My husband and I were vacationing in this hotel complex in April 2012. The hotel consists of two parts. The first and most of the mainland, the other part is located on a separate island? called Motu. Between them runs a boat. The fare of about $ 10 per person. If we consider that the main restaurants and entertainment are on the mainland - every boat trip coasts a lot of money. Hotel shuttle to the city or to the aiport for money. In this hotel the movie was "The Hurricane," directed by Dino De Lourentis and Mia Farrow. Beautiful view, clean and calm sea, the entire hotel is located above the water, except for reception, bar and restaurant. Also there is a small complex of beach houses along the sandy coastal strip. Food in the restaurant expensive, but portions are really small. It is better to go to the local cafes and restaurants. About 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel. We lived in a small house near the water. It was noisy from the drive down the road on the mainland. As if we were living on the road. We chose this hotel because of promotions and low prices for our rest period. Overall, satisfied. But next time we will look for a new hotel.

I stayed in Sofitel Bora Bora for about 1 week in March 2011. I had a bungalow in the Laguna. Bora Bora is a paradise in earth. I had chosen Bora Bora as the place to rest as it was in the middle of my tour around the world. I liked a lot the place, much less the lack of hospitality of the staff at the reception. Bad relationship price / quality. You pay even for the air you breathe. Checking out the hotel presented a bill for the extras with a number of items that I didn’t consume and an exhorbitant charge for a 1 minute phone call to Sofitel Moorea.

First of all i really like to thank you to stay with us in the middle of your magnifique around the world tour! i can understand that Bora Bora may look much more expensive to compare the other destinations including the cost of the telephone which should get better after the installation of the optic fiber (soon). The wi fi will be complimentary on Sofitel Private island side starting April 1st 2013, Sofitel is working hard to find the best solution to get the best value for money in our specific environment. This is our concern. In the meantime we just finalized our trial to be full part of earth check programm and we are now certified, that mean that all our efforts and direction will help to improve the quality with great value for money in the respect of the environment.

As accommodations go on the main island, this place has a great set up -- the pool, beach, bar flow seamlessly -- and the water is quite nice on the property. Our bungalow was very nice for the price and had a large deck over the water although it was not actually an over water bungalow. The thing that made our experience less great was the staff. Most everyone who works there seems rather apathetic, from the bartender who plays Bon Jovi loudly on a loop (come on, it's 10 am) to the concierge booking activities. Their apathy crossed over from irksome to deeply aggravating when we had two miscommunications/mistakes made by them that really screwed up our daily plans. After the second, we called up the manager, Jean Louis, who, to his credit, was very understanding and did his best to rectify our stay. My overall take is that it's a lovely spot and you can snag rooms here for a very good price considering it's Bora Bora. But if you can afford it, definitely stay on the Sofitel's private island. The bungalows and set up over there are vastly superior and I'd argue, worth the money if you're celebrating something big.

I stayed four nights at the Sofitel Bora Bora (main island, not private island) in a “luxury lagoon front bungalow’. These are the 1/2 over water variety. If you want the ‘overwater bungalow’ experience, but not the price, I highly recommend this option. I paid about $375 per night (all prices in US $).

I opted for the very expensive ($80 one way), but hassle free resort boat from the airport. The other option is catamaran to town and then a cab (the catamaran is free if you have an Air Tahiti Ticket - unsure of cab cost). I received a warm and thorough email confirming the transportation a few days before my arrival. We received a lei at the airport and the representative showed us to the boat. The ride was spectacular. Upon arrival at the resort we were warmly greeted by the PR manager and received a moist, perfurmed facecloth and our arrival was announced by conch. Then, over a complimentary drink, we sat down and were thoroughly briefed, did the appropriate paperwork and then given a tour. Upon being shown to my bungalow I was thrilled I made this choice and not a garden bungalow or the full overwater bungalow. The lagoon front bungalow is great value. My bungalow was almost fully overwater, had private deck steps into the lagoon and a nice sized deck. The bungalow was beautifully decorated and appointed. You are quite close to the neighboring lagoon front bungalows (you can easily have a conversation with your neighbors) and the true overwater do have more privacy on the decks. The mosquitos, barking dogs and roosters are a bother all night long (these are problems in all FP) so take ear plugs and insect repellant. The private island would alleviate the latter two. A couple ridiculous snags the first morning. I tried for a full hour with multiple calls to room service for breakfast. Never an answer. This is absolutely unacceptable and unforgivable in a resort of this class. I informed reception and they said to call them and from the reaction I assumed this was not the first time. I also read reviews about the illusive beach towels. Indeed at 10am they had run out. I looked around and the entire pool and beach were empty. Again, unacceptable and so easily fixed. It’s not rocket science. Internet was reasonably priced for FP ($5/hour), but was very slow (reminiscent of dial up) and sometimes unavailable - not that one should be using technology in such a beautiful environment.

