spent 2 nights at the plettenberg...we had an excellent room with a great view....in fact we viewed a school of 6 whales bobbing up & down from our room. The room was decorated very tastefully ,the food was excellent...& the location awesome. Even the toileteries were of a very high quality....loved the place....

My partner and I recently returned from our wedding/honeymoon trip in Southern Africa, where we stayed 4 nights at the Dock House in Cape Town, 3 nights at La Residence in Franschhoek, 3 nights at the Plett, 5 nights at Singita Boulders, 2 nights at the Saxon in Johannesburg, and 5 nights at Azura on Benguerra Island, Mozambique. As nice as the Plett is, it was the most underwhelming property of all that we visited.

We originally had planned to book a Deluxe Suite for our 3 nights. We ended up winning an auction where we paid little more than half of what that would have cost to stay in the Lookout Villa for 5 nights. We were only able to stay for 3 nights, but we were very excited to see what the Lookout Villa entailed.

The Lookout Villa is basically 2 beach houses next to the main hotel property that the hotel purchased (and includes the Spa facilities and another Villa). We stayed in what we considered the nicer Villa, though we did tour the other Villa and the rest of the hotel property with the general manager during our stay. In our opinion, the Villas were just OK beach houses with OK furnishings and decor--but nothing special, unless you consider having 3 bedrooms special. The layouts were just OK. They were spacious--ours particularly so--but we were very glad that we hadn't paid for the stay.

We did enjoy the sense of privacy of being in our own house, of course, which is why we never did transfer to the original Deluxe Suite (which the general manager kindly had reserved for us in case we preferred that over the Villa). She had reserved the best Deluxe Suite in the hotel for us, and it did have spectacular views. But it was also a bit smaller than the other deluxe suites, so we decided to stay in the Villa since ocean view is not something we crave--living in Newport Beach, CA, with our own spectacular ocean view!

However, the privacy was often interrupted by security guards walking around our house but inside our perimeter wall. Talk about disconcerting to be sitting semi-naked on your pool deck when a security guard pops around the corner and looks up and sees you! Not very private. We were very troubled by that. Also, we learned that just days before, a woman had been murdered literally around the corner from our Villa, literally just a block away, which probably explained the security but didn't inspire peace and relaxation!

Had we stayed in the hotel, we determined that we would have been similarly underwhelmed. The design and decor for the suites was minimal and serene, but not overly impressive. The views out to Plettenberg Bay really varied wildly--when they were great, the room was usually smaller, and when the views were blocked or not available, the rooms were usually much more spacious--a weird arrangement to us based upon the rates charged and compared to other seaside properties, at least.

Service at the hotel was, for the most part, very good. We had some really annoying issues with internet, and it appeared that at least partially those were because of nationwide system upgrades. But the wireless functionality in the Villas, which are advertised as having wireless, was often problematic, too--and that had nothing to do with internet connectivity. Getting a fix was a trial, and that soured us a little, too. We like to look online for news, check Facebook, update everyone on our honeymoon, so for us it was an issue. For others who don't care or need internet, not a problem, I'm sure.

The restaurant, Sand, however, was the standout. We LOVED it. I would return to Plettenberg just for the chance to eat at Sand. I loved it more than La Colombe in Cape Town. The food was outstanding, and the service was just as good. Breakfast, lunch, dinner--all were exceptional. Absolutely, dining at Sand made our stay memorable.

I will also say that we must have missed the right time of year to be on the Garden Route, because we were both underwhelmed. We drove for an hour or so along the Route and kept wondering when the really spectacular scenery would begin. It never really did, though there were hints here and there. Our highlight was my doing the Bloukrans Bridge bungy jump--twice. Otherwise, we probably won't bother returning to either the Plett or the area.

