Heard great things about it. Came to have dinner. Food very but on the expensive side. Very cosy bar and dinning area. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Overall very good experience. Would recommend the lamb shank

We live in Grahamstown and this is one of our favorites. Probably one of the lest known gems in Grahamstown. It is reminiscent of old style dining. The food is always good - fine wine list and not over priced. You will not be disappointed.

We have not been here for lunch for a while. We were the only patron's and the lunch menu was really uninspiring, our choice of venison pie was not available so we were offered the dinner menu. We both choose steak Diane. The large piece of fillet was cooked to perfection but my blue cheese sauce was bland and the promised risotto was not served. Mangement needs to seriously review what is on offer, it is a far cry from its former glory. I see the last review was July 2015.

Dear Lynandgra2014,
Thank you for your review.

I would like to advise that Norden's Restaurant at The Cockhouse is under new management and we are working very hard to get to our former glory.

Please do pay us a visit again when you have the chance.

Thanking you Chantal

If you want some fine dining and a special night out, or a treat during the festival, then do go here. This little gem is perhaps not in the best spot in town, but is of historic interest, beautifully restored and makes up for its position in character, refurbishment, food and service. From the moment I made the booking I felt that we would be in good hands.

If you are a risotto fan - choose nothing else but the fillet with risotto - sublime and the best we have EVER eaten. I chose carpenter (local linefish) with crushed potato mash - light, beautifully cooked that it was still moist. The fillet was cooked to perfection and exactly according to m partner's expectations. Dessert was a treat - crème brulee with vanilla pod, and chocolate torte with a very thin base and made from Lindt chocolate.

The staff were very attentive but not over bearing, engaged easily in conversation. they were very busy that night with a cast and crew from the USA that had performed during the festival - so well done to them for coping so well (unlike comments on other restaurants during the festival) which shows their professionalism.

We "retired" to the lounge and log fire to finish off the evening with a cognac and relax in the shabby-chic decorated drawing room.

We highly recommend this restaurant. We did not stay here (The Cock House) so cannot comment on the accommodation.

They do charge corkage if you should wish to take your own (however the wine list is extensive) and was R30 for a bottle of bubbles we took along. Overall, pricing of the meals is exceptionally good and we did not feel that the cost was out of sync with quality.

Note that the website menu and pricing may be a little out of date, but will give you a god indication of food and pricing.

Thank Wolery

Had dinner here two nights and each time enjoyed the fare...lamb shank that melts off the bone and steak Diane perfectly prepared...it's rather surprising given the hotel in which the restaurant is situated, however, it is good dinner food, not fancy but well-prepared and flavorful.
