“wonderful ski resort”
Reviewed 1 September 2014

Beautifully furnished with wooden beams and roaring fireplace in the restaurant, this was a very comfortable and cosy ski resort. Food was great, and beds were super comfortable. Only one glitch was with the wifi - I bought a wifi password, but still couldn't receive the wifi in my room or in the lobby area. Of course, you have Mt Doom and Mordor just nearby as wonderful middle earth locations to ski at!

Myself and a group of 5 other friends stayed 2 nights 29/30 August. Ashley and the crew were fantastic, nothing was too Difficult. the staff went out of their way to accomadate us with the best customer service we have had in a long time. We will definitely be back again. keep up the great work. Awesome venue and the closest accomodation to the Turoa side of the mountain.

I stayed in the apartment with my family, and celebrated my 40th with friends in the Matterhorn. I can't speak highly enough of our experience.

The apartment is spacious and beautifully appointed and gives you the choice of cooking or eating in the restaurant. Everything is at your fingertips with the bar, restaurant, pool, snow centre... So apart from heading up to the snow we never left! Which makes life so easy in winter time with little ones.

The big surprise for us was the standard of the food at the restaurant, rivalled any city food anywhere, hearty and delicious with good healthy and gluten free options. We had platters up at the Matterhorn with out birthday drinks and they were really delicious and the service was lovely.

Thank you guys for a special time, looking forward to our next stay already.

We have been coming to the Powderhorn for some years now and without fail I LOVE this place. If you are yearning for an actual alpine experience in the Mt Ruapehu ski district this is the place to come to. The lushious wooden log cabin construction, the leather seats, the attention to detail , always a gorgeous central fire in the dining/bar areas, breakfast through to closing. I love that once you're back from the mountain, or have arrived in town everything you need is right there, two choices of dining, a wonderful huge hot pool, everything you could need for the mountain to buy or hire (The super helpful Snowcentre adjacent in the carpark and with a 20% discount) including your lift ticket so that in the morning you can go straight onto the chairlift without queueing at the top. Gorgeous rooms, I could go on. We have tried every type of accomodation in Ohakune, from motels to backpackers and nowadays will always pay a bit extra to stay here, as I figure it , the extra price is more than repaid in the extra amount of holiday I get, with no dishes, no cleaning, no cooking, a beautiful bathroom, sky movies, and the free and unlimited pool use ( 9am-9pm). If your aim is to have a total holiday and not a working holiday come here, it is especially child friendly as well (and mum's this way you don't have to cook )

This hotel was what you pay for. The room was clean and bathroom was stocked with supplies. Staff were super helpful and nice. The powderhorn bar was average, very cramped in there and you don't get much rye fillet fir the price, you get an overload of mash potato instead. Deserts were nice though.
There's a swimming pool which us open 9am-9pm but we did not use this.
Walls are not super thin which is what other people have said. I barely heard our neighbours. Comforter on bed is super warm and comfy.
The only couple of downs and they were minimal was, the lighting in the room is super dim, even with all the wall lights on. The second was the shower is not designed get well was the water comes out from under the glass. Not biggies but it pays not to put the bath mat down until after you have finished your shower.
All in all I would stay here again but would prob eat try the bar that was upstairs, which you have to make a reservation for.

Stayed here for three nights after getting off the Northern Explorer from Wellington (the station being only about 100 metres away - an excellent and romantic way to travel to this hotel by the way).

We had an excellent stay. Despite warnings about the possibility of noise issues because of the wooden construction, we really had no issues, despite the ski season carousing ramping up in nearby establishments and the close proximity of the train line. The rooms are incredibly spacious (with vast cupboard areas for clothing, luggage and ski equipment) and as we had the kids, the booking of two interconnecting rooms gave us a real feeling of luxury.

The connected restaurant/bar, the Powderkeg, served excellent food for breakfast and dinner, and the in door heated swimming pool was lovely after a day of blizzard like conditions at Ruapehu.

Highly recommended.

We stayed for three nights at the beautiful Powderhorn Chateau in Ohakune. The building is amazing to look at, with rich wood everywhere.

Reception was very friendly and efficient. We didn't even need to say who we were when we arrived (I suspect we were the only guests to book in on the Wednesday before a long weekend).

Service throughout our stay was good - also in the restaurant (about which I'll write a separate review).

So why in two minds, then?

Well, we didn't sleep well.

On our first night there we woke up at 1:15am due to what sounded like someone fumbling to get a key into our door lock. I got up to check it out ... but there was nobody at the door. Then I heard it again while standing by the door. It was coming from the wall! I put my ear against the wall, and could clearly hear the sound coming from inside the wall (that wall was the outside wall of the building, so there was nothing on the other side). I then hit the wall and the noise stopped (for about 30 minutes). This kept on throughout the night, so we had very little sleep.

The next day we asked to be moved to another room, which was granted without hesitation.

But in our second room the bed was not of a good enough quality, so we had two more nights of sub-standard sleep.

On top of this, the hotel doesn't even offer free Wi-Fi to their customers. In spite of their relatively high prices, you have to purchase internet access, so we opted to use my Windows phone's internet sharing ability to access the internet.

In summary, we will most definitely go back to Ohakune ... but we'll find other accommodation next time.

Room Tip: Rooms with smaller numbers (like 201 / 301) are closer to the railway line, so try to get a bigger-n...

Thank you for your review of our hotel. We are delighted to hear that you were pleased with the service of our staff both in the hotel and the restaurant. We pride ourselves on excellent customer relations and quality of service.

As you are aware we are located in a beautiful area surrounded by Tongariro National Park and other native forestry. Because of our close proximity to all this native bush it is not uncommon for some of the wildlife who reside within to venture out at night in search of food. In this instance we are certain that it was an opossum on the balcony that caused such disturbances in the night. Because we cannot control occurrences such as these we happily moved you into a room where this wouldn't be an issue.

We sincerely apologize for the discrepancies you had during your stay, and hope that you will not let it keep you from visiting again in the future.
