“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2013

Back from this excellent hotel after staying for 2 weeks end of September. The staff are all friendly & can't do enough for you. From Mert the manager to Haydar at the bar & Thomas and all the waiting on staff. The size of the place has a just right feel & with plenty of returning guests, that can only speak for itself. The breakfast is adequate & you can always find something to start the day on. The day snack menu is good quality food & although we only had an evening meal once it was very good. Mert & Thomas organised a midnight BBQ trip on the lake on probably the best boat in Dalyan which was excellent. So, back from Dalyan & looking forward to returning here next year. Thanks for the chilled & laid back holiday.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near reception if little ones

Although we had a lovely holiday at the Calypso we were not totally overwhelmed by the experience. The pool was lovely, Hader at the bar was a great guy. Glad we weren't the only ones who found Miss (un)happy at reception. We didn't like the tab system and were overcharged on more than one occasion, think it's kind of understandable, how could Hader remember everyone's room no. We did question one of the charges for food which we didn't have and were grudgingly given our money back by Miss Happy. We haven't been to Turkey before and found the rooms a bit basic for our liking and poorly lit I am not sure if this is the norm. Couldn't sit for long on the balcony it was a bit small.
We were kindly given a late departure room which was a blessing, would have been a long day if we hadn't had the facility.
All in all only minor complaints which probably wouldn't deter us from going again now that we know what to expect.

Just returned on 27/09/13 from a week's holiday at Calypso Plus. What a lovely little hotel this is, I don't think I've ever felt more relaxed and chilled out on any other holiday I've been on, I have been on many package holidays over my 41 years and can honestly say this was the best.
Myself and my husband booked this holiday way back in January and had looked forward to it all year, we were not disappointed.
The Gardens and pool area are lovely, very well looked after and more than enough space and sun loungers for the 31 rooms.
The bedrooms are spotlessly clean, the bathrooms too, fitted out with contemporary decor and fixtures with a good powerful shower.
Breakfast is very good, always very fresh with more than enough choice for anyone, every day we ate ours on the jetty, a beautiful way to start the day watching the boats go past and trying to spot the goats on the other side of the river.
We had lunch most days at the hotel sitting by the river, everything we ate was very good, no complaints at all there, particularly liked the Turkish Pide, very nice, also the very large glasses of red wine went down a treat. Stayed for evening meal one night instead of going into town, again, no complaints there, nice fresh food and the best Turkish flat bread we had anywhere in Dalyan.
Would like to say a big thank you to all the staff especially Thomas and Haydar for looking after us so well, also to Mert and his family on the boat trip to the lake, what a great night that was, must have been good for me to get up and join in the dancing as I'm not the most outgoing type!
I've never really understood why people would go back to a hotel/resort again when there is a whole world of new places to visit but I can see why people return to Calypso Plus and Dalyan, you never know we may return one day.

Claire & Paul Dearden. Room 406.

We were looking for a different Hotel on our 2nd Trip to Dalyan, last time we stayed at the Tezcan on the river in town we preferred the Calypso.Turkish breakfast fine we did hear a few moan about the tea/coffee/cereals you name it, do some research on what a turkish breakfast consists of before you visit this country.
We had lunch 3/4 times it was ok we tended to find better quality and value for money down the road, and to be honest based on lunches we were not tempted to try the evening meal here,so it would be unfair to comment.
jo_ho made some valid points to be fair about this hotel,we were taken by surprise with the tab system again we paid every couple of days and found one of our payments not taken off but
Miss Happy on reception had put it the the diary on the desk suggest if you pay every couple of days you get them to sign your bill as paid because it does not zero it payments show as red on right of bill when payed,i have to add we never had any issues on the bill.
Rooms fine plenty of hangars good shower size fine and kept clean with changes of towels etc often,we found the bathroom a bit whiffy a couple of times but we actually had this in while eating out in town so we tend to think this is a local problem rather than the calypso.
We also found some of the staff a bit sour in attitude it could be that it is coming towards the end of the season or changes are afoot next season.
Our room was on the upper floor garden facing a word of warning to those who are not fleet of foot some of the steps are quite sharp and difficut to go up.
Plenty of sunbeds always seemed to be beds available even when it was full pool fine met our needs then again we are not Olympic Swimmers.
Dogs can be a bit of a problem couple of nasty little ones about one nice dog seemed to be called scruffy lovely nature bit flea bitten i also noticed a dog fowl twice on the grass i also showed it to one of the staff he just looked at it shrugged his shoulder and walked off and the offendng pile sat there for the rest of the holiday baking in the sun (dissapointing).
sometimes it just felt things are starting to slip rubbish left in the garden grass long finally cut a couple of days before we left, just get that end of season feeling to it all.
Saying that we would stay here again if you want a nice quite hotel good pool plenty of sunbeds and left alone a short walk from town you cant go wrong people it is a very good 3 star hotel yes it has some very small issues not as faultless as some would have you believe on some of the reviews as i said we prefer it to the Tezcan any day.

