We enjoyed a very pleasant week end in this hotel. the location and views are stunning, overlooking the bay. The room was pleasant, clean and well laid out. After our safari this was a good place to chill out and relax. Although there is a lot to see in the area, we did very little. the food, both at dinner and breakfast, was excellant. The nearby restaurant called lemon Grass or Tree, was first class, one we thoroughly enjoyed. The town is a few minutes walk away, and there is direct access, for the fit,to the beach.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the pool/beach

We stayed in a B&B, but had dinner in the Sand Restaurant, located in the Plettenberg Hotel. The degustation menu - 6 courses with matching wines - around Euro 75 - what a bargain for the quality! We had a lovely trainee serving us the wine, unfortunately he had not been taught how to really describe the wine - but besides that, highly recommended!

After many years of looking at this hotel as a potential option we finally took the plunge and stayed two nights in January. I was travellling with kids ( ages 11 and 6) so needed inter connecting rooms and after a lot of e-mails was given an option which I later discovered was a very apartment type set ( KIng beds with lounge rooms) up, at an enormous cost of R6000 per night per room including breakfast. On querying the rate I was told this was the best option.

Besides the people and the location this hotel is still n the 1980's and is not worth US$750 per night at all when compared to other hotels at simlar rates world wide. which have this Relais Chateaux rating.

THe pool room which is their showccase shot is really an awful space and the pool at 35 degrees heated a terrible swim. Twice we had to request pool towels early in the morning and frankly it needs a lot of work to modernise this whole pool area.

The shower head in the rooms almost felt like bulletts hitting you becuase the shower head is old and poorly set up. We were placed on ground floor with 8 doors and windows all of which we kept closed becuase we were concerned about the security with anyone able to access the rooms from the street. Although there was a guard at the main hotel this gave us little comfort and security is a concern in SA especially with the closest township only 1 km away.

THe breakfast selection on buffett is neither great in choice or variety and is a very standard offer, so unless you order off set menu, its dissapoints. SA has such great breads, jams...etc it would seem sloppy at a hotel at this rate to offer a standard buffett. The breakfsat room besdies the outdoor settings also very average 1980's set up.

Room Tip: Choose anything above ground if you need fresh air and are worried about the securit aspect.

Thank you for your comments which we are working on. We take security very seriously and alongside the 3 twenty four hour security guards stationed at strategic points on the property, we also have 24 hour vehicle security patrol. We trust that you will return to The Plettenberg in the future. Lisa Knight

We stayed for one night in december and I only wish we could have stayed for longer! The views are even better than can be captured in photos and the whole hotel has a lovely, calm, welcoming atmosphere.Johan, the assistant manager was simply superb in his manner with us and is clearly a consummate professional. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and we were lucky enough to try the cocktails in the bar before dinner. They were seriously good - the best we've had in a very long time. The restaurant food was nice but nothing special, a little bit heavy for my liking but perhaps that is just me. The restaurant itself is beautiful and a pleasure to dine in. If I had to find something to complain about it would be that our room smelled faintly of smoke when we arrived but with so much else to be happy about we really weren't bothered. All in all it was a fantastic stay and I would happily recommend this hotel.

My wife and I had our honeymoon in South Africa, and were looking forward to our one night stay in the Plettenberg Hotel as it had come highly recommended. We had a noisy room overlooking the entrance and parking and the service was always short. We've had the privilege of staying in some lovely hotels during our stay in SA, unfortunately, the Plettenberg Hotel was not one of them. Not worth the hype, or the money.

Brilliant views, excellent service, lovely rooms and tempting cocktail list at the stylish bar.

The restaurant is great and service is attentive - the food is probably a little too heavy/rich to want to eat here more than once but is excellent nonetheless.

Room Tip: Ocean facing is the way to go

The gracious art of living reaches new heights at ‘The Plettenberg’: a Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel in Plettenberg Bay – one of South Africa’s most exciting, dream destinations. Nestling on the stunning coastline of the Western Cape’s Garden Route – between the lush, green of the sub-tropical Tsitsikamma forests and the sparkling waters of beautiful Formosa Bay – an elegant, long white mansion stands waiting to offer an unforgettable stay, fine-dining or the afternoon tea experience.

If you have a penchant for taking tea the elegant way, there is nothing better than at The Bay. Relax in one of the attractive lounges or poolside on the al-fresco terrace and enjoy an atmosphere of soothing sophisticatio; make your choice from a superior selection of the finest teas; and enjoy impeccable service while indulging in delicious tea-time treats. Personal favourites include: classic smoked salmon and crispy bacon sandwiches, followed by rich chocolate gateau, mouth-watering carrot cake or homemade muffins topped with organic preserves. All this – and a ‘table with a view’, too. Not to be missed.Only problem is tht after your feast - you will have no space for dinner and probably no appetite for rambling on the magnificent beaches. Recommended by Daphne Beames.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the bay
