We went to Katarina’s during Dec 2011 while on holiday.
We made our reservation 2 days prior to our lunch date, and the necessary details were taken and we were told that our reservation for 5 people with a table outside as requested was also confirmed.
On arrival at the restaurant, there was no booking for our party of 5 and while the waiters scurried around, no-one helped us to sort out our reservation, or lack there-of. No manager or receptionist was visible. A waiter said that we can use a 4-seater round table for the 5 of us, but we declined as it would be too small. Then other patrons who sat at a big table got up, and we were given the big table. This took nearly 15 minutes. The menu and wine list were given, and upon looking through the wine list we immediately realised that the wine list is extremely overpriced. It basically is more than any of the Top 10 restaurants in Cape Town, and other very good restaurants. This immediately also put us off from the establishment. The menu in hindsight is also extremely overpriced for the food that is produced.
Prior to our first course we ordered Bellini’s which was apparently a house speciality, but if we knew how long it would take, we would’ve left it. Our waitress came over and apologised 3 times for the delay, and even tried to make it herself, but 45 minutes later our drinks arrived, only after my father had to walk to the bar and ask where it was.
First course consisted of artichokes and chicken pies with salad. The pies were nice, albeit very small for R85. The salads were literally a few leaves of green lettuce with a dressing – and that was it. This all for R75 & R85 individually. 2 of our party found slugs and worms on the leaves of the salad, which was disgusting. After starters we opted to share 3 fishcake dishes for the next course, and were astonished to find out that the R95 fishcake dish consists of only 1 salmon fishcake and green leaves (again) with above-menteioned dressing. This also arrived only after 1 hour of waiting, and the waitress apologising profusely.
Over all, a completely overpriced establishment, that thinks it can ask any price it wants for any dish, and serve crap.
The only positives of this restaurant are the location, view and the nice décor outside, but that’s literally it. Everything else is pathetic.
