My wife and I have just returned from the Beacon Isle (BI as the Joburgers call it).

It has the best position in Plet situated right on the coast in between a lagoon and the sea. You can walk out of the hotel straight onto the beach.

All the hotel public areas are newly renovated. The rooms are not great, but you are not going to be staying in your room much. Try avoid floor #1 as it is very hot for some reason. We stayed in room #506 which had brilliant views.

The main thing about this hotel is that it is very social. You always leave the hotel having met new people and having made friends for life. The outside area is great, with a massive grass lawn with pool. If you prefer the beach, the hotel has a small private beach adjacent to the outdoor lawn.

Very centrally located, there is a SPAR close by where u can buy food or a wide choice of restaurants in and around the hotel in Plet. For fitness fanatics, the hotel has a brand-new gym or for people who run (like me), you can run along the beach. I used to run each day and it was fantastic.

We booked via the time-share sales office in the hotel and got a brilliant rate of R1250 per night (about US$125). Peak season is more.

The BI is a great place to have a break and to explore the Garden Route.

We were traveling the Garden Route on the N2 going towards Capetown and decided to spend the night in Plettenberg Bay. While driving towards the beach we saw the Beacon Island Hotel and went to see if they had any rooms available. They did have a room available with a wonderful view for over $200 a night (including breakfast) which is expensive for South Africa. The hotel is really a resort with pools, hot tub, gym, restaurants, bars, etc. After our bags were brought to our room, we decided to go for a beach walk. There is a lovely long white sand beach next to the hotel. The only thing we needed changed in the room was to change the bed from two single beds to a queen bed. The front desk said they would change the beds while we were on our beach walk. We were warned about making sure you put your valuables in the hotel safe where ever you go in South Africa, which we have been doing. But this time I forgot to put my cell phone in the safe. The cell phone was in a secret pocket in my bag. It turned out my cell phone was stolen by the hotel staff. What was upsetting about my cell phone being stolen was the staff had to be going through our bags in order to find it. They also stole my extra camera battery. After reporting the stolen items to the manager of the hotel, they apologized and took a statement from me and said they would investigate the theft. We knew nothing was going to be done about the stolen items. The hotel did help me call the USA to cancel my cell phone service. Beside the theft, we did enjoy the beautiful Plettenberg Bay beach, we had dinner at Moby's Dick which is on the beach,. There was a full moon rising that evening too, breath taking. The fresh fish was delicious. You can walk to the restaurant from the hotel. The hotel location is perfect, but for the price, it may not be worth staying there for more than one night and watch your belongings.

We went to this hotel on honeymoon off-peak, soon after it was revamped. The guests are generally a bit older, although there were some families and younger people, and we didn't have a problem with them.

It's a self-catering timeshare resort, but the Island Diner restaurants in the hotel are very good, and you can always pop off to the nearby Spar for provisions, which is what my wife and I did.

Plett is well situated for exploring the Garden Route, and the hotel itself is magnificently situated. The indoor pool and entertainment area are a bit disappointing, but we were using the hotel as a base to explore the Garden Route. If you are younger you probably would get bored if you stayed on resort all time, but it has the basics (pool, DSTV, etc) to keep one entertained.

My husband and I were the youngest people here by about 40 years! The hotel appears to be exactly as it must have been in the 70's or 80's, and it is quite basic. Rooms do not have airconditioning and instead have ceiling fans.
It seems to be a place that older South Africans go year after year, and the daily activities that were listed made us feel like we were in Butlins (eg, Bingo on the terrace...)
The setting is beautiful however the hotel is a long way from any restaurants or bars / cafes which, although close, are not really walkable due to the hotel being at the bottom of a steep hill... unless you are super fit you will need to drive everywhere.

A greay place to stay, it can be as quiet or as hectic as you like. Lot's of alternative food options. Lovely views and staff always so helpfull.
Have never experience anything like that of the people from Vancoover, it must have been school holiday time when they were there -so what would you expect, kid are kids everywhere. When yiour kids leave home you don't choose kids weeks.
Lot's of places of inetrest to visit around, take car if venturing on a dolphin experience trip - it can be rough sea even when it looks calm.
We always rent a week from some timeshare owner who can not use it themselves.
