“dirty sheets”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

The sheets and mattress cover were dirty and had to be replaced. The window blind was not working. The tv remote was not working. 23 April, room 105.
However, the desk staff and the housekeeper were friendly and helpful.

Louise I am sorry. Dirty sheets are totally unacceptable and a staff member has been disciplined.
We are installing a notice to explain how the blinds work. A guest prior to your arrival may have damaged them not understanding them. It has been an issue - Sorry. The TV remotes are less than a year old but a battery probably died - a simple thing to fix but not always picked up quickly. I am glad the staff were helpful. We will use your feedback to improve.

Regards

I loved my stay at the Bannister. It reminds me of why I prefer small owner-run hotels to the bigger faceless chain hotels. The staff feel more like family than employees. Its like a boutique hotel, but really cheap. Compared to what other hotels in Johannesburg cost, this is fantastic value.

The space is well designed and quirky. My room was spacious, quiet and simple. The shower was fantastic and the room was really clean. I loved the huge comfortable bed with high quality cotton sheets.

I didnt try the restaurant, but spoke to a fellow traveler who said that the food was outstanding.

The history of this hotel is a history of transformation in South Africa and represents how the country is renewing itself under the democratic dispensation. Recently refurbished the hotel is wonderfully situated in the vibe Braamfontein area and is well located next to the University of Witwatersrand, the Joburg CBD and the more residential Hillbrow area. The rooms are excellently furnished, wifi works better than the Fairmont hotel in Zimbali, the new restaurant is fantastic and the neighbourhood bars rock. Of course, the price is excellent too. Don't expect wasted reception spaces with underemployed staff -- we were checked in by the security guard. Certainly worth a visit

Room Tip: The experience lies in not knowing or worrying about where the room is. This is an economy hotel ju...

We booked 1 night at the Bannister Hotel. The check-in of the street is a bit funny, as its not really a reception area, but only a table with computer and a smiling receptionist to help you. But we were quickly helped and offered our room key. Once we entered the lift and were on our level, we realised that the difference between the entrance and the rest of the hotel is quite different. The passages are funky, with interesting lighting.

The rooms are renovated and definitely have a modern fresh feel to it. Although there is no view, but at the price I was surprised as to what the rooms offered. We realised that 1 cushion wasn't enough and phoned reception to ask for additional cushions. It wasn't even 1 minute and there was a knock on our door with the additional cushions. The beds were really comfortable and we had a good night's rest, and we also loved the shower with the Hansgrohe fittings

We didn't spend much time in the room, as we were out most of the day in the city and Braamfontein area which is very vibey during the day and night.

We were pleasantly surprised with the hotel, and especially at the price that they ask for a night we'll definitely make use of the hotel again if we need to stay in Braamfontein area.

The only negative thing is that they don't have off-street parking for cars, so our car had to stay in the street the whole night. Nothing happened to it, but still...not quite nice

Room Tip: Ensure that you get a room that is away from the clubs on the street side. Just ask reception

Thanks so much for your review. We are nearly finished renovating the reception, come back and see the restaurant we have just completed! We hope to get parking later this year - that said - and this being Johannesburg - there has not being a guest car stolen since we opened a year ago. Security in our part of Braamfontein is good.

We stayed at Bannister for 2 nights, and from the pictures on tripadvisor and the website, I though that the whole hotel would have been renovated. However, this was not the case, and we stayed in a quite run-down double room for 290R. Maybe the rooms looked better on the lower floors, but we weren't lucky enough to get them. Also, the shower out there on the roof weren't really working so we could only get very hot water (which is a much bigger problem than showering with cold water, as I found out).
However, the location is very good as the Bannister Hotel is only a short walking distance away from Park Station, the Gautrain station and some stops of the city sightseeing bus, and the area around is very lively, with nice cafes and lots of places to eat out.
The ladies at the reception were also very helpful and friendly and made up for the not so pleasant room.

Hi. Thanks for your review. The room you stayed in is one of the much older - lower budget, off-suite rooms. I should start calling that floor by the earlier hotels name - Metro Hotel. I appologize that was not made clearer when you booked. Please come back and see how we have transformed the ground floor. I will give you a new room at the cheaper rate you paid.

I was staying for 5 nights at The Bannister in Jo'burg last week, for a business trip. The hotel is situated in Braamfontein, a nice area in the city, with a park at 5 minutes distance, near the theatre, the Wits Origins Centre and the Constitution Hill, and very close to the Gautrain Park station (that also comprises the railway station and many busses stations - Greyhound, Intercape, SA Roadlink etc - these busses are travelling on long/short distances, for example to Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town etc). Braamfontein is a student area, as many universities and colleges are situated there. You can start your tourist visit by the Hop on Hop off bus.

The hotel has new furniture and bathrooms, with flat screen tv, wi-fi and air conditioned. There are some old furniture rooms as well. The staff is very kind and helpful. The hotel does not have a restaurant or coffee/tea facilities in the room, but it has coffee/tea facilities in the lobby downstairs. It is close to a pub, so some rooms might be noisier than others, but on the other hand it's good to have the pub close when coming back home at night.

Prices are very ok compared to other prices in Europe.

If you need to have breakfast, then there's the Post nearby (2 minutes walk), a cafe with good breakfast and nice small interieur garden, good prices (approx. 4 EUR a breakfast) and nice atmosphere. Also, there's a small supermarket Pick'n Pay nearby (5 minutes walk), so you can get almost everything from there. On Saturdays there's the Neighbourgoods Market just across The Bannister, where you can find lots of good diverse food.

I would recommend The Bannister for young people/couples that are not very picky and who would like a place to stay in a rather central area of Jo'burg, with an easy access to trains, buses and the airport, where you can start your visits in Jo'burg easily.

We stayed at the Bannister Hotel in Mid-August at the End of a Trip. The Hotel is just fantastic, the rooms (we were in a Double Room on 2nd Floor) are exceptionally well designed, have the most comfortable bed and are simply the best value for money we came across in SA. The location is excellent as well, it's an easy walk from the station and an easy commute into the cbd. The whole area is brilliant, full of exciting new eateries and shops and not scary at all. As a benefit, we got too meet the owner, who is a really knowledgable person with a very positive attitude that even took us to a nice restaurant for our farewell dinner. Thanks a lot again, would definetly stay there again!
