We had booked a week here and was travelling with our 5 teenage children. We have previously gone to Egypt 5 times now and was not really that concerned about the reviews we had read on tripadvisor as we have never had a bad experience in this country or hotels before. However there was certain issues that had happened which i feel you must be aware off.
Average flight but very cramped and uncomfortable especially for a 5+ hours flying time. food on flight as usual not very appetising but then who cares when they know they are going to a hot country or somewhere where you are going to relax.
We got of the plane and was welcomed by a lovely warm breeze sun was just going down so we know the weather was going to be great for the week we had booked. You go into the airport and there you are meet by someone who is representing your hotel, you are then told to queue to retrieve your visa for entry in Marsa Alam. Therefore we joined the queue and when aventually we got to the front after 10mins or so we was told they do not accept dollars so we was unable to get the visa. They was not very helpful and did not tell us where to get a visa from as all we had money wise was dollars. This kind english man approached us and informed us that just as you walk into the airport on your left is a small kiosk where you can obtain your visa and they will accept dollars there. We then queued again to obtain our visa's which were $15.00 per person. After spending approx 45mins queuing for this and that you then get your bags and are meet outside by your rep. Our rep was called Amanda. Transfer time to hotel approx 5-10mins.
First impression very good the hotels as normal in Egypt was stunning big grand glass front. Reception area very big and spacious. Check in was quick and easy we was allocated 2 family rooms ground floor and was in our rooms within approx 15mins later. By this time the sun had gone down so unable to see the proper views until morning. At present in total 748 rooms, but more are being added.
great big spacious family rooms. Consisted of 1 queen size bed 2 smaller beds tea/coffee facilities and 3 litre water bottles which was replenished every day, hairdryer situated in the bathroom was good. Clean towels and sheets every day. Laundry service available, sewing kit, vanity kit and small bottles of shampoo, lotion and soap. Safe deposit in the wardrobe at no extra charge. good amount of clothing space. Balcony with sun lounger table and two chairs. Large plasma t.v in bedroom which have a stereo volume control in the bathroom which the kids loved. So while showering they could still listen to there music top whack no doubt.
The main restaurant: Very large room yes it does resemble an old school canteen. Food was plentyful and a good variety every day for breakfast lunch and dinner.Lots of meat based food which was all cooked very well. There is a kiddies corner right at the back of the restaurant which did have chips and burgers etc...There is a pasta station which was very nice you could choose which toppings you had, also mornings there was fresh omelets being made for you while you wait. Salad bar which was good and fresh also the puddings were delicious. In the day we tended to sit outside for lunch and inside for evenings. So in total the food for an all-inclusive restaurant was very good.
Al La Carte restaurant next to the main one in the lobby area of the hotel but to be honest we never saw anyone in there in the whole of the week we was there.
Beach Restaurant: Visited just once with the kids they do only do pizza looked very nice kids enjoyed and good views. There are toilets at the beach behind the beach restaurant.
Drinks in the restaurant quite poor if you ask for wine you get a 1/4 glass full which was poor I thought, very slow service for drinks. Although the staff where very friendly.Akmad was our friendly waiter.
good sized area of beach and lots of sun loungers not to uncomfortable. The white flag was up the whole of the week apart from one day with the black flag flying unable to swim. You do need reef shoes if you want to walk from the beach to the water to paddle as coral around everywhere and very sharp as my youngest son found out. To get into the water you have to walk through the beach restaurant which is usually empty and take the long walk along the jetty to get to the end. However once there the snorkelling is amazing and plenty of beautiful fish to be seen.
Beach bar good opens at 10.00 till sunset you can get variety of drinks here.
Large swimming pool area which consisted of two: One was heated and very warm indeed the kids spent most of the time in this one. The other was very very cold I mean almost to the point of freezing however once in there it was not to bad. I actually preferred this one to the warm one.I think thats because it had a pool bar.
Lots of sunlougers again very comfortable and a good sized area around the pool so no need to panic as space is plentiful. Pool bar area staff very friendly and keep you topped up with your drinks only downfall is you can not stay in the cold pool for long. No toilets at the pool area but not really a problem as toilets can be found in the main reception or if your room closer you can use them.
Opens at 5.00pm till midnight just outside the restaurant so you can sit outside or sit in the main bar. They serve all local spirits (which are not weak at all) and beer cocktails only certain ones all-inclusive but good variety ask for the menu.
You can enjoy a shisha on the terrace my husband had two for 55.50LE.
You can not have wine on the terrace only with your meal in the main restaurant, which was a bit annoying for me as I do enjoy the wine when on holiday. The service for drinks was very very poor and slow we waited 45mins for cokes for the smaller children eventually I went to the main bar to get them myself which was almost frowed upon by the staff, still they took another 10mins to bring them out..
Not great to be honest but as we was a large family it did not really bother us, the animation team had volleyball and aqua aerobics daily in the heated pool. On an evening they start the mini disco at 8.30pm till 9.00pm which our teenagers actually joined in for a laugh what a sight, well we was there to enjoy. At 10.00pm on a couple of evenings they did have 2 shows which where ok and broke the evenings up abit.
On the 2rd day we was there our teenage daughter went back to her room while we sit and had a coffee on the terrace still daylight hours. To cut the story short she was assaulted by a member of the staff who worked in the garden areas of the hotel. You can imagine my horror and disbelief when I found out. I immediately went to see the manager of the hotel and was spoken to by customer relations Lady Heather. My daughter had to explain what had happened to her, Heather was very understanding and spoke very good english. She immediately got the ball moving to found out who this staff member was. I also spoke to Amanda our rep who was mortified what had happened and understanding to our daughter. The next day a meeting was called with ourselves and the manager of the hotel, who was very friendly and disgusted what had happened to our daughter at his hotel by a member of his staff. The staff member was found and locked up the night before as a witness had come forward so they was able to trace this man. He was immediately sacked and shamed by his family we was given all assurance by the manager he was to be escorted back to his family that day. We was given a family meal at the al la carte restaurant by the manager basically to compensate what had happened. Although our daughter was not hurt this act did frighten her and more. So please be aware of your young girls.
Also the day of our departure we had to go and see Amanda again to inform her that our other daughters moblie charger was taken from her room and the other daughters perfume was all smashed up by someone trying to open it. Photos where taken of the perfume and at this moment this is in hand, again Amanda very understanding. Like I said before we have been to egypt 5 times and we know what to expect but this we did not expect.
Our rooms was right next to the building work going on so early morning woke up calls from the work men was not ideal, also a scorpion was found by us in our room which we took a photo of and showed our waiter who ran off the next min we had lots of suited man asking if we ok etc.... room was checked unknow to us this scorpion was highly dangerous!!!!! Did not see agin for the week thank god,Cockroach found in other room only seen once. Sharp piece of wire sticking up from floor in room unfinished?
Sum the holiday up
Yes we did have a good time with our family we made it good. Our daughter was ok which was the main thing but should not of happened the the first place.
All staff very friendly apart from the few staff at the terrace bar.
Drinks service very poor and slow.
Weather great and hot.
Good shopping variety in the hotel and they will haggle.
