“Great land-based location for Truk wrecks”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

I stayed with my family of 5 (2 adults, 3 young children) at the Blue Lagoon Resort over Xmas 2011. Although the rooms are a bit dated, they were functional (with aircon, a small fridge and a TV for connecting to DVD machines - there is no local TV channels - and we also asked for and got a kettle for our room for making tea etc) and all have large balcony areas for enjoying some outside breeze. We were in a double room with two queen sized beds and it was large enough for us all to sleep comfortably. The food in the restaurant was extremely good although the availability of reef fish seems to be dependent on the ability of the local fishermen, but service was good and the food tasted great. There is enough variety on the menu to stop it from being boring and I can certainly recommend the local dishes as worth exploring. All staff at the resort (including the diveshop and dive guides) were all very friendly and helpful and despite not being much of a beach my kids loved playing on the sand there was and snorkeling in the area around the resort.
There is a supermarket next to the dive shop which sells various grocery items and also drinks slightly cheaper than in the resort shop. Wifi was available from the lobby and restaurant but was not that fast and slowed down terribly when everybody logged on during lunch/dinner etc. Wifiu not available in rooms (weak signal as the routers are all attached the the main lobby area).
I did several days diving as well and covered a different wreck on each dive - the guides are very flexible about where you want to go so it is worth drawing up a wish-list if it is important to you - most diving is within a 30 minute boat ride of the resort and covers a range of depths. As a recreational diver with a depth limit of 40m I was worried that I wouldn't be able to visit many wrecks but there are a large number of wrecks well within recreational limits and some very interesting ones in very shallow water (<20m).
If there was a downside to our trip it would be that it isn't really possible to explore Chuuk on your own, we were told that walking out of the resort into town was not a good idea - you'll see why on the trip from the airport - which is a big shame. However we did spend our last day on a nearby island having a BBQ and watching a family of black tip reef sharks - it was an island BBQ trip booked through the dive shop and well worth doing.
All in all a great holiday was had by all and we would go back in a heartbeat.

I came here in November 2011 with my parents (61 and 71; I'm in my thirties). Had an amazing time - like summer camp for divers. Food is good (get used to repetition if you're here for a while); rooms decent. Beds reasonably comfortable. This is not a luxury resort, but a great family-run place. Get to know your dive guides and they'll fill you in on the best places to dive, best times, etc. They'll take really good care of you.

I saw a couple of non-divers here; however, not sure what they did all day. Not really a place for non-divers as no beach per say. You can snorkel off one of the jetties but the visibility is so-so.

I actually got homesick for this place once I left - we went on to Palau and Yap, where accommodations are more luxurious, but there is less feeling of togetherness. Something about everyone having a common goal (diving the wrecks) makes Blue Lagoon really special.

Enjoy!

I stayed at the Blue Lagoon Resort both before and after my week aboard the Truk Odyssey liveaboard dive boat. For anyone interested in diving the wrecks of Chuuk Lagoon the Odyssey is the best way to go.Great staff, great food, great boat, great diving. But back to the BLR. Weno, the main island of the Chuuk atoll, does not have a lot of interest to tourists other than world famous wreck diving. The BLR has a terrific location, right on the water, with beautiful grounds. The restaurant is fine, though service is slow. The rooms, however, are in need of renovation. The carpets are stained as are the curtains and walls. The water pressure and temperature leave something to be desired. Nonetheless the rooms are functional and the staff is friendly. One minor detail that BLR deserves credit for is leaving huge dispensers of filtered water in the bathrooms. Too often hotels in areas where the water is not safe for visitors to drink give only one small bottle of water per day - not enough in tropical climates.

If you are going to Chuuk I would recommend staying at the Blue Lagoon Resort. Just don't expect the Ritz Carlton.

