“great view”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

it takes about 5 minutes to take it all in. I wish they offered tours to the bottom. There is an RV park right on the rim where we would like to stay sometime. Holes cut into the fence for good pictures. Once in a while you can view a truck in there which gives good perspective.

“Great because it is so very close and handy and FREE!”
Reviewed 15 January 2014

Harrison Lavender faithfully stayed at Phelps Dodge for decades. Tried new advanced mining techniques at Jerome. This pit named after him, revolutionized modern mining. It allowed low grade ores to be mined at low cost allowing the advancement in electronics (phone, TV, Radio, Cell Phone, Electricity, eben Survielance Systems). It is one minute east of downtown Bisbee and right alongside the highway.

“Great to see and FREE.”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

Worth a quick look and picture or two. FREE to pull over and park and look down into the deep pit used for mining. Some pretty colors reflected in the water below. Only takes 5 min to see, so if in Bisbee a must see.

“Awe-inspiring”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

This pit is actually an enormous hole in the ground dug by copper miners who lived in and around Bisbee. It's hard to imagine the work that went into digging this "canyon". It is made up of many layers and many colors. Beautiful, awe-inspiring, and very colorful. This would have been quite a different work experience from the tunnels of the Copper Queen Mine. Free to park and view. Self-directed tour with signage.

“Hard to miss”
Reviewed 21 November 2013

This is one big 'ol hole in the ground. If you've never seen an open-pit mine you need to see this. If you're traveling to Bisbee you'd be hard-pressed not to see it either going in or out of town. I told my wife and son I wanted to see it and they thought I was crazy, but when they looked at it they were impressed as well. It really engenders mixed feelings. On the one hand it's impressive to think that a mountain once stood there and then it was removed bit by bit. And it was what built this community with the proceeds. On the other hand, it's a big hole in the ground and doesn't appear that it will ever be anything more than that.
