“Very Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

This really is a very pleasant hotel; stylish and beautifully decorated. It has plenty of history, style and character with the most stunning gardens. Also the pool area is beautiful and very well kept.

We travelled independently and used this hotel as a base to explore the peninsula. It is very out of the way so a car is pretty much essential. It is also quite difficult to find and, because of a delay at the airport, we arrived at midnight and there were no staff around to check us in, although we were expected. After much searching we were eventually able to get the attention of two members of live-in staff who saved the day - or night in this case. We seriously thought we might have to sleep in the car, so always ring ahead if you're going to be late arriving.

We stayed the first two weeks of September when there were fewer guests around so perfect if you enjoy solitude and peace, but not good if you're looking for an active nightlife. The staff were an absolute delight - charming, helpful and friendly at all times.

The steps to the swimming pool would be difficult for anyone with mobility problems, although there is an easier climb around the back of the hotel, past the staff accommodation block. Overall the grounds would not be easy for anyone with mobility problems.

This hotel lived up to our expectations as a tasteful, stylish and relaxing retreat for our first stay in Turkey.

Spent two nights at this hotel in July 2013. Just wanted to explore the Datca peninsula. This is a good base to do that from.
Positives: very large garden - peaceful and spacious and full of flora. Has a number of places where you could just sit and relax and listen to the garden sounds. Staff will bring you drinks and refreshments whenever you desire.
Nice spacious rooms with airconditioning in the "stone house" which is a short walk from mansion itself.
Staff very helpful. In particular: Zeynep!
Restaurant food was good although see comment below.
Small negatives:
You need to ask for bottled water for your room.
Main bedrooms in mansion have no air-conditioning. These are very nice rooms though.
During our stay the restaurant could not provide the only beef selection on the menu. Reason given seemed a little odd. No beef available in Datca???
Drinks in particular imported sprits and wine are very expensive.
Hotel is not in downtown Datca. Is in fact in an older part of town in a village called Resadiye. So if you do not have a car you may find this difficult to get to. But the old village is nice to see.
In summary: worth a stay if you are looking for peace and quiet on a tour of the Datca peninsula. Datca itself is a pleasant town without the bustle of Bodrum and without the tourists of Marmaris.
Worth a visit to see a quieter side of Turkey's tourism scene.

The Mehmet Ali Aga Mansion was highly touted by friends of friends, so our expectations were quite high, and the hotel did not live up to those raised expectations. The mansion and the rooms are lovely -- one of nicest rooms we stayed in in Turkey, but the entire premises we felt were neglected -- it felt like careless management. There was no one in the office when we arrived, so we had to hunt for someone. The pool area was nice, but the pool was very small. The food was below average and young servers were friendly but were not in uniforms and in shorts and dirty sneakers. It clearly did not belong to hotels in the Relaix et Chateau book, which it made in 2010, but was probably dropped for good reason. And it was not near the beach or the town of Datca. We had to take a dolmus (small bus) into town, where we signed up for a day-long boat trip (boat capacity about 60 people), The boat trip was wonderful - 30TL each for a full day (10:30-6:00 PM) down the Mediterranean coast with five stops in beautiful coves for swimming. We were the only non-Turkish people aboard. Lunch was included -- great sea bass. By the way, the hotel manager (front office manager) offered to book a private boat for us -- 500 TL -- or a group trip for 36TL. We found a private boat trip for 300 TL, so he was adding 20% or more for himself.

