“Very strange and overpriced "scout hall"!”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

This is definitely one of the strangest places I've ever stayed.
On arrival we walked through the main building/restaurant/reception/office/bar to check in at a little desk at the back. The woman was moderately friendly but it was quickly noted that it was a husband and wife running all operations of the property. You could see into the kitchen from the desk, and there was no way I felt comfortable enough to eat at this place after looking at the preparation area and seeing the 2 owners/cooks who would be making the food.
The room sat 50-60 people! I cannot imagine how 2 people would cook, serve, take orders, clean tables and check-in room guests all at the same time if the place was full!

We had our keys and were told we were staying in the main building. There are 2 stand alone cabins at the front which looked nice, and it was clear they use these 2 cabins alone for their promotion of the property becuase the main building was horrible!!
We parked the car in front and walked into the building, before we opened our bedroom door, we walked past a large empty storage filing cabinet that they obviously just left there because they had no where else to put it, and every door entry to a room had a bible verse on top of it!!
When we walked into our room I couldnt believe how basic it was! There were cups for coffee, but no coffee maker. The bath was horrible and old with stains (see picture) and it was damp and cold. But this wasnt the worst part - even that I could handle.
You can forget sleeping in this place if there are others staying here! The outside facade of the building has wooden stairs running up the front of it to get to the top floor of the "scout hall". We were the front room on the bottom floor, and every time someone walked up or down the hard wooden stairs, it was literally directly next to your head. It was so loud!! Up until midnight all we heard were banging footsteps up and down the stairs!! And anytime someone in the room above went to the toilet you could here the banging footsteps. I cant imagine why anyone who built this thought it would be comfortable?!
The flyer for this place says "modern rooms" is a complete lie! I have seen tents more modern than this.
You would be better off sleeping in your car than sleeping here! Save your money or Pay that bit extra to stay somewhere else!

Room Tip: Do not stay here!!!

All we really did was sleep and a quick bkfst before Denali but no complaints. Price was right, it was quiet and a short walk into town. Bkfst was expensive but try the oatmeal - fabulous. Cook/waitress were great. Bottom line-great for stopover; besides, who's going to spend much time in their room with all that's outdoors??

This is the third time that I stayed in this charming hotel in Talkeetna, a small and pretty town. The owners of Swiss-Alaska are very nice people and treat you as family. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The price is fair and, comparing to other hotels in town, this is the best cost-benefit. It is located in a very quiet place, but close to downtown, just a 5 min. walk through the woods.

As part of a trip to Alaska, one of the hotels we stopped at was the 'Swiss Alaska Inn' our party was treat like royalty, nothing was to much trouble, rooms were spacious, very clean, views out of this world from your room of 'Mount McKinley', or as the locals call it 'Mount Denali'. The owner collected us and our bags from the rail station, and did the same on departure. We would maybe call the town a shanty Town, compared to our own city, but with every amenity that you could ask for. Talkeetna does have it's own brewery, so if you like a pint of beer now and again its worth trying these local ones, plenty of eating places, but remember that you are in America and the portions are large. The boat trip is worth doing, our friends did the plane ride over Mount McKinley, which on that particular day was completely clear of cloud, which is an unusual event.Should you be considering a trip to Alaska, Talkeetna is worth a visit.

We ate breakfast here after it was recommended by a local. We waited 45 minutes for our food to come ( 2 omelettes). There was only 2 people working here - the cook and the waitress, and it was the waitresses first day! I have no complaints about the food, once we finally got it. The omelettes were stuffed with cheese and meat/veggies. There was a pretty decent portion. Not bad and not spetacular. The bill came to $40 for to people for breakfast.....a little pricey for the service and quality.

I would suggest finding somewhere else to eat breakfast!

We had a great time at this place. The rooms were clean and the accommodations were great. The food at the attached restaurant was good as well. There is a nice trail in the back of the hotel that takes you into the center of town. Overall, the price wasn't as pricey as others have stated.

The accommodations were very comfortable and clean. The staff were incredibly friendly throughout our stay, and also helpful whenever we had questions. The inn is just a short walk from downtown so it was always very quiet, but had the convenience of being near all of the action. My husband and I are big into fishing so this was a dream considering it is right next to the river. We were able to get out on the water before anyone else.
