“Moana != Economy”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

The word "Moana" can mean "Economy" in Polynesian, if it is, then Intercontinental Le Moana is probably one of the best "economy hotels" in the world.

We had a 7 night stay in an horizon overwater bungalow in mid April, below is a summary of our experiences:

Pros:
* Great location on the main island - we took the free ferry from airport to town and another 1000XPF for a ride (just ask the locals) to get to the hotel (no need to pay $$$ for a shared boat from airport to hotel)
* Great welcoming experience at reception with flowers, wet towel and a free drunks voucher (as IC ambassador)
* Room with good view of waters, mountain and sofitel private island
* Very well appointed room with aircon, free wifi, fish feeding table, couch, 2 TVs, bath tub, and a deck to get into the water
* There are cheap restaurants just outside the hotel door, eg. pizzas around 1800XPF, steaks around 2500XPF. There's also a tour booking agent, which is slightly cheaper than hotel. (We booked our tour direct with operator) There is also a few shops where you can hire bikes/scooters etc. We hired a scooter for half day for 5000XPF
* There's a public beach next to hotel with amazing sunset
* The best housekeeping staff I have seen!
* Free snorkel equipment
* Reasonably priced meals and drinks at the hotel
* Free canoe breakfast for honeymooners staying 6 nights or more
* Generally more fish in the area with many reefs near the rooms.

Cons:
* No longer free to travel to IC Thalasso, Cost is 1700XPF return per person. This is disappointing because transfer from Thalasso to Le Moana is actually free.
* We weren't able to get a free upgrade to a night to Thalasso like so many people were able to. We were told repeatedly we had to arrange it ourselves with the hotel. (May be our rate from Expedia was low?)
* The toilet is a bit smelly, not sure if it's the sewage pipe or humidity
* It can be quite windy at times which means kayaking can be tiring due to the choppy water. We went to IC Thalasso and Le meridan, the water there is a LOT calmer.
* Good buffet breakfasts but variety is smaller than Thalasso.

Overall, we had a great time in Le Moana, would have given it a 5 star if we didn't have such high expectations.

First trip to Bora Bora and it was the greatest experience ever, and being in the Navy, trust me I travel all over, and Bora Bora was just another world. The resort itself had great views, free paddleboards, kayaks and snorkeling gear, plus one of the best reefs to snorkel is just a short kayak trip away. You can take the boat shuttle to the Intercontinental Thalasso if so desired which I hardly recommend, the waters are calmer and little wind at that side of the lagoon since the water is protected by huge coconut trees. The staff at both resorts were just great human beings, willing to assist you at all times, and you can tell they do things from the heart, not like lots of other people in the world that are really fake, I was really impressed by the Tahitian people. By the way the Thalasso resort offers free Stingray feeding every day at 2pm, so we had no need to go pay for a tour for Stingrays, and if you stay at the Intercontinental in Moorea Island, the blacktip sharks and stingrays are also a short kayak trip away, so that was also free, great experience to swim with the sharks in just 5 feet of water. I did my travel package with Lisa Corso through Tahiti Legends, I honestly truly recommend Lisa, she is got tons of experience with Tahiti and she made our trip just that much more hassle-free, I'm definitely booking all my trips with her from now on, she included breakfast in our package, which let me tell you is a must have when at Bora Bora, since breakfast can run you about 90 dollars for two people per day. If you are looking for the perfect vacation, just a great country with amazing people, a beautiful paradise, look no further and stay at the Intercontinental and book with Lisa Corso from Tahiti Legends.

Room Tip: Moana's overwater bungalows have only about 4 feet of water, which we didnt mind, because we har...

My partner and I stayed at this property from April 9th - 13th. Both the resort and the island were and are simply amazing. We stayed in one of the overwater bungalows, booking a lagoon location, but were upgraded to "Horizon", (#20). The Horizon Bungalows were further out on the chain of overwater units, and as other posters have said, have a much better view and more privacy. Although I would think any of the bungalows would be very private. The further out, the better view of the mountain and little island right off shore. Things we liked?

1) Lelani (SP?) She helped us check in, showed us around and made sure (sadly) we had transport back to the airport when it was time to leave.

