“Enjoyed my week at the Manta Ray”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 January 2007

My girlfriend and I spent a great week at the Manta Ray hotel. There are few places to stay on Yap - Traders Ridge is probably best for non-divers, but for divers I think the Manta Ray is better, as their dive shop is top-notch. I actually liked the new pool at Manta Ray better than the pool at Traders Ridge, though spent most of the time in the ocean, not the pool. As for food, I thought lunch was better at Traders Ridge (more options for sandwiches), but thought dinner was better on the Mnuw at Manta Ray. Manta also boasts their own beer which is pretty good and a more laid-back vibe for hanging out. Make sure to ask for one of the newly renovated rooms, or rm 301 which has its own private rooftop patio with hot tub.

Manta Ray also has good cultural and kayak tours. I usually hate cultural tours, but Yap is a unique place.

  • Liked — Great dive shop.

We stayed for 1 week in Mar 06 and were very satisfied with the commitment and performance of all staff of the on-site scuba dive shop. We had extraordinary dives with the manta rays and good reef dive sites. The resort in itself is only average with friendly staff and good food but cleanliness of rooms and lobby not the no. 1 priority (e.g. the dead insects on the floor close to the TV weren't removed while we stayed in the room, cockroaches in the bathroom and underneath the bed ...). The small pool is nice, but there is no beach anywhere in reach of the resort. If you go there for diving with the mantas, it's okay, if you plan on spending a tropical beach vacation, stay elsewhere.

Stayed at the Manta Ray Hotel for 6 nights in room 214. The newer room was very clean, great oversized walk in shower, comfortable beds, plenty of room. Looked out over bay and the restored ship they use as kitchen dining and bar. The food was ok, staff great.

Our dive guide, John, and his assistant Mathius, were great. Quiet at first, but we brought them out of their shell. Saw Mantas each day, as well as some good wall dives. Try being dropped off at the inlet as tide is first coming in!! You will have a great drift dive with vertical walls of about 40-80’ on each side of you all the way to the mManta cleaning stations. Also saw schools of barracuda, shark, lots of lion fish. Did the Mandarin Dive, neat for a while but I have ADD and got restless!

Across the street is O’Keefe’s bar and restaurant if you want the same quality food at ½ the price. Also a hotel at the top of the hill, much nicer than Manta Ray but not set up as well for divers. Stop by for a drink at the bar if you can’t find the adult beverage you wish at the Manta Ray Hotel!

The people in Yap are low key, everyone drives the speed limit, everyone will say hello if you initiate and are generally pleasant. Old abandoned airstip across from the newer airport has bullet riddled Japanese Zero and anti aircraft gun worth a look. Visited the other sites on the island in an afternoon (the bank of stone money, etc..)

Overall pleasant, laid back trip to yesteryear.

My family and I just returned from 9 days in Yap. The Manta Rays were a magnificant sight. Although, 9 days was much of an over-kill. With what Yap has to offer 3 to 4 days is plenty of time to spend there. We stayed at the Manta Ray "Resort" Hotel and dove with Yap Divers. Manta Ray Resort Hotel is a 3 star (at best) establishment charging 5 star prices. They refill the complimentary shampoo and conditioner so many time you can no longer read the labels. They dig ice for your drinks out of a trash can lined with a garbage bag. And charge $390
(their neighbor Beyond The Reef charging $130) for the all day fishing trip on a boat that is questionablely seaworthy. Yap Divers which is co-located is certainly not there for the guest. When I asked to go to some other dive sight because we had already been to the Manta sight three times, Freddy the dive coordinator told me no because he would have to operate another boat. Appearently a new group had come in the night before and we had to schedule our vacation around them.
