For the same price (if not less) we rented The Black Pearl and also were provided a car (for an additional cost) for this house with full amenities. It's set over the water and has beautiful views, and large airy rooms. The bathroom is to die for and and the house also has a full kitchen and washing machine (so keep this mind when packing---you don't need to bring a lot).
We enjoyed being on the main island during "off season" when we could kibitz with the locals and learn about local culture at our leisure. All of the island recreational activities were available to us and THEY were happy to come to the house to pick us up when we went out on road or water tours. The house shares a dock with the next bungalow down where the Reef Discovery agency came to pick us up one morning. That being said, the house also sits on a small, but well colonized coral reef, so be prepared to snorkel around the house as well. We were aware of this and both where prescription glasses so I ordered prescription snorkel masks from Snorkel-Mart.com which only cost us 49.00 a pair to take with us. The house had a box of flippers and snorkel tubes, so were happily snorkeling on our off off the back dock of the house every morning!
Additionally, the fellow who I presume is the local manager of this rental property (Nir-who also provided us with the car) made himself readily available if we needed anything (we did not, but it was nice that he gave us his cell phone --not just his number--an actual phone) to call if we had any questions about planning anything or had any medical needs).
The only thing in the house we could not figure out how to work (and it was very like user error) was the DVD player. They had a limited number of movies we'd seen but were excited about revisiting, and there was some weird error message that popped up on the player..but no worries! That's not what we're in Bora Bora for, is it!?
We were very happy with our choice of The Black Pearl. Everything worked flawlessly in making the arrangements and having everything ready. Nir was at the boat dock in Vaitape
when we arrived to direct to where banks were and the house was etc. It could not have been more seamless. I actually felt bad for the poor folks who fell victim to the water taxi schedules of the resorts, most of which are out on motus and not on the main island. I'd hate to have my dinner ruined having to watch my schedule to catch the next boat taxi back!
If you don't want to be thrown in with a group of tourists all residing in closely situated water bungalows, please consider The Black Pearl. We certainly recommend it and will go back the next time out travels bring us down to the South Pacific.

I loved the room espeacially at night when the water reflected on the ceiling of the bunglow and your own private dock. I loved the way the fish would come right up to you and eat right out of your hand. We swam with the dolphins which was amazing. Would love to go again soon.

If you are searching for the perfect combination of luxury, relaxation, privacy, and mind-blowing beauty, the Black Pearl is it. In our entire lives, we have never been so relaxed. The Black Pearl offers the opportunity to escape from life and to revel in such rare pleasures. The bungalow is gorgeous. There is a large, fully stocked kitchen with all the utensils and appliances that allow you to cook at home and relax. The living room has comfortable couches, a flat screen television, and all the space you could need. The bedroom is large, comfortable, and clean. The bathroom is beautiful and offers a large shower and a tub. In short, the Black Pearl does not feel like a hotel or a vacation rental; it truly feels like home. We were so comfortable and so blown away that we never wanted to leave.
We started each morning with coffee on the back porch. The porch overlooks the water. Depending on the tides, the time of day, and the angle of the sun, the water literally had 100 different colors of blue and green. When we finished our coffee, we took out the kayaks and paddled along the shore or, on other days, we snorkeled in the water right outside the bungalow. We were surprised that this water was filled with blue, yellow, and striped fish! We sat on the back porch and soaked in the sun while reading books. We did rent a car and we took the 15 minute ride to the beaches of Matira and the restaurants. We cooked dinner several nights of our stay because the Black Pearl was so incredible that we wanted nothing more than to continue relaxing in such opulence.
As if the bungalow itself was not heaven enough, Nir, the manager of the Black Pearl, made the entire stay even more unbelievable. He went so far out of his way to make sure that we had everything that we needed at all times. He made wonderful recommendations for activities and restaurants. And he was always a cheerful voice on the other end of the phone (which he provides you with when at the Black Pearl so that you can always reach him!!). Although we felt like we had our own island and our own home while at the Black Pearl, Nir was our connection to the rest of the island at all times.
When researching Bora Bora, the typical image that appears is the over the water bungalows of one of the luxury hotels, i.e. Ritz Carlton, Intercontinental, etc. The Black Pearl blows these bungalows away. Each of those hotels is on a separate island. The bungalows of the other hotels are not private and, to the contrary, appear to be basically on top of one another. You will have little seclusion and you share the water around your bungalow with the other guests. You also rely upon the often unpredictable and nonresponsive (from what we heard from guests at those hotels) water taxis to get to the main island where the Black Pearl is located. But, not at the Black Pearl!! The Black Pearl offers all of the luxury and accomodations as these luxury hotel bungalows, but, you get the privacy, seclusion, convenience, and comforts of home as well. If you are deciding between the Black Pearl and one of those other hotels, the Black Pearl is not only the cost efficient choice, but, the BEST choice for activities, beauty, and privacy!! It will blow you away. We would recommend the Black Pearl A MILLION other times over. It is home and luxury and exquisite opulence all in one. You will not be sorry!!!
If you have extra time, combine your stay at the Black Pearl with a few nights at Rohotu Fare Lodge for the perfect over the water bungalow - mountainside stay combination!! It is true paradise every minute of the day.

What a wonderful place to spend a honeymoon! The bungalow was perfect...it had a great kitchen, a beautiful bathroom and shower, great views from EVERY window and the most beautiful deck over crystal clear water! The caretaker helped with dinner reservations, scuba diving, adventure excursions etc...we cannot say enough about the beauty that awaits you in Bora! We cannot wait to go back! We look forward to staying at the Black Pearl! Thank you for everything!

This is a beautiful full house over the water with kayaks under the house and all the space and necessities for a nice stay. Negatives were: the BBQ never worked the whole time there no matter how many times I called; Safe wouldn't let us in once so we did not use it anymore; There are a few fish around the house but not many for snorkeling; (maybe we were stupid) but could never get a movie to show up on the TV screen - (could hear it but never see it): The house is far enough out you really do need a car.
There is a nice little beach next to the house and beauty and privacy were wonderful. Matira Beach on the southern end of the island is where you want to spend most of the days for a good beach, good snorkeling, good food. It is 32 KM around the island (great road) and this house is equal distance from Matira Beach whichever way you go.
The place was very clean and most everything else worked great. Newly marrieds and people who want quiet this is the place.
Do go the Lagoonaquarium Cruise. It is the BEST. Not a lot of action on the island itself. Most on the motus around the island. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
