Pontfaen House was my grandmothers family home, she was one of 16 children who lived in this beautiful house. My mother who is now in her 80's spent the majority of her childhood in and around this wonderful mansion, playing in the orchards and fields of which there were plenty. My brother and I were fortunate to spend many a wonderful day at Pontfaen house, exploring the grounds and the cellars, and I was able to ride family ponies through the orchards and fields safely without a car in sight. The chapel situated on the grounds is a beautiful chapel and whether religion is important to you or not, the chapel is well worth a look. Many of my family are buried on the churchyard.
I always remembered the rear gardens being full of chickens and ducks and other farmyard animals and spent hours searching for fresh eggs before going indoors and being spoiled by my Aunty Mary with Scones and jam and fresh bread and butter. She always had a sweet tin which she would hand out parma violets or some other sweetie favourite.
Earlier this year my mother took all the family back to Pontfaen house, this time my brother and I took our children and my grandchildren as well.
The gardens have changed a lot and there is an enormous grass lawn with a fantastic tree house and rope swings which is perfectly safe even for younger children. We had many a game or rounders and cricket on the lawn and had a wonderful time.
The house itself is beautiful and is really like stepping back in time.
The caretakers live in the other half of the house, and they couldn't do enough for us. Very nice friendly accommodating people.
They do allow dogs which was great as I have two small dogs who also loved the gardens.
Although the house itself is in the Gwaun Valley, it is only a short drive through beautiful countryside to the many beaches available to visit including Pwllgwaelod, Cwm yr Eglwys and Newport Sands. Fishguard and the Goodwick harbour is only about 5 miles away and the little picturesque Fishguard Harbour is lovely with a very nice reasonably priced café .
I would definitely go back again, this house holds some very precious memories both new and old.