Hi
Thanks for your review, you can be sure that we will improve ourselves about those issues.
Dalyan has a lot of street dogs, thats we and some of other hotels helps with donations to the dog pounds. Our hotel has quite big open garden and some times Its hard keep dogs away. But we will take care with this situation as soon as possible.
We hope to see you in our hotel again.

I was a bit disappointed with this place after all the wonderful reviews. If there was a rating between average and very good, I would give it. I'll try to give a balanced explanation.

We arrived very early in the morning and were met by Mert who was friendly and helpful. He showed us all to our rooms and opened the bar so we could have a refreshing drink. Here we came across our first surprise - they don't take any cash over the bar for food or drink; you add everything to a tab for your room and can pay it off as and when you want.

The hotel was nice because it is only 4 years old, so still fairly fresh and unworn. It's only 31 rooms in 6 blocks so no great hordes of people. Garden and landscaping nice. The pool was nice, but not very big. There are a few sunbeds around the pool and some more with parasols on a grass area behind the bar. We could always find a bed somewhere - even when everyone was up at 8AM to reserve their beds and then go off to town for the market!

The bar was nice and well stocked and quite well priced. They don't serve Efes which was disappointing, but the Tuborg was good and the white wine was very drinkable! Haydar was good fun and always up for a chat.

Our room was nice and was a good size for 2 people with bedroom, shower room, seperate room with a bed settee, wardrobe and dressing table, and a terrace. Our shower had a full height window open to the side of the bed - different! Air con is included, which is great, but the safe isn't, which we weren't told but wasn't expensive. The shower was good and strong, though there was no hot water a couple of times. Our room overlooked the pool and was quite close to the bar, but we were never bothered by noise.

The rooms were cleaned regularly and sheets and towels changed regularly. Toilet rolls were topped up regularly - little things eh?! The cleaners decorated our bed 3 times while we were there. They were great -very hardworking and friendly and smiley.

We were on a B&B package and we were more than satisfied with the breakfast. There are cold meats, cheeses, cereal, fruit, yoghurt, fruit compote, honey, olives, bread, brioche, boiled eggs, juice, tea, coffees and usually a hot plate with omelette style thingy and maybe cheese rolls. I was quite happy with a small bowl of fruit and fibre cereal and yoghurt with fruit compote. The only day I had a boiled egg I was poorly BUT I don't think it was the egg! Sheer coincidence! If you want a full english you can order one extra - but you will get a better one in town - e.g. Patio restaurant.

The location of the hotel was nice - right on the river and only a few minutes walk to town. It was quiet, most of the time, apart from the binmen and the barking dogs and the cockerels! But after 2 nights we got used to them and didn't hear them at all!

The staff were friendly, polite and efficient apart from one or two who were sullen, unhelpful and unfriendly but shall remain nameless.

So what was wrong with it?

Well we didn't like the tab system and are pretty sure we were charged for a few more drinks than we actually had. I am not saying there was any deliberate fiddling going on, just the occasional mix up. But with no way to prove it, you can't do anything.

We paid our tab off every couple of days and a payment was missed off one time. There was no quibble when we pointed it out, but had I not spotted it I wonder what would have happened?! Our friends were charged twice for the safe. Again, no quibble when it was pointed out to them, but, had it not been spotted......

The room
- I would hate to be 3 people in there. The terrace is tiny with only 2 chairs, a little table and the air con unit taking up loads of room!
- The furniture in the room consisted of nice wooden bed (double), wardrobe, bedside tables and a dresser and then one rubbish plastic chair in the bedroom and a naff plastic stool under the dresser.
- The light in the dressing/bed settee area was rubbish - far too dim - and there was no light near or over the dressing table.
- A little fridge would be really useful for keeping water cool at the very least!!
- Instead of a top sheet you are given a waffle cotton blanket which isn't actually big enough for two people! A cotton sheet would have been better, but somehow we ended up with 2 blankets so we were both ok in the end.
- there aren't enough hooks/rails for hanging towels or just for stuff - especially in the bathroom. We had to hang towels on the wardrobe door and the mirror to dry.

Bathroom - occasionally there was a very strange and quite sickening smell which we couldn't describe or locate - it wasn't from us, if you see what I mean!

