GATE CREEK CABINS

We stayed in the Trapline Cabin at Gate Creek Cabins June 6-8, 2007. Gate Creek Cabins are located 10 miles east on Petersville Road, just off the Parks Highway in Trapper Creek, which is very close to Talkeetna. Petersville Road is paved until about mile 9, where it turns to gravel. We followed our map and the road signs and easily found the cabins. We were greeted by Coozie, a huge English Yellow Lab, as friendly as can be! Susie and family welcomed us to their beautiful property. What a location!!! We got checked in and Susie brought us to our cabin. The log cabin was amazing! It had a full-sized kitchen with everything we could need, two bedrooms, living room with a large sofa, TV, and small collection of books and games, bathroom with toilet, sink and shower, dining area with a table and chairs and a huge deck with a grill, picnic table, chairs and views of the mountains and two lakes.
There are several cabins located on the property, but they are spread out so privacy was never a concern. This place was spectacular and the perfect place to spend the last few days of our vacation! We grilled dinner on the deck, watched movies and relaxed.
We were told about two momma moose in the area, so we anxiously kept an eye out for them, and we were rewarded for our patience! I just happened to peek out the sliding doors at the right time and saw a moose. A MOOSE! Out our window! I grabbed my camera and my husband grabbed the camcorder. We slowly opened the sliding door and made our way out onto our deck. We video taped and took pictures as we saw this one moose transform into the momma moose with two twin babies! Oh, it was exhilarating!!! I sat down on our deck and shot photos through the railing. My husband stood and videotaped as the moose made their way across the yard to the front of our deck. The babies stopped to look at us as momma munched on tree leaves. They were no more than 15 feet from us. We had about 15 glorious minutes with these amazingly cute creatures in our back yard before they meandered along the road to the north. They walked through the front yard in evening, too.
Up in Trapper Creek, we had dinner at the Trapper Creek RV Park (the blue building). Their chili was delicious, and the sandwiches we ordered were huge! We took advantage of the free Wifi while we ate. We also drove the Petersville Road all the way west to the Forks Roadhouse. The road is very rough, but the scenery was beautiful. We stopped at the local grocery store on Petersville Road. They have everything you need there. The Forks Roadhouse at the end of the road serves food and drinks. The only wildlife we spotted along the way was a porcupine. He was cute!
I know moose and porcupines don’t necessarily belong in a property review (kind of like when people knock a property for having bad weather. Ha!) but the whole experience added to the quality of our stay at Gate Creek Cabins. Everything at Gate Creek was perfect from the cabin and location to our hosts. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay.
