“Good place to stay in interesting area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2014

Apologies for the lateness of this review of our stay in October 2013. It's taken me six months to get through the reviews I want to write, although reminding myself of our great trip is an ongoing pleasure!

We fetched up in Ohakune during wild spring weather (with which we are sadly quite familiar!) and while there, experienced some of the heaviest rain I've ever been in. When you're not at home that's kind of exciting though. Fascinated, we watched water rise around our motel room; a burn across the road burst its banks and took a short cut to the massively oversubscribed local river which was raging along filled with sediment and bits of tree. Sorry to say, some people in the village were evacuated, although I understand the emergency was short-lived.

A little later on in the same day we were walking through a beautiful forest round a lake in dappled sunshine – though the higher walk we wanted to take was impossible because of snow and we’d chosen a forest route that avoided crossing burns.

The owner/manager is welcoming and the information on offer is well chosen; we enjoyed our stay. The accommodation was all we needed, clean and comfortable and there was a chance to get some laundry done too.

This motel is a very good example of what an operator can achieve with a relatively. Basic set of units. Although old, the units have been refurbished. They are well equipped (we had a studio with small kitchen and a mountain view). Our room was spotlessly clean. The operator was friendly and helpful. We didn't use the spa, which I later regretted. When the weather co-operates, the mountain view is spectacular. Ohakune is a great town to stay in over night when travelling between, say, Auckland and Wellington. It is, of course, expensive in the ski season, but relatively reasonable at other times. A good base for Tongariro Crossing and Whanganui river trip (use Canoe Safaris, great operator). There are some nice places to eat in town and a handy little supermarket for the self caterers. Also visit Raetihi (great little cafe there and iconic Ratana church).

Room Tip: Select a mountain view room and one with a kitchen

We had a room on the ground floor, on arrival the owner suggested we swapped for a room on the first floor as it was newer (10$ surcharge). We kept ours because of our heavy luggage.
The room was ok, nothing fancy but functional.
The bed spread didn't look freshly washed by any stretch of imagination, but the bed linen we're clean.
Wifi - some provided. Absolutely adequate for the 90$ we paid.

Stayed here with my parents for one night just passing through from Hamilton to Wellington. We had a really nice 2-bedroomed unit. Clearly newly decorated, it was sparkling clean. The kitchen was well supplied and their information pack really helpful. The owners gave some great information on local walks and the WiFi was free. And we could see the mountains from our unit. What more could anyone ask for? We would happily stay there again.

Ohakune is a perfect place to break the journey between Auckland and Wellington and this motel is in a quiet location with a superb view of Mount Ruapehu. Spotless room, comfortable bed, proper reading lamps, free WiFi, TV that worked perfectly, plenty of pillows and towels. Kitchen area was equipped with everything we needed for a short stay and real coffee and fresh milk was a bonus.
The owner was very friendly and helpful with suggestions for walks as well as our route to Auckland. We hope to stay here again but will spend longer next time.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have superb mountain views.

The motel is very well situated to explore the area but the décor is a little tired. The room was clean; the two girls who met us at reception were not very communicative. The kitchen area was adequate.

My wife and I stayed at this motel for two nights. We had a really good welcome from the owner and some good advice as to local walks. The room was a reasonable size with a well equipped kitchen area. The room was clean with spotless linen on a comfortable bed. The views of Mount Ruapehu were magnificent. WiFi was free with good reception. I would certainly stay here gain if in the area.

Room Tip: Try to get an upstairs room with a mountain view.
