Plettenberg Bay has its own little micro climate, the weather is wonderful anytime you go there. To my mind the swimming is the best i have ever experience- i have visited beaches and swum in the seas from South India, to Vietnam,to Northern Sicily, but Plettenberg Bay is the BEST IN THE WORLD-the warm clear sky, the long beaches for walking,120,000year cave/middens to explore, pods of Dolphins swim past the hotel from time to time, fresh fish daily at most restaurants in the charming village. Beacon Isle Hotel can offer a wonderful holiday, entertainment, views from every room - brilliant attentive staff- just a marvellous place.....

Room Tip: choose a room with a sea and beach view not a back facing the village view

Stayed for 2 nights- last minute booking - room , pool, lounging area, hotel is still incredible after all these years ( last visited in 1977 !!) Only issue was the mouldy smell when walking down the stairs - I guess unavoidable because of the location - otherwise superlative hotel.

This was our first trip to South Africa. We booked a week at Plerrenburg for our second week after a week of touring. Couldn't have worked out better as the Beacon Island resort gave us a wonderful restful week.
The room was good with a lovely view. The food excellent with a good choice at reasonable prices. The waiting staff was outstanding - breakfast, throughout the day and evening meal.
In fact the staff generally were outstanding and made feel exceptionally welcome. As I said it was our first visit and did not quite know what to expect of this post-aparthied society, but the staff could not have put us at ease any further.
We didn't make use of the pool and didn't join in with the on-site activities, but it was evident that they were appreciated by many of the guests. One feature of our stay was meeting so many people who have been returning year after year - they obviously know when they're on to a good thing.
Nearby Knysna Elephant Park was good trip which we enjoyed.
We also went to the Plettenberg Bay Game reserve. We were fortunate in not going at a really busy time. The guide was really helpful and the two hour game drive enabled us to see all the animals that were on offer.
I had a game of golf at the Goose Valley club. Though still a novice, they were again very welcoming. It is a lovely course, challenging in places and interesting throughout.
The lifeguard patrolled beaches on either side of the hotel made an occasional change from lying on the loungers on the lawns watching the waves crash against the rocks.
All in all a great week, enhanced by the comfort provided by the hotel.
If you do go. Please find Lindy and say hello from his English friend.

we just had one night, and unfortunately the hotel was fully booked, so we weren´t able to expand our stay - but the staff was very helpful with trying to help us with expanding our stay, in the end it did´nt work out. anyway, even the one night was perfect. a good night sleep, very nice rooms, beautiful views from the balcony, breakfast was excellent, the pool area is very nice, nothing to complain at all here.

40 years ago we were at the new Beacon Isle Hotel. It was one of Africa's best hotels. We danced every night to the music of lovely bands, the service was excellent and we could party all night long. It was a place to be seen! Now, 40 years later we re-visit to commemorate our 40th anniversary. The hotel has changed into an old age home and also a children's cresch at the same time. There are signs that the building is suffering from years of see onslaught, which is normal. We were surprised to find that the hotel has become a sort of bed and breakfast accommodation. After 21:00 there was absolute silence in the hotel. There is no night club (we are 63!) where one can spend a happy evening with friends and dance. In the ladies bar Children were noisy and were climbing OVER the bar counter! Two singers were trying to be heard, playing for the three or four couples but could not be heard. The decor in the ladies bar is cold and uninviting. The food is generally good and the service is also good, the room was clean. We enjoyed our stay, but it will probably be the last time we visit the Beacon.

Room Tip: Rooms on any side would be OK.

The Beacon Island Hotel is prominently situated on a rocky beach-head overlooking the Indian Ocean. One outstanding feature is the lounge, which offers panoramic views over the sea where the whales and dolphins go about their lives in full spectacular glory. It really is an amazing and spellbinding sight, children absolutely love it...!!!! (The whale season is best from July to January). The hotel also offers a wide range of entertainment and activities for children and adults alike. South Africa is currently popular due to the advantageous exchange rates against the British £, the Euro, and the US $. The hotel has around 200 guest rooms, including suites with stunning sea views, you can even take a shower overlooking the Ocean...!! The rooms are generally well appointed and presented in a fresh, modern style. The Indoor Pool seems somewhat unheated rather than 'heated' as advertised. I tried to make an on-line booking over the Hotel Web-Site, but alas in vain, (at the time of writing) the system simply does not work, thus I first of all had to make a costly international call to request availabilty, then the process of emailing began to finally confirm dates, room type, prices etc. In this respect the Tsogo Sun Group could do better..!! Eating at the Beacon Island can be a haphazard affair, the courteous and dilligent staff are sometimes quite overstreched when demand is high. Worth it to see the Sea-Life activity...!!!
