“Packwood Country Estate”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

If ever there was a proverbial "home away from home", Packwood Country Estate richly deserves this title. My family and I (6 of us in total, including 4 teenage children) spent a wonderful holiday at Packwood House from late December 2013 to just after New Year. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome, with Ilse's lovely home cooked meal most enjoyable after a long day on the road. Vicky and her team went out of their way to make us feel at home throughout our stay and even the family dogs, Fred and Cody, visited us on a regular basis.

One of the reasons we booked at Packwood to start with was its rural setting, away from the December holiday crowds in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. This proved to be an excellent decision. From the sweeping views down over the valley and forests toward Robberg in the distance, to the sight of cows grazing in the meadows just below the house and the gentle summer breeze on most days due to its elevated position, Packwood is indeed a serene environment. Throw in the regular supply of fresh milk and cheese from Packwood's own dairy herd, the superb Packwood wines, the many outdoor recreational activities in close proximity and the well appointed, spacious accommodation (the house very comfortably accommodated the 6 of us), and one has a holiday hard to beat.

I can unreservedly recommend Packwood Estate to anyone wanting a break from city life. Given the opportunity, we will certainly return one day.

We stayed at Packwood Country Estate in early January 2014. We were welcomed by wonderful hospitality, including an authentic home cooked scrumptious meal on the house. The accomodation was great. A fully self contained 2 bedroom house with full DStv package (bonus!). The house is about 5km off the main road on a good quality sand road. This is rural Plett, with great access to the beach (25 mins) but away from the hustle and bustle of Plett over New Year. We loved our stay and would recommend this to anyone who has a family and does not want to be in the busy-ness of Plett. Another bonus is the delicious wine made right on the Estate.

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely stay at the Bottlebrush cottage at Packwood over December.

We enjoyed being out in the countryside and away from the chaos of Plet and Knysna over season (the area is super for mountain bikers, walkers and trail runners as it borders the indigenous forest).

Bottle brush cottage is perfect for 2 with a comfortable living area downstairs and a large loft bedroom upstairs with a huge private wooden deck for braai's and outdoor eating. There was a family staying in the large manor house next door to us but we didn't even hear them which was great.

We especially loved the delicious farm fresh milk and butter that was left by Ilse - as well as our welcome dinner of chicken salad, fresh baked bread and farm cheese. The Packwood Pinot bubbly is also one of the best we have tasted!

When we arrived there were also lovely bath products left for us to use (bubble bath, shower gel and body cream) which was a thoughtful and appreciated gesture.

Room Tip: Bottlebrush is perfect for a couple.

I must disagree with Anton H's review. We stayed in the family unit over three holidays seasons with our kids, now aged 8 and 12. We loved every minute!! Yes, the family unit is a chalet on a farm, but that is what we wanted - a rural setting, privacy and space around us. And the chalet is hardly small I must say. There are three large bedrooms and a very spacious open plan living/kitchen area. There are also smaller chalets on the farm for couples, as well as a very large house for bigger families.

Anyway, to get back to some of Anton's points, we didn't experience any problem with the linen or the beds. Our kids loved running up and down to the pool, and for us it wasn't a hassle either. 300m is hardly far! You definitely do not need a 4x4 to get to the back of the house!! We do not have a 4x4 and we never experienced any hassle getting in or out. Yes, there is a hedge that does hide the view when you sit down, but this hedge also offers privacy and wind protection. So it is a bit of a trade-off - if you opt for one, you lose the other .... And I must say we appreciated having someone cook for us on the day of our arrival. It gave us some time to unwind, explore our surroundings and not have the fuss of preparing a meal. The other days we opted to cook for ourselves though as it is, after all, a self-catering unit. I think they just offer the welcoming meal as a kind gesture to weary travellers ...

I guess it is all about expectations and what you want. If you want typical hotel-type 4 star accommodation with staff milling about and the swimming pool on your doorstep, then go for one those - there are plenty in the cities and towns. If you want truly unique country-style accommodation, with thousands of hectares of indigenous forest as your backyard, and rolling farm hills and vineyards towards the ocean as your front garden, then Packwood is definitely the place for you. You can go for endless hikes. You can mountain bike for miles. You can walk through rolling hills and vineyards down to the farm dams. You wake up to the sounds of birds chirping happily. You fall asleep to peace and quiet .....

R500 divided by a family of four is R125 per person. Do your research and see what you can find for that Anton - probably some dodgy motel on the side of the road. Packwood is a truly special and magical place that is worth every penny in my opinion. But again, it is all down to what you want out of your holiday and the things in life that are important to you. If you are a city type that doesn't appreciate the wonders of nature, then perhaps Packwood is not for you.

We stayed in the family unit for 7 days over Christmas. The first thing that strikes you when arriving is that the 4 star Country Estate that you booked is very far from the truth.
At the very best, this is a chalet on a farm with the bare minimum spent on it.
Things that irritated me were:
1) Fully serviced actually means weekdays excl public holidays. A problem over Christmas.
2) Sheets were only changed once when we requested a change.
3) All linen is thin, old and worn out.
4) Pool is at least 300m from the unit down a hill in front of the main house. By the time you've walked back up the hill you're hotter than when you decided to go for a swim in the first place.
5) You need a 4x4 to get to the back of the house.
6) The bathroom taps hardly reach the basin (very weird). Anyone under 2m tall has to stand in the bath or doorway to brush their teeth.
7) Although the chalet is built on a hill, when you sit on the patio chairs, your entire view hides behind a thick hedge.
8) If you book a meal, understand that that means someone coming to your kitchen to cook for you.
9) Before going to sleep every night, we had to put the slats back into the bed in the second bedroom.
10) Beds have rock hard foam mattresses which are hot in summer.

Unit does have full satellite TV, which is great except when the remote doesn't work properly.
This unit is a 2 star self catering unit at best and shouldn't cost more than R500 pd although we paid over R1300 pd.
Definately won't be back.

We live locally and were attracted by Packwood's cheese and wine lunch - we were not disappointed! Our host Cara was very friendly and hospitable. Lunch was a generous combination of homemade bread, farm cheeses and a magnificent salad. The estate's sauvignon blanc was a real gem and chilled to the perfect temperature on a warm winter day. We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, wonderful views and Cara's tales of life on the estate. A delicious treat.

Waking up to such a breathtaking view can not be replicated by any resort, this can only be experienced by staying on a working farm! This is where Packwood has made it unforgettable!

Located far enough out of town that there is constant peace and no noise from traffic or people walking past but, close enough that going out for supper or to get food from the shops to make a supper back at the cottage, isn't a mission. The best part is that you can book for a supper to be made by the lovely Ilsa, which is made out of the farm's produce!

Packwood has the dairy on the farm as well as all the Vineyards - the cheese and wine is to die for - but just outside the front gates you stumble onto the Fisanthoek/Harkerville hiking trails which can make a great day outing. There are loads of places to do mountain biking and not far from the estate are many other hiking trails to choose from! With a huge variety of tourist destinations within a 25km radius either direction of the farm it makes a perfect location! I cant wait to go back!
