“wasted potential”
Reviewed 6 November 2013

This place is nicely set up, it has a nice garden, social area, kitchen, braai area, tables to socialize...
it lacks nice bathrooms (this was one of very few places in SA where there was no soap or even a soap container in the bathroom, the question was how the staff cleans their hands? well, they don't, as I witnessed, also the bathrooms are worn, tinish and less than basic even for African standard).
The camping site is just a piece of grass, which is ok, but under the laundry strings does not make it nice.
Staff was there but was invisible for the guests and not very helpful. We wanted to check out before 8, but were told by a girl at the reception that she cannot take our payment as somebody else is coming at 8, we waited till quarter past, and she changed her mind... not saying that nobody else came.
Well this place has potential, but staff prefers to take care of themselves (eating braai with their friends or surfing on the internet, and those bathrooms...
Also we felt a bit strange reading on the fridge that you are in the camera, so be aware...
The distance to the beach is over 15 minutes walk.

Stayed at Albergo a few times. I always feel at home here. They have a bonfire going every night of the year so you can have a braai and hang out with other guests if you like or just relax in a hommock in the garden. Very central if you wanna go out for dinner or shopping. The hosts run a very neat and tidy establishment. Friendly helpful staff to check you in. Definitely one of the best Backpackers in South Africa i have stayed in.

A lovely hostel run by a Dutch couple who have clearly got the right attitude and vision to running a successful backpackers hostel. It was quiet when we were there - maybe because it was low-season - despite this, the staff made a point of lighting the bonfire and braii for just a few guests. The reception tried to help organise a fishing trip but due to low numbers this didn't occur. The gardens were immaculately kept and rooms were of a high standard. We wish the owners the best of luck for the future.

We were forced into a last minute change in our plans after Santini Lace Apartments cancelled our booking as we were leaving UK as they had double booked and the accommodation they arranged as a replacement, Twilight Cottage, (all in Plettenbergbaii), were not answering the gate or mobile when we arrived as planned.
We went to Albergo as our daughter, who is in South Africa for a year) has stayed previously. The staff were magnificent; so helpful and accommodating and free parking was available. We opted for a family room; a double bed with two bunks and en suite, which was a shower room. The room was clean and conservatively equipped, with an open wardrobe/shelving for clothes and no TV, but as we were using this as a base and not intending to “live” there during our stay, what more do you need. There was a communal brai, which is lit every night and you can bring your own meat or other foods to cook as and when you like. Ideally situated, close to restaurants and shopping precinct, this accommodation set us back 500ZAR for one night, which is about £38 for three adults. It is about ten minutes walk to the fabulous beach on foot, but the hill down to the beach is very steep and back is bordering on mountainous. Do not fail to consider backpacker accommodation or, based on this location, you’ll be missing a gem.

Room Tip: The staff will show you rooms before you book with no obligation.

Beware! Albergo has a habit of not returning room key deposits! A nice little trick to earn a few extra Rand. I asked them to post the money to me at different accommodation...it never arrived despite their word the money had been sent.