Diving here fantastic staff are great & the best land based accommodation on the island. Compared to USA Australia NZ this may be 3 star but in comparison to the surroundings it's 5 star. Chuuck has a large unemployment problem & the long bumpy ride from the airport will show u that but when u arrive here it's safe, clean, staff are friendly and if there's a problem they fix it. For those critics who whinge & moan about the tiniest probs don't come to Micronesia, it's a lay back place with very poor people living in tough conditions. Some ignorant people complained in reviews about power blackouts, it's a remote place and the power is supplied by diesel generator which at set intervals are rotated through their work. If they had been kind enough to ask the locals they would know why. The power switches off momentarily as they swap from one generator to another, If a 2second interruption will devastate your holiday stay away from this beautiful place. I did have a tv in my room but never turned it on, when you have a balcony with a view of the ocean (every room has) to waste your time in front of the goggle box is ridiculous, every morning noon & night a cold drink and a stunning view awaits, enjoy! I will include the dive shop in my review as they are in the complex, our guides & drivers were great, engage with them, listen & follow their every word. We had a big group of 10 in 2 boats, different levels of divers and all of us had a great time. Don't mistake lay back for disinterested, our guides were relaxed but fully intent of making sure we were safe and enjoyed every second of our time below, they fully maximized every dive to it's potential. Had enough of the best wrecks on the planet, well I recommend your last day out with zero on a fishing charter, 2 of us fished outside the lagoon for 13 tuna all caught on handline. At one stage our boat was surrounded by tuna "busting up white bait" so loud infact we couldn't here ourselves talk. Our boat literally sat in a 50m diameter patch of tuna for 10 mins absolutely amazing. When we got back the chef made us sushami, it was to die for, the rest we gave to be shared amoungst the very happy & appreciative locals. Absolutely great location and despite the poverty & conditions on the island this place maintains a safe clean and acceptable level of accommodation. Highly recommend truk blue lagoon, look past the moderate decor see the beauty in the people & the surrounds and you will love every second you spend here!

I went here on a five day dive package in March 2011 on my way to Palau. The on-site dive shop was great, every morning the boat was ready, you walk along a garden path five minutes, pick up your gear from the dive locker and hop on board. Divers usually stay in a unit closest to the shop, with surrounding units overlooking the small white sand beach and lagoon. Yes there really is a lagoon with a nice tropical landscape. There is a large onsite restaurant with decent food and big glass windows overlooking the beach, outdoor bar and a gift/snack shop. Considering Truk is not an over developed tourist spot, for an out of the way island, Truk Lagoon is a rustic but nice place to stay, especially if you enjoy wreck diving and WW2 history.

Room Tip: There is a small island/atoll close by with 2 cabins for an extra private holiday owned by the resor...

The location is magic , the veiws are stunning , the diving fantasic.
The rooms are basic, everything works most of the time, you have daily powerouts ( short ones ) but you do not come to this resort for the facilitys of the hotel it is all about the diving.
Food is ok , not 5 star by any lengths but basic stuff - hamburgers and sandwichs. reasonably priced as well.
the katsudon is good , as our the moen doughnuts if they have tuna - it is awesome super fresh and very tasty.
the service is resonable and people are genuine
( say hello to everyone - talking to them goes a long way - by the end of the week was chatting with quite a few of the staff who were very shy to begin with, ).
if you are fussy about cracked tiles and outdated carpet dont go to this resort.
the drive to the resort is an experience in itself.

We took a trip to Chuuk August 1-10th (2011) with a medical mission team based out of Little Rock. The town of Weno is very impoverished, even more than what we had expected and our help was well received. The bus ride from the airport to the Blue Lagoon is about 5 miles and takes right around 45 minutes. Roads are currently being worked on.

We arrived at the resort, shocked at how beautiful the grounds were and well kept everything was. The staff was very helpful and hospitable, glad that we were there. I completely understand where people are coming from when they say this place is rough, while it is "rustic" around the edges, keep in mind, it is the best (and by far safest) place to stay in Chuuk and was built in the late 70s. Taking that into consideration, the place has done a great job maintaining the place. The owner and their family took us out to the resort's privately owned island to snorkel and have a picnic, the amenities out there are extremely nice as well and the snorkeling is unlike any other. I gave this a 5 out of 5 based on the FSM island standards, this establishment has gone above and beyond to provide American-standards at the resort.

The restaurant offered an extremely large menu, the wait was sometimes longer but it always gave us time to reflect on our day. Food was always very good. We ate 10+ meals there and was never unsatisfied.

This is the only place in Chuuk I will stay.