Food - we didn't eat any dinners there, only lunch or snacks. Some of the food was average, some was dire! I was poorly one day and stayed in bed. Husband ordered me a chicken club sandwich - which was 2 pieces of leathery, overcooked chicken in toast and nothing else - not my definition of a club sandwich! I had a chicken ceasar salad and there was no evidence of it being ceasar at all - no dressing, no croutons, just chicken with mixed salad. Another time I had a cheese toastie and it was the meanest portion of cheese between 4 slices of bread that had been waved in the direction of the toaster. Some days they couldn't even cook chips correctly. Husband had a pide and said it was sloppy and horrible. We really only ate there for convenience and never had the same thing twice. The pizzas were okay.

Dogs - we like dogs and didn't have any problem with the strays. The regular hotel strays were friendly and if you shooed them away they went away. They were never a problem. But, access to the hotel grounds is quite open so there was often a visiting dog passing through. The main problem was that the strays and the dogs belonging to the staff would wee and poop in any grass area they fancied - so stick to the paths rather than trying to take short cuts around the pool and the rooms! There were hardly any cats - though there was one lovely tabby one that seemed to enjoy teasing the hotel dogs!

Late check-out - asked Mert and the miserable girl that works there (Merts sister maybe?) and were told our rooms were booked and we couldn't keep them for late check out. We weren't being picked up until 11PM and had to be out at 12.30PM. We hung around, like you do on check out day, and no-one checked into our room before we left. Haydar, the barman, told us there was a room below the reception that we could use for a shower. Mert and the miserable girl flat out disagreed and refused to let anyone use the WCs that were down there.

Moonlight cruise - we chatted to Haydar and told him what we might like to do in terms of trips and cruises while in Dalyan. Somehow this got translated into us booking places on the hotels own moonlight cruise. We got back from the beach late, sandy, unwashed, hungry and thirsty to find Thomas in a state of frenzy because the cruise boat and everyone else was waiting for us. He wouldn't accept that we had never booked it. He admitted Haydar had told him we were going on it, but he hadn't bothered checking with us at any point. Quite awkward and embarrassing.

I hope that covers it.

Hi
Thanks for your review and I guess I will make better to explain couple of things.
Our bill system ; we dont take any cash at the bar and the restaurant, but you can pay your bill at reception whenever you like. When some items wrong in a bill we take it off without asking any proof, so I dont see this comment is very fair.
Late Check-out; we are always trying our guests to stay in the room longer when we have available room. But when its fully booked, unfortunatly I cant help it. The wc and shower at downstairs is for staff! Thats why lady in the reception (not my sister or relative) told you thats out of use for the guests.
Anyway thanks for your opinions we are always trying to improve ourselves. We like to see you in our hotel again, who knows maybe with more stars.

Kind Regards
Mert Mete

Just returned from this amazing hotel, (and booked again for next year) thank you to Mert and family for making it such a great holiday, and Haydar the bar manager, and Thomas and Eddie at the restaurant who were all fantastic, as were all the staff at the hotel, and the cleaners who did the best job. Met some lovely people, both British and Dutch.

Just returned from this stunning resort! Wow! Dalyan! A beautiful place which has so much to offer! Arrived in late hours of the morning with our rooms ready and lit up waiting for us. . . Slept briefly but only because I was too keen to see what this place had to offer!
Fabulous people who work here! Haydar (barman), Thomas, eddy, ali, . . . All great people.
The cleaners - brilliant. Work so hard and probably the best I have seen in all my years of travelling to turkey.
The pool - marvelous! Always quiet, always loungers available, pool very, very clean. . . Can even swim in moonlight!
Atmosphere - very, very relaxed. . . Its not for your 'rowdy' brits - but that's what I like- even at 29 years old, its peaceful and tranquil. . . No loud music.
Food - well, depends on what you want. Its a bed and breakfast basis, very much Turkish breakfasts but still lovely, staff are always on hand to make sure everything is fresh.
Drinks/prices - they only sell Tuborg lager, which, was my only downside as I like Efes, but hey, I won't complain! A large beer is 7 lira, which compared to a lot of restaurants, Is a very reasonable price in this current climate.
People - fabulous! I have met some brilliant people! Graham and Steve (if you read this, please get in touch! We forgot to exchange emails!), jacqui, Dave and family, cherry and Simon - lovely! Made a fantastic holiday and really good, genuinely nice people.

Overall, I have never had such a wow factor of a holiday! I intend on returning next year!

Thanks to Mert and his family for a brilliant holiday!

Biggest only problem, mosquitos! I was bitten over 100 times, but to be expected when you are right adjacent to a river! But plenty of repellent and antiseptic cream works wonders - this certainly, won't put me off returning!
