“Excellent stay”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

Gayle is the most welcoming and gracious host and I would definitely recommend River Lodge.

We stayed for two nights in April, the room was superb. Giant comfy bed, sofa, fridge and a shared balcony with seating. The shared lounge area's are huge, plenty of space and Denton even lit the fire early especially for us as we came back soaking wet for one of the many great walks Gayle recommended.

Breakfast was delicious - cereals, bread, toast, cheese, ham, jams, eggs, hot breakfast. You name it Gayle offered it! We also had a lovey dinner that Gayle prepared with fresh lamb and vegetables.

Lovely place to stay to explore the area.

Thank you so much for your review. We really do believe that "the little things do matter" as our website promotes. That little bit extra costs very little other than time and we enjoy it so there is absolutely no effort at all. When we first started here one of the other lodges said to us "if you can't enjoy it don't do it or it will show" Fortunately we did do it, and do like (love) it and have made a bucket load of friends along the way while doing it! Again thank you so much for your kind words, a happy guest is a happy host! If you have any suggestions at all please contact us by pm as we have done quite a few things as a result of guests just mentioning " you know, it would be great if......" Look forward to seeing you again some day!

It’s been said before about the River Lodge and it rings so true, home comforts, peace & quiet, unassuming luxuries, loads of privacy should you wish or convivial chat with your hosts and other guests. Paul Carberry of New Zealand in Depth suggested the River House, Ohakune as an ideal base to visit the sights of Waitomo and surrounding areas and a chance to rest as well, a spot beautifully chosen Paul, Gayle & Denton have created what they look for on holiday, Gayle will produce a superb evening meal (with a few hours’ notice) or you have the facilities in your lodge to prepare the backup dishes to accompany the BBQ they have the facilities available for your use, the optional dip in the hot tub surveying the views first of course. Restaurants available in the township are also recommended by your hosts and of course Afternoon Tea at Chateau Tongariro is a must for all self-respecting Brits who might just be missing home a little! And those non Brits “who remember things the way they used to be”(see separate tripadvisor report) Well worth looking up (book early they are very much in demand and try for the chalets they are worth the extra.
So the chalet/lodges are spot on to cater for your needs and just relax, wholeheartedly recommended.

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, I've finally worked out how to respond! Thank you for wonderful feedback and we're thrilled that you enjoyed you stay here and the activities our fabulous region has to offer. ALL Feedback is positive to us and very important as it allows us to keep on doing what we do well and improve on what we could do better. The old saying of you can work with what you know and not with what you don't is very true. If our guests leave happy then we are even happier! On to your next adventure and we will remember you both with great fondness. Take care and kindest regards, Gayle and Denton

We stayed at River Lodge for 3 nights, the accommodation was lovely and clean. Gail and Denton were very good hosts, very attentive but not intrusive. Gail's cooking was very good and we would not hesitate to recommend this delightful B&B.

Staying at this place is very nice experience. Outside of Ohakune, in the country side, along the banks of a small river. Providing an excellent breakfast and diner. Also very much appreciated is the use of the bath tube in the garden, really very much relaxing!

Room Tip: Looking for a very nice and quit place near Ohakune, this is the place to be.

We spent 2 nights at The River Lodge, in the countryside outside Ohakune. We stayed in a spacious upstairs room in the lodge with a shared porch overlooking fields with snow-covered Mount Ruapehu in the background. The location was great for visiting Tongariro National Park. Two spacious, inviting and homey lounges provide a place to relax or chat with other visitors. The cold breakfast, served at one giant table, allows guests to meet and is a satisfactory start to the day. Gayle also prepared a delicious and filling dinner for us one night. Our stay would have been even better if one of the chalets had been available but we had no complaints. Gayle and Denton were great hosts.

Room Tip: Try for a chalet.

We had an amazing time at The River Lodge, it was also were we got engaged!! After spending a few days relaxing at the chalet looking out to Mt Ruapehu, fly-fishing the excellent trout river running through the lodge, mountain bike trekking the old coach railway and strolling through the beautiful town of Ohakune. on our last morning, much to my surprise my now fiancée had arranged a helicopter to land at the lodge!! much planning was involved which Gayle and Denton were more than happy to help and nothing was ever too much to ask.
You really will not find nicer hosts, beautiful accommodation and excellent breakfast.
Memories that will last a life time!!

I've decided to follow up now that I've worked out how to respond to feedback, therefore our sincere apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Your stay was such a memorable event given the wonderful "surprise" proposal by helicopter over the top of Mt Ruapehu. Our other guests were so thrilled so you have not only given yourselves a memory of a lifetime but contributed to our other guests memories of a lifetime! We are so privileged to have been part of it. Next time you are in the area please stop in and have a coffee with us. Best wishes Gayle and Denton

Highly recommend staying at 'The River Lodge' in Ohakune, the chalet has magnificent views of Mt Ruapehu, and after a hard days skiing, sitting in front of the fire place will recharge your batteries for the next day. You will also not find better hosts than Gayle and Denton, they make you feel like part of the family, and the kids will absolutely love it, make sure they bring a carrot or two for Rosie the carrot loving sheep. :)
We will definitely be going back to the River Lodge next time we visit Mt Ruapehu region. Great value for money, and staying there makes you feel like you are at a home away from home...and a wonderfully warm home at that....