2) Location of our bungalow and location on the island. Definitely go for overwater, and definitely nice being on the island and able to walk to local restaurants like Bloody Mary's (great seafood and atmosphere) and Tiery Market (short walk up the street for donuts, picnic fixins and Vino)

3) The rooms (again we were in an overwater bungalow) were amazing. They positioned a tiny coral reef under a glass coffee table in the sitting area, so there were always beautiful, colorful fish to see or feed. Beds were amazingly comfortable, the bathrooms well outfitted and the air-conditioning worked very well if you didn't want to feel the breeze blowing through the windows with them open.

4) Paddle boards, canoes with outriggers and kayaks were all out and ready to go with paddles and life preservers. Readily available any time we wanted to use them.

5) Snorkelling was great, and there was an awesome spot right on the west side of the little island directly off shore from the resort. GREAT snorkelling, lots of sea horses, coral and colorful fishes. We even saw a large ray out there one day.

To sum it up, location was perfect, accomodations were awesome and the staff all wonderful. Thank you for such an amazing vacation!

Room Tip: Horizon rooms were the best (IMO)

Hubby and I chose Intercontinental Le Moana as our Bora Bora honeymoon resort because one of our friends highly recommended it to us as being very accommodating and according to him, offers exceptional service to guests. However, our experience here is not as good as our friend.

1. Le Moana is not all that accommodating

We contacted the resort well in advance and 2 weeks prior to arrival we again requested for an OWB between 21 and 27 as my friend got exactly what he asked for. However, we were given a different room. We spoke to the front desk manager Claire who told us that rooms 23 to 27 were under renovations so they could not move us there, but we actually saw people living in at least some of those bungalows supposedly are under renovation. We also asked to exchange for a night at Thalasso after reading many success stories on TripAdvisor, but no luck for us as we were told we will have to arrange it ourselves and pay the rate difference – no hard feelings but it is a bit disappointing considering we are spending 7 nights at Le Moana as IC ambassadors.

2. Service is OK but not exceptional

The staff who are cleaning our rooms is very good, others are OK so do not set your expectation too high. The bar is clearly understaffed between 5 and 7, we could not place an order after waiting for quite a while and decided to leave.

3. NO free shuttle from Le Moana to Thalasso

Everyone including all the locals in Bora Bora we spoke to is unaware of this new charge (1700XPF per person return) for the shuttle boat from Le Moana to Thalasso. My husband actually called the reception the night before about the charge and was told that the morning shuttle is free and the charge only applies after 4pm. However, we were told otherwise at the dock the next morning. I was unhappy so went to the reception, but was told that the lady who my husband spoke to just came back from holiday and did not know the new rule. Well this is a pretty lame excuse - a resort of this calibre should provide sufficient staff training. After my protest they waived the fee. The other insulting thing is, the shuttle boat is definitely free from Thalasso to Le Moana according to the information board on the dock at Thalasso. It feels like Le Moana guests are treated like second class in this respect.

Overall, if your budget allows, it may be wise to stay at Thalasso for its much calmer waters which is good for water activities. The scenery there is way better too. Le Moana is as everyone else says is quite windy. More importantly, the service we received at Thalasso was a lot better.

Dear Sherry Z, Ia Orana,
We deeply regret that, in your experience, we had fallen short your expectations. The matters you have raised were thoroughly investigated with our Department Heads and we could effectively remember the specificity of your request for some bungalow numbers. This request was registered on your reservation, whereas we cannot guaranty the availability in advance. We can confirm you that those bungalows were unfortunately under renovation during your stay, from April 2nd (or closed because next to the works area). Upon arrival, the person on duty offered you to move to another bungalow available on the day after, which you declined.
Regarding our sister property, the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa, our Establishments are very different. The ‘Thalasso’ is a 5 stars Resort, whereas ours is a 4 Stars and reservations are not interchangeable from one to another.
Once again, we trust you will understand that we cannot guaranty any specific bungalow number. However we were pleased to offer the benefit of the upgrade for an overwater bungalow all along your stay, as an Ambassador member.

As per the shuttle boat service between both InterContinental Resorts, a charge was set up from April 1st this year. We sincerely apologize for the miscommunication and that’s why we precisely offered not to charge the service to you. The fact that it is free for the guests of the InterContinental Thalasso Resort is absolutely normal: the persons who pay for staying on the motu have no other choice than using this shuttle when coming to the island, whereas our guests at the ‘Le Moana’ would benefit from the privilege to use all facilities of the sister property; once again a five star Resort, which is not the same price.

