“The prefect place to stay”
Reviewed 28 March 2013

Have stayed at HH on about 6 occasions when visiting SA from Wales. The b&b has four large rooms in a very old Georgian house. It is very much a family affair with friendly owners and staff. It is situated a few minutes walk from the centre of Grahamstown and although breakfast is included we have opted to walk into town and eat at Harricots and amazing little restaurant with some interesting items on the breakfast menu.

Other guests have tended to be parents visiting their sons or daughters either at the private schools or university in Grahamstown so a very quiet place.

Prices are very reasonable too. I tried the plunge pool on my last visit which was much needed as it was very warm.

Owner Andrew Maffessanti is truly the most honourable and exellent of hosts. While I was travelling from quite a distance to stay over at his B&B in Grahamstown, he did not find it bothersome to organise some dinner for me from a local Restaurant to be delivered after my arrival in order for me to take a bath, rest and have a wonderful meal in my appartment.

He realy went to lengths to make my stay very pleasant indeed!

Room Tip: The rooms are far more like appartments than just a Bed and Bathrooom. Very comfortable indeed! Do...

Situated on a quiet road on the outskirts of this small university town, Henri House is spotless, tidy and spacious.
As a group of three, we had a huge lounge with dining table, and a double bed. It led through to the second bedroom/kitchen (yes, I know that’s an odd combination) and off that was the bathroom. So you need to be comfortable with passing through one another’s rooms.
The kitchen was set up with breakfast for taking any time in the larger room: cereals, yoghurt, milk, breads, spreads, tea and coffee. A bowl of fresh fruit was on the dining table.
Two things to be aware of: from the kitchen area there were three steps up to the bed, another three to the bathroom on the other side. So be ready to navigate them in the dark if necessary. And the fridge was rather noisy even though new, so could disturb light sleepers.
That said, we slept soundly and had a leisurely breakfast just when it suited us with no pressure to fit in with the arrangements for the landlord or those in other rooms, which may offer more conventional layouts.
