We stayed in the Plettenberg at the midpoint of our road trip through the winelands and the garden route, and it turned out to be one of the highpoints of the holiday. The Plettenberg is situated in two separate blocks on either side of the road at the bottom of a steep hill, overlooking the beach and the Indian Ocean. The staff at reception were very helpful, polite and efficient and we were quickly booked in and escorted to our suite on the other side of the road, and our bags followed us equally quickly. The room was gorgeous - at the entrance was a really nice sitting room with chairs and table and a corner unit with TV and DVD in it, and the windows gave a 180 degree view out over the beach. There was a complimentary bottle of red wine to welcome us. The bedroom was off of the sitting room and was nice and big with a comfortable bed and more great views out over the beach and the ocean. The bathroom was very opulent with all the facilities and mod cons you would expect of a hotel this standard. The climb back up the hill can be hard work but it's worth it to get to the myriad of restaurants and shops up on the main street, and we felt perfectly safe walking there and back after dark. The restaurant was excellent and we had a superb meal there on the second night of our stay, and everybody should have at least one cocktail from the bar in the main part of the hotel, sadly I can't remember the barmans name but he was a very genial man who mixes a wicked cocktail and who is full of useful information about the surrounding area. Talking of the surrounding area, there is so much to see and do around Plettenberg Bay it's hard to fit it all in. We went whale watching which was wonderful, and also drove out to a nearby monkey sanctuary, bird park and the Tsitsikamma park. If you don't do anything else you must have a go at the forest canopy tour which goes through the Tsitskamma forest canopy on zip wires - amazing! All in all it's hard to fault the Plettenberg or the surrounding area - top marks!

We stayed at the Plettenberg after a disappointing 3 nights at the Lanzerac in Stellenbosch. What a delight ! We had an executive suite for 3 nights which overlooked the bay and pool.

The whole experience was fantastic and the restaurant fully deserves its Relais et Château award.

The only thing I will say is that Plettenberg itself is not that attractive. Unfortunately heavy storms have destroyed the bay and most of the beach has been washed away. But (and called me a heathen if you like) on the whole this is indicative of the whole Garden Route which I think is much over-hyped. The Lake District is much nicer – although we have much worse weather…..

Nevertheless, the staff at the Plettenberg more than make up for this with professional service and great attitude. I would definitely stay again if I was in the area.

Stayed in the private beach house of the Plettenburg. I would highly recommend it. Beautiful rooms, private pool overlooking the bay, great service where you can eat your meals on your own deck overlooking the bay, and the Bellini's in the bar (made with fresh peaches) are stunning.

We were planning just three nights at the Plettenberg but due to bad weather, i.e. roads closed due to heavy rain and mud slides we had to stay an extra night. The staff could not have been more helpful and enthusuatic about helping us. We found the hotel's pair of resident black cats a charming feature of this friendly hotel. An excellent breakfast on the terrance - when weather allowed - gave us a stunning view of the bay.

As part of our recent trip to South Africa we stayed for three days at the Plettenberg. We had booked and paid for a standard room and requested an upgrade to a sea view room if one was available. This request was granted at no extra cost. On arrival we were greeted by both the assistant manger and the manager and were advised that we had been given a further upgrade to a premiere suite. The welcome could not have been more friendly and we were absolutely delighted with the suite which had wonderful views over the ocean and we watched whales and dolphins from our large and comfortable bed! The room was also provided with fresh flowers, fruit, wine, mineral water and chocolates. The standard of design, fittings, furniture and decoration is outstanding in all parts of the hotel, the bedrooms are beautifully furnished and lit, the bathrooms immaculate, housekeeping is flawless and the nightly turndown service includes a hot water bottle in your bed if you are feeling the chill of the South African winter! We found the breakfasts to be excellent with a generous cold buffet and a varied a la carte hot selection, you could enjoy a different hot breakfast for every day of a week! We only dined in the Sands restaurant once as we wanted to try some local restaurants and dinner was again very good with a comprehensive wine list to suit every pocket. We never felt security to be an issue and walked to the town centre from the hotel on several occassions. On the last day we asked to delay our checkout as the weather was the best of our stay and we were told to stay just as long as we wanted to use the room and facilities. You would have to be extremely difficult not to enjoy this gem of an hotel. The staff are exceptionally pleasant and can not do enough to make your stay enjoyable, if only all hotels were run like the Plettenberg.

After staying at the Plettenberg’s wonderful sister hotel in Hermanus (The Marine) we were most disappointed with our stay in this hotel and could not recommend it to any other travellers. Indeed, given the arguments about additional charges taken from our credit card over 3 months after our stay, we would have to recommend that you don’t stay there!

Getting to the hotel involved in our case a 9 hour drive through long-tern roadworks and on arrival we were curtly informed that our reservation had not been confirmed, even though we held a valid booking reference from the hotel group’s central reservation office. The hotel could or would not provide the accommodation we had booked and, as we did not want to change rooms during our stay, we cut short our visit.

Our dining experiences in the hotel were very poor. On arrival at breakfast we found that it necessary to book tables in advance, and the quality and range of the food on offer was mediocre. Service was very slow, and our special Valentine’s night dinner took over 4 hours! Despite the best efforts of our travel agent (American Express) the hotel’s management has refused to make any recompense for our poor experiences.

The environs of the hotel are not recommended safe for walking and, all in all, we felt very cut off. We were glad to escape and return to another excellent hotel, the Cape Grace in Cape Town.

We visited The Plettenberg Hotel for 3 nights and we have never received such fantastic service by ALL the staff throughout our visit. We were welcomed by all the Managers and we were made so welcome throughout our stay.

Because the Hotel was virtually empty we were given a free upgrade to a Suite which we later learned would normally cost over £700 a night in Season!!

This is a 5 star+ luxury Hotel and we had a fantastic room and from our balcony we could see the Beach and Ocean right in front of us. The whole Hotel overlooks the Ocean and sitting out for breakfast was a treat. What more could we ask for!

The room had a separate suite very tastefully appointed throughout and the bathroom was spacious. We even had a walk in Cupboard

We would highly recommend that anyone who stays in Plettenberg stays at this Hotel

Incidentally because we went in the South African 'winter' all the Hotels we stayed at were virtually empty and at so the service we received throughout the Eastern Cape was out of this world

The weather was sunny (only 2 hours rain all holiday) and the excellent roads totally clear. We will be recommending South Africa to all our friends!
