“Arizona the way it used to be!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2014

O.K. this is supposed to be a review of the Jacob Lake Inn. We will not be staying there until late July. So why did we pick this Historic Place? EASY! From most anywhere in Arizona, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is a long long drive. We have stopped at Jacob Lake multiple times for a meal, gas, camping supplied, and a friendly chat with employees. Food is homemade, and very good. We are very much looking forward to our overnight here and would recommend it without hesitation to friends and family. You've got to expect "vintage" accommodations, and (at times) many people, heck it is the only place to stop for miles! Once the day tourists leave, and the cool northern Arizona night begins we will certainly relish our mini-vacation there!

Room Tip: If Trip Adviser will allow us to post a review after our visit, I'll answer this question.

Thank you for your response. We very much appreciate your understanding of the fact that we are the only ones out there to provide services and it can be challenging, especially on a busy holiday weekend. We are grateful for your realization that we are trying to provide good food, service, accommodation and merchandise in a very remote location. Please come again!

We had researched this Inn extensively through Trip Advisor, prior to our visit to the North Rim. The reviews are fairly average which probably reflects our own experience and it was very much as expected. There are limited accommodation options for the North Rim - the lodge at the rim is not well reviewed either, so we booked at Jacob Lake - a 40 mile drive to the Canyon. We stayed in the 2 storey 'motel' block which was functional and convenient but with somewhat tired fittings which could do with an upgrade. The mattress was much too soft for my liking and I ended up sleeping on the floor, which was a bit more unyielding and to my taste, but that's my own choice. The restaurant was somewhat better than expected and we took dinner there on each of our two nights. The staff were quite friendly, although somewhat harrassed during the early morning rush. One somewhat bizarre incident occurred at check in. Due to interstate time differences we arrived 20 minutes before 3 pm and were told we could not check in until 3 pm, so joined an apparent throng of others awaiting that magic hour. This then caused a long line of guests collecting their keys at 3 pm. It is unclear if all the rooms suddenly became available at this time, or if we were complying with some strange local law. When we arrived at our room 20 minutes later, it seemed like it had been ready for occupancy for some time.
Overall, the experience was as expected. Jacob Lake Inn is one of the few accommodation options for the North Rim and is quite convenient. The accommodation is perfectly adequate and the restaurant is somewhat better than expected. Please note also that the 'lake', such as it is, is nothing to write home about.

Room Tip: The more expensive 'Motel' block is probably your best bet.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that breakfast was so hectic- the Memorial Day weekend was exceptionally busy this year and we had some very new staff members. We hope you will come and let us make it up to you.

I had not expected much from the Jacob Lake Inn and was quite pleasantly surprised by some aspects. Having read reviews of the cabin we decided to stay in a motel room and were pleased with this choice. The room was quite large and clean with WiFi access. We walked down the nearby trail to Jacob Lake and saw several mule deer which was great. The food in the restaurant both at dinner and breakfast was surprisingly good and not too expensive - recommend the trout.

The check in was interesting - we arrived at 2.30 and were told that we had to wait until the official check in time of 3.00pm. This was not a big problem as we went to the nearby Kaibab Forest Visitors Centre and learned a bit more about the local area. Inevitably with everyone waiting for 3.00pm there was an absolute schmozzle as everyone queued to get their allocated rooms and keys. I recommend that you time your arrival to 3.30 pm so that you miss this experience! Must be a better way of organizing this. Although dinner was OK, breakfast was another problem area. Too few tables and too few staff. At 8.30am there was a 20 minute queue for a table - so we opted to eat at the bar. Not sure what was happening but it seemed to be chaotic. It took about 20 mins to give our order and a further 20 - 30 mins before we received our breakfast. I think next time we might stay in the lodge at Grand Canyon even though it was quite a bit more expensive.

Room Tip: The motel rooms were pretty good and perhaps a better choice than the cabins. I suggest you ask for...

Our Double Cabin was underwhelming, to say the least.

The main room of the "cabin" measured approx. 12 ' x 9', so we barely had enough room to bring in our luggage. A small sink was installed in this room, with the toilet and sink in a small adjoining room. There was a closet, but it was so difficult to access we ended up not using it and left as much as we could in our car.

The bed came with two flat pillows, so we had to request another pair from the front desk. The bedding was shabby, as were the rug and other furnishings. There was a large gap below the door to the toilet, which meant absolutely no privacy within these cramped quarters. The water pressure in the small shower and tiny sink was very poor and the wait for warm water was long. When it finally arrived, it was intermittent.

The advertised "comfortable deck to sit on" was missing. We found two plastic lawn chairs on the ground to one side of the cement stairs leading to the cabin. The view from our "cabin" was a gas station. When we first checked in we could smell gas and the large trucks using the station were quite noisy. Fortunately the station was closed when we returned at bedtime.

The north rim of the Grand Canyon was some distance away. The drive there took 45 minutes but when we drove back that evening after sunset it took a lot longer, since there were so many deer on the road. We enjoyed seeing all the deer (the most we've ever seen!), but the long drive was tiring after our visit to the canyon.

We were very glad that we'd only booked one night and managed to keep our sense of humour about this disappointing accommodation.

We are sorry you were disappointed with your stay and hope you will give us the chance to make it up to you in the future. We know the cabins are old and hope to be able to replace them as soon as finances allow.

We woke up this morning to three deer outside of our room. This inn is in a remote area of Arizona at 8000 feet elevation, 40 miles outside of the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It has an ideal location for trekking and solitude . The inn is well appointed and clean. There is very poor Internet, which is both a plus and a minus.

Jacob Lake Inn is much better than it has to be. As far as i could see it was the only place (outside of the lodge inside the canyon) to stay. That's why we stayed there the night before a rim-to-rim hike. It was terrific. Very nice people and helpful. Since the road to the park didn't open for the season until the next morning, I had lots of questions before arriving. They did their best to answer those questions. . . Food was good, and the diner and restaurant area felt warm. I wish I could have just hung out there a little longer.

BEWARE Their business practice is to keep ALL your money even when unforeseen circumstance causes you to change plans. We have stayed there before when touring by motorcycle. We organized a 4 couple motorcycle tour this year and booked rooms. The day before our trip the weather forecast turned nasty and we had to cancel the bike trip. They were totally inflexible. When told we would take them off our list of places to stay for future tours they could care less. BEWARE once they have your money they will keep ALL of it....even though they didn't earn it.
