After staying at the Plettenberg’s wonderful sister hotel in Hermanus (The Marine) we were most disappointed with our stay in this hotel and could not recommend it to any other travellers. Indeed, given the arguments about additional charges taken from our credit card over 3 months after our stay, we would have to recommend that you don’t stay there!

Getting to the hotel involved in our case a 9 hour drive through long-tern roadworks and on arrival we were curtly informed that our reservation had not been confirmed, even though we held a valid booking reference from the hotel group’s central reservation office. The hotel could or would not provide the accommodation we had booked and, as we did not want to change rooms during our stay, we cut short our visit.

Our dining experiences in the hotel were very poor. On arrival at breakfast we found that it necessary to book tables in advance, and the quality and range of the food on offer was mediocre. Service was very slow, and our special Valentine’s night dinner took over 4 hours! Despite the best efforts of our travel agent (American Express) the hotel’s management has refused to make any recompense for our poor experiences.

The environs of the hotel are not recommended safe for walking and, all in all, we felt very cut off. We were glad to escape and return to another excellent hotel, the Cape Grace in Cape Town.

We visited The Plettenberg Hotel for 3 nights and we have never received such fantastic service by ALL the staff throughout our visit. We were welcomed by all the Managers and we were made so welcome throughout our stay.

Because the Hotel was virtually empty we were given a free upgrade to a Suite which we later learned would normally cost over £700 a night in Season!!

This is a 5 star+ luxury Hotel and we had a fantastic room and from our balcony we could see the Beach and Ocean right in front of us. The whole Hotel overlooks the Ocean and sitting out for breakfast was a treat. What more could we ask for!

The room had a separate suite very tastefully appointed throughout and the bathroom was spacious. We even had a walk in Cupboard

We would highly recommend that anyone who stays in Plettenberg stays at this Hotel

Incidentally because we went in the South African 'winter' all the Hotels we stayed at were virtually empty and at so the service we received throughout the Eastern Cape was out of this world

The weather was sunny (only 2 hours rain all holiday) and the excellent roads totally clear. We will be recommending South Africa to all our friends!

We stayed for 2 nights early January 2007 and enjoyed every moment. We found the staff very professional and friendly, the room was light, well decorated and very comfortable, the bathroom was a good size and modern. The quality of the food, wine and service in the restaurant was very acceptable. The hotel is not cheap, but in our opinion, worth every rand

My wife and I just finished a 3 day stay at The Plettenberg, at the end of the Garden Route in South Africa's Western Cape. We have nothing but superlatives for the hotel and staff. It is a wonderful place to spend a restful and romantic holiday.

The hotel itself looks and feels new. Fresh paint, smooth dark woods, beautiful furnishings. Our room, a luxury double with a seaside view, was magnificent. There is a lounge area, complete with couch, table and chairs, TV with DVD player, cabinets and closets. The bedroom was fitted with a queen-size bed, plenty of closets and mirrors, TV, etc. Both rooms overlook Plettenberg Bay, and our lounge had a small balcony with just enough space for the two of us to sit and watch the surfers compete for wave space with dolphins and seals. Both rooms have a hint of nautical theme (blue and white colors prevail), but done very tastefully.

The bathroom has a separate bath and shower, double sinks, heated towel rack and a skylight to let in the sun in the morning. The shampoos, lotions and other products provided were of the finest quality. Our room was in the smaller wing of the hotel- there are two buildings, separated by a small parking lot. The larger building has the reception desk, restaurant, bar business center, etc. The smaller building is primarily guest rooms, although there is a room used for serving breakfast, lunch and tea. We preferred the quieter wing.

Service at the hotel was beyond great. Staff were courteous, competent and knowledgeable. One staffer seemed to be solely responsible for helping us plan our daily activities. The management knew we were on our honeymoon, and when we arrived we were provided with champagne, fresh fruit, and rose petals and chocolates on the bed. The fruit, it should be noted, was replenished daily. Anything we needed was provided to us almost before we could ask for it. The only concern- there were security guards on call 24 hours a day in the parking lot. The hotel is located not far from a township, where crime rate is apparently high. While we were pleased that the hotel provided protection at all times, we wish it wasn't necessary. And I should point out that no matter where one chooses to stay in South Africa, this same situation will exist- it is not by any means exclusive to Plettenberg Bay.

The restaurant at the hotel, called The Sands, is excellent. "Neat and casual" is the attire of choice, although the restaurant itself has a slightly more formal feel to it. The food was excellent and the staff was attentive... although a few servers seemed to be a tad inexperienced and unsure of their English skills. We're sure they will improve over time. Outside the restaurant is a large deck overlooking the bay- great for evening drinks away from the "bustle" of the bar.

The town itself is cozy and quaint, with a far less touristy feel than other towns on the Garden Route (i.e. Knysna and Hermanus, which came very close to falling into the "tourist trap" category). There are some excellent restaurants and coffee shops, and water activities abound. But this is NOT a place to go if you are looking for nightlife and neverending excitement. The town is dark at night, and I do mean DARK- the roads are narrow and poorly lit, and it was actually difficult to navigate them.

All in all, the Plettenberg turned out to be a perfect choice for us to spend a portion of our honeymoon. Natural beauty, near-psychic staff, spacious and opulent rooms... we could not have asked for more.
