What a fabulous location! Kurland Polo Estate is truly beautiful and Katarina's could be so great. Sadly, despite the good selection of delicious buffet salads, meat, prawns etc., we were left underwhelmed. It's expensive and we would expect our first four wine choices (wines generally very expensive) to be available but sadly not - apparently due to today being their last day before closing for a few months. We had to ask, and wait, for proper cutlery which arrived and was sent back as dirty. The final straw was a thoroughly awful espresso. A superb afternoon of clear views and sunshine, on a lovely property but a restaurant resting on its laurels it seems.

that what should have been a lovely evening is spoilt by lack of attention to minor detail! As usual one can only be very impressed by the magnificent setting of this restaurant. However, even this is not enough to hold the evening together when one chooses a white wine on the wine list to be told this will have to be brought from the store and therefore it is not chilled. As usual the food, what was available on the menu, was good and tasty. The staff were also good and as helpful as possible. However the whole experience deteriorates completely when the till slip is brought for payment and this slip is totally illegible because the blue print is so feint that it would be a challenge reading it in broad daylight - let alone by candlelight at night. The fact that one is expected to part with the best part of R1 500,00 (for three two course dinners and wine) when one is presented with a till slip that would best suit a take-away, is very disappointing. N.B. I did go back the next morning and brought my feelings to the management's attention.

Katarina's Restaurant at the Kurland Hotel is the most magnificent venue in the Plettenberg Bay Area. It is set in the most beautiful polo estate in South Africa and the restaurant is very beautifully decorated and established in an old barn. The food we had was impeccable, the service fast and friendly and the whole ambiance was unbeatable. The attention to detail and care by Glenda Lederle, the head chef, was remarkable. I had the cold salmon and salad which was mouth-wateringly tasty and the others had the salmon fishcake and the calamari. All of us were really very impressed with the quality of the meal and the pure enjoyment of being in such a great venue. A definite for anybody visiting the area. 10 out of 10 !!!

The setting was idealic, Cape Dutch homestead and polo estate on a warm summer afternoon. We sat on the terrace overlooking the lands and mountains, hoping our lunch would match the surroundings. The food did not disappoint. The artichoke pie on the starter menu, which we ordered as a main, was plenty to eat. The steak tartare was excellent as was was the crumbed calamari and the T-bone. There were however some small issues which struck a discordant note. Our waitress was not well enough trained for an establishment of this stature. She was unable to advise us that the lack of sauce on the aubergines was due to a change in the menu and she seemed to have little training in serving wine. The food was also overpriced and the markup on the wines outrageous. No matter how good the wine, at R350-00 a bottle, the Springfield Life from Stone Sauvignon Blanc would have left a bitter taste in my mouth. Perhaps the prices were just seasonal, but whatever the case, I feel there is far better value available out there, even for this quality food.

Invited by good friends we enjoyed the wonderful food at the restaurant of Kurland. The restaurant is very cozy with fires burning, pretty lights, comfortable cushions and welcoming staff.
Kurland is about 20 km outside of Plettenberg Bay on the N2 and very easy to find. After entering through the gates I was amazed by the view of the mountains bordering the green polo fields. For a minute I thought I was in Switzerland!
We were welcomed with local champagne (Bramon) from the opposite of the N2 and we shared a couple of starters with our table. Highly recommend the tomato/mozzarella sales.
I had salmon for mains and exactly as my friend said it was not hot but cold, served with eggs/ sauce and salad, very yummy. My husband ordered a steak from the steak bar (also very good) and he enjoyed a huge piece of cake with caramel and chocolate sauce.
HIGHLY recommended, I had such a lovely evening! Am going back to Kurland with our children very soon.