For those wanting the o/w bungalow experience and don’t mind giving up some privacy (neighboring bungalows and also the main road is just behind the resort) and average service, then this is great value. By the way, generally if weather is not an issue, sit on the LEFT side of the plane flying to Bora Bora for the best view flying in.

Where do I start?

The food:
We opted for the daily buffet breakfast and dinner which we pre-purchased before we arrived. It was extremely cheap so we thought we may as well. When we got there we were pleasantly surprised; due to the small number of people staying instead we were offered a nightly 3 course + cheese menu! the menu was great, usually with 3 choices for each entree, main and dessert. We enjoyed each night and the breakfast was also great. fresh fruits, cereals, hot buffet and pastries were all included.
We also paid a bit extra to travel to the private island and have the sunset cocktail night over there. that was excellent and a must for couples!

The staff:
All around were excellent, in particular the bar and restaurant staff. Extremely hospitable and they made great cocktails. If there was a mix up it was quickly rectified.

Management:
A slight downside; we could see that there was management patrolling the hotel and trying to improve standards. This would have been fine, however they were a little pushy with their staff and they were not very welcoming to the patrons, rather quite brisque and with an air of superiority.

The rooms and ambience:
We stayed in an overwater bungalow and it was absolutely spectacular. We watched the sunrise out the window each morning and had an excellent view of the ocean and island. The room was neat and tidy and had a reasonable sized TV (which we didn't use anyway). The room had a daily turn down service and all of the service staff were very friendly.
The glass piece in the floor is a really nice touch!

Other:
Would highly recommend this hotel. The location is beautiful, the pool is lovely and the beach house have enough activities to keep you occupied. Our only concern; the kids holding spear-fishing guns outside our bungalows where we were swimming :O.

We look forward to coming back on our honeymoon!

Room Tip: Overwater bungalow is well worth the money

We stayed in the hotel back in September. Upon arrival, we found our bungalow to be missing the wow effect that we were anticipating. The size of room is good, it seems clean enough. First impression is that it needs updating, refreshing, a bit more thorough cleaning, especially the bathroom. When we booked, we were told by the reception that the rooms at the garden have more privacy. At the time, we had the option of over the water bungalow or garden for relatively the same price. We now wished that we had opted for the over the water ones, as you do get better view and privacy.

On some days, they ran out of clean beach towels, but the water activity attendees are nice enough to deliver them to you when they were ready.

Food was decent. We found the buffet offering was mostly good, excellent in some cases. We would have liked more local dishes featured. Breakfast selection was overall good. Though if you eat more healthy, do not expect to have the variety that you would be used to.
The a la carte dishes were a total hit and miss. Some are well done, some should not even leave the kitchen and made it to our table. They had made up the efforts with improving the dishes, but overall for the price we paid, some of the a la carte entrees were not even passable. We appreciated the effort regardless. Evening entertainments accompanying some of the dinner service at night was nice. Not pretentious, you get the local culture and talent, which is refreshing. Bar had pretty good drinks, for the most part is worth the price they charge. Food service at the bar is okay, but found the food to come a little slow especially if you are hungry.

We really want to be at the top to provide the pure and traditional local entertaintment at night during diner time with sea food buffets or traditional tahitian oven . Our goal is to share our culture in a great way.
We are preparing for 2013 a big refreshment of our rooms for you to get the wow effect and great design have been developped already by our designers.

We had spent a week at the Sofitel in Moorea and only 1 night in Bora Bora but did not enjoy this one as much.
The room was actually quite large and nice.
The lagoon was definitely not as enticing as the one in Moorea, and the restaurant was not very enjoyable due to very bright lights, cheap decor and furniture.
Service was okay.

Not a spot I would return to but perhaps our judgement is harsher after having been to other hotels in Polynesia.

The good news is that Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach is under process to finalize all new decoration, refreshment and renovation for the interior design to be on line with Sofitel Moorea.
Thank you for your appreciation regarding our service. In case of bad weather we serve diner inside the restaurant instead of the terrace facing the lagoon and the swimming pool which is much on line with the traditional ambiance of Bora Bora. Thank you for all your feed back
