might be, but this just adds to the aura of mystery and ageless quiet among these ancient giants. We guessed at the oldest, and left still not quite certain, which seemed right somehow. Only tiny scurrying humans would care about a few hundred years, more or less...

We really struggled to find this place. Make sure to go to the tourist information center (in Sighisoara) for directions before you start your hike.

Breite involves a rather steep climb up the hillside, but it's well worth the effort. Basically, you are going to walk to the outskirts of town, and then up through the wooded hillside (this is the strenuous part). At the top, you will walk a ways through the woods until you reach a large clearing. Beyond this is the oak tree reserve. You will be on relatively flat ground at this point so no more climbing is required. You can just relax and enjoy the scenery. The trek takes about 45-60 minutes total if starting out from Sighisoara's clock tower on foot.

It was deserted when we were there - except for the shepherds and their animals. We sat with the herding dogs, spent time with a friendly donkey, and walked (very slowly!) through a TON of sheep.

The oaks are enormous. They stand mostly in a solitary placement, so you can really study each one. They have different personalities as trees do. Some are gnarled and spooky. Others are picturesque - reminiscent of an antique oil painting.

This is a great place for nature photography, picnics, getting some exercise or (my personal favorite) daydreaming.

Apparently this place was going to be bulldozed to the ground and turned into a Dracula theme park. Thankfully, it was saved this terrible fate!