We stayed for 4 nights at the Mansion as part of a split centre week with Exclusive Escapes. We are always confident that we will enjoy staying at Exclusive Escapes' properties and this one did not disappoint.
Our room was not in the main house, but was one of the "stone rooms" which looked out onto the beautiful gardens. The room was comfortable, cool and cosy, if a bit dark. It would have been nice to have had tea and coffee making facilities in the room, but otherwise it was well equipped. We requested additional pillows and an extra top sheet, as the one provided was not really big enough for the bed and we spent our first night fighting over it!! These were supplied immediately.
There were only 3 or 4 other couples in residence for most of our stay. This was great during the day as it meant that the pool area was very quiet. Indeed, we had it all to ourselves on occasion.
However, it didn't make for much atmosphere at dinner, so we went into town on all but the first night. The hotel will take you into town whenever you want and it is easy to get a taxi home at the end of the evening. Breakfast, our first night's dinner at the hotel and lunches were all very good. The restaurant setting is lovely, although it can get a bit breezy at times.
This is a really attractive building, set in lovingly maintained gardens with a very nice pool area. Some of the outdoor soft furnishings are starting to show their age, but otherwise very nice. The pool is in an elevated area which could be quite difficult to access for anyone with mobility issues.
The Manager, Murat, is really the only one of the team who speaks fluent English. When he is not around miming will usually produce the required outcome, with much amusement on both sides!
There is a small hamam, but we did not use it. The team will be happy to show you around the mansion, even if you are not staying in it. The rooms are quite special, although you will have to rely on night breezes to keep cool as there is no air conditioning.
We were pleasantly surprised by Datca, which has two harbour areas and a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. It feels like a town where people live all year around, not just one which survives on tourism alone. There are plenty of options to take a boat trip if you wish to do so.
The hotel has an arrangement with a local beach club. The beach itself is nothing special, but the club is very nice. In addition to sunbeds on the beach there are a number of cabanas with tables comfy seats and hammocks arranged around the bar area. Service is excellent and there is a varied menu. Food was tasty, well presented and very reasonable. The hotel will run you down to the beach club and pick you up again when you are ready to return.
Datca is a popular resort with Turkish families. It was nice to be in the minority!

We booked this hotel because the map on Expedia, and Google Maps, said it was in downtown Datca. The description says it's close to the beach. Booking.com has the correct location, which is miles from the beach and downtown Datca. It is a lovely hotel, which we toured, but didn't stay because of the location. Also, we didn't find any staff around, other than a few gardeners who were very welcoming, but spoke no English. I would stay at this hotel if I had a car or bike to ride to the beach and the town.

Note that the TripAdvisor map is closer, but is still not correct.

There are many hotels in Turkey which claim to be boutique or luxury. Unfortunately, many do not live up to this accolade - the Mehmet Ali on the other hand does. The 200 year old mansion is set 3-4km out of the main town in the hills amongst some beautiful gardens. I had the pleasure of spending 2 nights there after a long journey (by bus!) from Gocek in the south. On arrival we received some complimentary drinks and were taken to our room on the ground floor, which was nicely furnished, comfortable and most importantly, cool. The only quibble would be that the mini bars are not stocked unless requested and don't tend to be turned on - not a huge issue, but one I am seeing more and more often.

We used the dining facilities for lunch, dinner and breakfast and can highly recommend the mezze dishes - in my opinion they were comfortably the best I had during three weeks in Turkey and I could have based my entire dinner around these. Breakfast was also very good and the services is exceptionally friendly. I would note that the wine is expensive but it tends to be in most Turkish restaurants.

The hotel has a delightful swimming pool, which isn't massive but has a good array of places to lie and relax. If you are tired of the beach experience it certainly is a beautiful place to sit and relax and get a drink brought up from the restaurant. There is also a hamam although I did not get the chance to use it.

I think most people have commented on it but the thing that makes the hotel special are the hotel staff, who are extremely helpful and friendly. They helped us on numerous occasions giving us lifts into the town, to their private beach and to the ferry to Bodrum. It is probably better to rent a car to give you freedom to explore but we felt this wasn't a huge constraint in Datça. Ultimately, the quality of service and going the extra mile for a customer are the things that count and when it is topped off with beautiful surroundings it makes it extra special. I will certainly be going back.

Room Tip: Main mansion is the best place to be, although all rooms are excellent.