In short, we felt that for the rates charged, the Plett fell a little short of impressive. It's a nice hotel, but it lacked "punch" for us. The restaurant, Sand, however, gave us many memorable meals of incredible quality and service. Still, in the end, we would prefer to try out the Birkenhead House in Hermanus or another coastal property rather than return to the Plett.

This is one of the best small/medium- sized hotels we have stayed in anywhere. The staff are delightful, service excellent and there is some seriously good food coming out of the kitchen, from the perfect fried eggs and bacon through to proper fine dining in the evening. We stayed 4 nights and ate in for 3 of them (wished we'd eaten in for the 4th as well). The situation is stunning and watching the dolphins and the surfers from the terrace beside the small infinity pool, looking across Plettenberg Bay towards the mountains, was magical. All the furnishings are to a high standard and there are loads of small classy touches.

We were quite excited to stay at The Plettenburg as we had received several recommendations from friends both in the UK and in South Africa but unfortunately our experience of this hotel was very mediocre.
It may have been the heat wave and forest fires they were experiencing in the area that made the staff not up to the usual Relais Chateaux standard but we felt that we received a slightly laid back service, particularly in the evening in Sands Restaurant for dinner and again for breakfast the next morning. We sat and had drinks outside before dinner at about 8pm, it was dark and there was no lighting on the tables or around the seating area, just before we went inside to dine they lit a couple of candles on the tables, it really had no atmosphere at all. I was offered coffee from a pot during breakfast but when I asked for a cappuccino instead the waitress tutted, walked away and returned a few minutes later with the coffee which she set down at the end of the table.
The pool area was looking very tired also, very little space to sit and the loungers were old and dirty as was the tiles around the pool, the views however from the hotel are spectacular and stretch for miles along the coastline.
I will unfortunately be missing this hotel off our itinerary on our next visit to South Africa as I felt it was completely overrated.

We just stayed at the hotel for 1 night when driving the garden route from Capetown to Port Elizabeth. And after many negative feedbacks in this site we were a little bit scared about our stay. But finally we experienced a well managed hotel where staff members are taking care of their guests and needs. Even the general manager appeared during check-out and asked how our stay has been.

Despite the age of the building/ hotel our both rooms had been in top condition. The bath rooms offered highest level of comfort including floor heating and great amenities. The rooms themselves are decorated in old english interior with maritime touch. Nice touches like fresh flowers and give aways during turn down service brought the service on a personal level.

Food as the restaurant has been acceptable whereas breakfast has been very good. Only the selection on the buffet could have been a little bit better. However served dishes like eggs have been with our Top3 worldwide.

Only be careful in regards to the hotel buildings. The hotel consists out of 2 houses with a street between them. We stayed at the main building where the reception, restaurant etc is located. Not sure about the quality of the second building even the pool there is much nicer than the one in the main building.

By the way, the hotel employed security for the parking in front. Therefore they charge you for the public parking space a designated fee.

On arrival we were surprised to see boxes on McCain's Oven Ready Chips being delivered, and the entrance carpet to the drawing room to the left of the Reception area was stained and dirty....these were not encouraging signs to our arrival at a multi star internationally renown hotel offering a "a truly idyllic and indulgent experience" whose room rates at this high season time were c. £500+ per night. Our (first) room with a sea view, required that we overlook(ed) the car park, immediately in front of us !! Bedding was inferior, pillows were sponge filled. Poolside loungers were tatty, service was erratic...but there were plenty of towels ! Food quality at breakfast was average at best, at dinner (we only stayed in for one) was poor (sole smaller than on my shoes) but the lunch menu was good...they could not be rewarded on consistency, therefore. [Locally, the hotel's repuation for food is poor, we discovered]

Upside...the deputy manager, Justin Mitchell, played a blinder, and did all he could to satisfy our expectations, and the dining room and terrace team of wait staff were terrific.

Frankly...the Relais & Chateau team should give The Plettenberg a 'wake up call' and drop them....they devalue the R&C affiliation/brand.This is a tired hotel and in need of an overhaul.
