We ended our two week holiday in Turkey in June by staying at the Yunus Hotel in Dalyan which we had booked via Travel Republic. The price we paid was so low we wondered what we were letting ourselves in for.
From out arrival we were looked after royally. The hotel is in a lovely location situated on the river bank and far enough out of town to be quiet and peaceful. Having said that it is only a fifteen minute or so stroll along the riverside walk to the town centre. The hotel gardens are very pleasant and well maintained. There is a beautiful pool area with ample sun loungers and retractable awnings which you can use to shelter from the sun.
The hotel owner Kamerun and his wife Hulia, plus the general factotum Fatih, are splendid hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. Where else but Turkey could a guest think out loud to herself that she would like some chocolate cake only for Hulia to dash into her kitchen and 40 minutes later produce one fresh from the oven?
The food at the Yunus is very good although the menu is small and not very adventurous – not a bad thing in many cases. We had lunch there and on the night we left we had dinner. Hulia’s sautéed liver and onions was to die for. Hulia even prepared sandwiches free of charge so we could avoid the horrendous rip off prices at Dalaman airport. As an aside to this review, surely the authorities there should be locked up for grand larceny – they were charging £13 for a packet of Walkers crisps and two colas. The numbers of families eating at Burger King was amazing. They must have arranged a bank loan. Still if some people are daft enough to pay those prices then they’ll keep on charging them.
At the Yunus typical Turkish breakfasts are served buffet style and can be taken on the jetty down by the river. There was always lovely fresh bread accompanied by eggs, cheese, fruit plus a variety of cereals.
The rooms although not huge are quite adequate and kept beautifully clean. The a/c worked fine and there was no extra charge. The bathrooms are large and nicely tiled and decorated. Our only niggle was that that in ours the shower control was a bit dodgy so it took a bit of fiddling around with the control thumb piece to get the shower running. Oh yes, one other small issue, namely the erratic hot water supply. Had to get in early to guarantee a hot shower. Fatih said it was because they kept forgetting to switch on the heater. We think that maybe the tank isn’t adequately sized for the number of rooms it serves.
Kamerun organises boat trips from Gocek which, although we didn’t go on one due to the short duration of our stay, fellow guests told us they were great fun and very good value.
The Yunus is very popular with a bunch of Brits who colonise the place two or three times a year. Some have been holidaying with Kamerun and Hulia for years from when they owned the Mehtap Hotel and one has to say that the stories from yesteryear became it a bit boring after a while. One fellow guest suggested they treated their rooms like time shares to the extent they insist on the same room each year and leave their holiday clothes behind in the store room and travel with just hand baggage. Must say it makes for a quick getaway on arrival at Dalaman.
We wouldn’t choose to stay at the Yunus year in, year out as some obviously do but we’ll definitely consider it for a week’s break next year particularly as it is only a half hour drive from Dalaman airport.
In summary the Yunus is an extremely well run and friendly hotel which we can thoroughly recommend it.
