I travel a lot and I have seen budget hotels bit this one is just one step above a cartel hangout!!

You get harassed by informal carguards (parking in The street is not the safe option and they have limited underground parking.)

Rooms does not smell fresh and you wonder what John was there for an hour booking with his Jane/Sue/Mary.

This is surely the last time I stay over here!!

Lesson learnt!! Should have told my p.a 'to check Tripadvisor before she booked here!

Why did I not check Tripadvisor first?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Their website is misleading!
It is the most horrible hotel in an unsafe and bad neighbourhood. There was noise all night long fron\m the streets. They have a "doorman" but Im not sure what his purpose is, he does not assist with luggage even though i was alone with a suitcase, handbag and laptop bag.
I requested a 2 pin plug i was told they do not have! No effort was made by the staff.
The hotel staff was unfriendly and unhelpful.

We had the unfortunate experience to stay at this hotel when we visited East London for a conference. Unfriendly staff, dirty carpets, hairdryers not working, dated decor, Wi-Fi advertised, but not free, terrible neighborhood.... I could go on, but it will be a waste of valuable time. Just make sure that you check in at another hotel.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

Checking into the King David Hotel on our three week trip with our group of 8 travelling through SA we were treated as a necessary nuisance by the security staff and uninterested reception guy. We were allowed to park the rental-car in a fenced off parking roof area at the side of the Hotel. The parking and unloading in front of the hotel was difficult as the security guard refused to remove the orange cone in front of the door for temporary unloading of bags, The fee for parking our vehicle was R 35 per night, The location of the King David opposite the liqour store and the poorly maintained area it is in doesnt allow for a peaceful sleep. Lots of streetnoise! On entrance inside the room the carpet smelled mouldy, it was dirty as well and there was clearly an evidence of smoking by previous guests. The area around the hotel is run down, unsafe and not fit to go out for a stroll around town. The staff at the bar and restaurant where on the other hand very friendly and helpfull. The diner buffet and breakfast served was simple but well prepared. The design of the hotel communual areas is cold and business like. Not a minute you would feel like staying another night even when on a business trip...

We had an early flight out of East London and my husband was concerned we might be held up by the road construction on the motorway, so we decided to spend the night before our flight closer to the airport. We should have heeded the advice of our hosts in Morgan Bay and just got out of bed very, very early. The King David looked pretty decent from the website and the price was right.

The area looked a bit shaky, but the hotel was close to shops and businesses. We had dropped off our car at the airport and taken a cab into town. We were "greeted" by a surly female security guard lounging outside the main door. There was an orange cone in the parking spot outside the hotel which she made no attempt to move and obviously didn't want the taxi driver to move it either. The friendly guys in reception made us feel more welcome, although efficiency obviously hadn't been covered in their training program. They couldn't find anywhere to change a couple of large bills/notes so that we had tip money, although one of their colleagues had no problem an hour or so later.

The room was on the third floor, reached by a lift that may have been one of the first installed in South Africa. We were told that "old people" really liked it. The room was pretty basic, but clean and adequate (almost) for one night. Reasonably comfortable bed and pillows, but it would have been nice to have either a fitted lower sheet or one that was larger than the mattress surface. Bedside lamps, tea and coffee making facilities and a television that had only South African channels (interesting). Bathroom was small and it took us a while to locate the shower head, which was stuck at ceiling level in the upper corner of the walls over the bath. But the water was hot and plentiful. Minimal toiletries.

My husband likes to check out the neighbourhood when we are in a new place, so will take a walk from the hotel, go a few blocks and maybe find a bar or coffee shop to see what and who is happening. He was back within three minutes this time, saying that he felt uncomfortable, uneasy and almost threatened with the looks he was getting from the locals. We didn't budge from the hotel after that.

We had two meals at the hotel, The first was a late buffet lunch and the second was dinner off the menu in the evening although the buffet was still available. Neither meal was memorable and the buffet option was expensive for what it was. Only one of the dining room staff was at all interested in us at lunch time, so we gave him a good tip. This made a big difference in the attention we received that evening. A popular South African activity seems to be attending conferences and eating as much as you can while at the hotel, so the dining room was very busy with buffet buffs. We were able to order a bottle of OK wine beforehand in the large, empty bar. A very full ice bucket was even provided.

We ordered a shuttle/cab to the airport for 7:00 am and it was a good thing we were awake early as it arrived at 6:30. The driver gave us time to finish teeth-cleaning etc. and then there was a long discussion about the fare. The hotel staff gave us one figure, the cab driver another (higher) one, and we ended up compromising for the same exorbitant price we had paid from the airport the day before.

Would I stay here again? No. Would I recommend this hotel? No. Would I prefer to get up at 3:00 a.m. rather than stay at this hotel? Yes.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel.
