We stayed in the Plettenberg at the midpoint of our road trip through the winelands and the garden route, and it turned out to be one of the highpoints of the holiday. The Plettenberg is situated in two separate blocks on either side of the road at the bottom of a steep hill, overlooking the beach and the Indian Ocean. The staff at reception were very helpful, polite and efficient and we were quickly booked in and escorted to our suite on the other side of the road, and our bags followed us equally quickly. The room was gorgeous - at the entrance was a really nice sitting room with chairs and table and a corner unit with TV and DVD in it, and the windows gave a 180 degree view out over the beach. There was a complimentary bottle of red wine to welcome us. The bedroom was off of the sitting room and was nice and big with a comfortable bed and more great views out over the beach and the ocean. The bathroom was very opulent with all the facilities and mod cons you would expect of a hotel this standard. The climb back up the hill can be hard work but it's worth it to get to the myriad of restaurants and shops up on the main street, and we felt perfectly safe walking there and back after dark. The restaurant was excellent and we had a superb meal there on the second night of our stay, and everybody should have at least one cocktail from the bar in the main part of the hotel, sadly I can't remember the barmans name but he was a very genial man who mixes a wicked cocktail and who is full of useful information about the surrounding area. Talking of the surrounding area, there is so much to see and do around Plettenberg Bay it's hard to fit it all in. We went whale watching which was wonderful, and also drove out to a nearby monkey sanctuary, bird park and the Tsitsikamma park. If you don't do anything else you must have a go at the forest canopy tour which goes through the Tsitskamma forest canopy on zip wires - amazing! All in all it's hard to fault the Plettenberg or the surrounding area - top marks!