We thank you Sirs to make us aware of your experience. Whereas the matters you raised are not common in our property, we’ll seriously consider it for improvement of our services. Our Establishment is always much honored being recommended by our guests, as your friends did. We sincerely regret that you couldn’t experience the same satisfaction.
Once again, we thank you for your patronage.
Yours sincerely,
Isabelle

We traveled to Bora Bora on the second portion of our honeymoon after spending 4 nights in Moorea. The island is unbelievable and we were blessed with a couple of days of pure bliss (weather-wise). The only compliant I could possibly have about this trip is it rained for 3 days while we were there. I would highly suggest, that when paying what it costs to come to Bora Bora, come during dry season (April to September). It will be more expensive, however you will be able to fully enjoy every day. There was a couple days we spent in our bungalo because the weather didn't allow us out to do anything else.

The hotel itself is fantastic. We were greeted by the general manager, thanked for being an Ambassador member (which I would highly recommend - got us an upgrade in Moorea and Bora Bora) and basically treated like royalty while on the hotel grounds. The free shuttle to Thallaso is nice as well, because if you want a change of scenery, you can go over to the sister resort. We weren't planning on going there, however with the rain, we decided to take advantage of the Spa facilities over there, which were amazing.

The food is great and everyone at the hotel is extremely accommodating. The rooms were very nice and the bathroom is fantastic. If you are interested in seeing the inside of the room, check out my youtube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-SycO68TGo

Some quick cool things about the hotel/trip:
1) Visit the town once, it's cool but will only take you about an hour or two to see everything.
2) Excursions really make the trip - Pure Snorkeling was our favorite.
3) The location of this hotel is ideal because it is on the main island, which means it is easier to get to restaurants (Check out Bloody Mary's - some of the best and the freshest seafood I've ever had. The hotel resturant is fantastic too - we ate there every day for lunch and every night but the night we went to Bloody Mary's.
4) If you've read other reviews, you've seen comments about the wind. This was not a factor for us. There was a comfortable breeze, but it is a humid 85 degrees, so the breeze was welcomed.

Hotel was fantastic, trip of a life time, everyone is accommodating. Highly recommended.

Most likely our family's last spring break vacation. Wit pending college graduations, that will put the pressure on as everyone will try too hard. We had a great time. This could be one of the best venues on the island if you are there more than a couple of days. There are newer, more expensive, and exotic properties on the Island. However, The Intercontinental gives you two resorts in one location. Several of the resorts are on the reef island surrounding the lagoon. It means you are captive to the property without a boat taxi to the main island or other attractions. La moana is on the nicest beach on the island and until mid afternoon ther are free shuttle boats to sister property which has work out facilities, a terrific spa, manta ray feedings and currently top notch luxury appointed public buildings. The mainland property has a smaller more intimate setting. A smaller more indigenous scale fitting the location. It has beautiful views and access to many other activities. You have the ability to walk to other resorts, have restaurant taxis pick you up for meals, attractions are also within walking distance like boat, jetski or atv rentals.
We thought of it as the best of both worlds. If you were up early, you could have breakfast at other resort and use the work out room and come back for scuba diving in the afternoon. Then get picked up for any of the excellent dining options on the main island. We had two bungalows and felt the accommodations were very comfortable. Staff went out of their way as were touched by a tropical storm with damaging winds on our first days. It could have been a disaster but it was not. On any return trim to the Island, I know where I will stay.

Room Tip: spa at other location

My husband and I stayed here from march 4th-7th. We stayed in an over water bungalow which was amazing and beautiful inside. The people there go out of their way to make you as comfortable as possible. The view was beautiful from our deck and we had immediate access to the lagoon from our deck also to swim and snorkel. We went for our anniversary and it was perfect. We visited their sister island by boat which they provided at no charge and it was also amazing. We joined one of the locals there in feeding the rays raw tuna. It was an awesome experience! The beach there was beautiful and we spent 1/2 a day there. Drinks were expensive but we were already prepared for that. I would recommend a bike ride of the island to experience the full beauty of this island. Bora Bora is our favorite of our island vacations for the relaxation and beauty. The garden at this hotel is amazingly tropical. :)

Room Tip: Some of the bungalows are way out from the island so a longer walk back to the island. Ours was in t...
