“Amazing- whales outside your window!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2010

We shortlisted the top 5 hotels in Plett Bay from tripadvisor before making the trip; Beacon Island was 6th I think, but I wrote it down anyway. I'm so glad I did! For about R1000 we secured ourselves a double room (with sofa bed) facing the sea, the most luscious bed and pillows, room service and front row seats to the whales!

I have nothing bad to say about this place. Amazing location- you can't get closer to the water than this. We saw whales jumping out of the water and playing around right in front of our window, which was better than the lone whale that we saw in Hermanus the next day (or was I already jaded?).

The only thing they could have done to improve the place was to offer a buffet breakfast in the sea lounge, where you could then eat to your hearts' content while watching these beautiful creatures while soaking up the sun. Instead they only do a la carte breakfast in an indoor cafe. We got round this problem by ordering room service!

Plett Bay is so full of hotels and B&Bs, but I think Beacon Island deserves No. 1 at least for location if not for everything else.

A two night stop over on a hectic two week schedule.
The Beacon Island Resort is just what it says. It's a resort, not a hotel. It's basically time share/call it what you like, but is run as a holiday resort.
The rooms are small but well used. Double bed, small bathroom.
The hotel amenities are excellent. The restaurants are good. There is no charging facility, so carry a card or cash at all times. A tad unusual but it is a resort style property. The restaurants are all run independently from the hotel itself.
As it is a resort, there is an arrival and departure day, which is a bit hectic if you get caught up in it, but the people who were on a resort package really enjoyed the group theme and there was a lot for them to get involved with, both grown ups and children.
As we were independent travellers, we really wanted it as a base to explore the area.
The location is superb. Set out on a rock on the Indian ocean with 360 views. Lovely grounds and swimming pool.
Plettenberg is a small town with a village like atmosphere, shops, bars and a few good restaurants. A few very expensive ones and the odd poor one!
A short drive away is Knysna, with the quays, and the superb views from Knysna heads. The whole area seems to be the in place to be for SA people with a good income to come to for some R & R and it's really very nice.

My wife and I stayed at the Beacon Isle for 5 nights. The hotel is located right alongside the stunning beaches and has the ocean on 3 sides. Great for listening to the waves in bed. Good pools, gym and facilities (including secure parking). Three onsite restaurants and bars are above average for a hotel.

Room was a good size, nice bedding, king size bed and 100% of rooms have an ocean / beach view. Small fridge too.

You do need a car - it is not an easy walk to other restaurants in the centre of town (away from the beach). But this is the best location by far! Having a beer in the bar with waves crashing on the windows is unbeatable (although the crowd isn't always the coolest).

A great resort for anyone looking to relax on the beaches / see the local area. We used timeshare which made it great value for us - peak hotel rates here can be very high.

Wow, what a magnificent place! We have lived in Europe for 6 years and travelled widely including the States. I have yet to see such a perfect spot. The views and sea lounge will stay with me for a long time. Pure luxury to be served drinks while staff carry your lounge chair and umbrella to the 180 degree sea view. Enjoyed the music and Karoake evenings and children enjoyed the indoor heated pool and games. Where else can you walk for kilometers on beautiful, unspoilt beaches? Or watch the sun set over a picnic at nearby Robberg Nature reserve while the seals bark in the water below? Only negative, found the rooms small and had to get two for our family as the rooms only sleep 4.

When driving on the N2 towards Plettenberg Bay from Port Elizabeth you will suddenly see from far a big white graceful building through the trees. This very hotspot of romance and elegance is the Beacon Island Hotel. For South Africans this is also a time share hotel of a popular hotel group. The hotel has been upgraded over the past year and this is evident in the new foyer, restaurant area and gym. The rooms are airy and light and a beautiful ocean view with a mountain back drop is guaranteed if you have a pool side room, especially in the winter. All pool side rooms are north facing, whereas the Robberg side might be a bit cold in the winter. The rest of the hotel has a very stylish interior and there is always an entertainment and kiddies programme. The fabulous view from the sitting room is stunning and sipping coffee here will wind down all the stress of life. One thing of the Beacon Island that makes it special is the fact that it’s standing gracefully on its own on a rocky piece of land that gives it a feeling of total remoteness, although sitting in the middel of Plettenberg Bay. A real traveller’s treat!

Lovely time to be had, this is our 2nd time. It's been beautifully renovated. Great food and good service. Location cannot be better, on the rocks.

My husband and I were married on Saturday, October 11, 2008, and we set off for an adventure to South Africa. We have a timeshare through RCI and decided to exchange our Aruba unit for a destination in South Africa. We really wanted to have an adventure and go somewhere out of the ordinary. Well we were not disappointed.

The first thing you will notice about Beacon Island is the amazing views. We couldnt believe how the resort literally sat almost IN the water. Every room has a great view so you cant go wrong. We will in a "hotel" room- no kitchen, which was fine. The room was a little small- but this was really a non-issue since we didnt spend much time in the room anyway. The window was the full lenght of the wall and we would look out every morning at the ocean and see the sun come up.

Resturants: There were three resturants at the hotel. We had breakfast every morning and the wait staff was great. They were very helpful and eager to please. The food is cheap. We are from the United States and the dollar was trading very high in relation to the Rand. We were getting 11 Rand for each Dollar. The Euro was trading even higher. We did venture out to a couple of resturants: LM - wonderful food and lots of it. The locals are very nice and helpful as well. Love the local "pap." Just ask for it.

The beach is nice- but during the 7 days we were at Beacon Island the water was rough. No worries, there is an excellent pool.

You definitely need a car to get a good sense of the area. We rented one from the airport - reservation made online before we arrived and we had no problems. We also rented a GPS and cellphone- all very cheap.

There are lots of activities that you can sign up for and the staff will assist. We went to the elephant santuary- cant miss. Monkey Santuary- fun and Birds Santuary- just okay (not too into birds). We also went to the Plenttenburg Bay Safari. Not too bad. Saw rhino, hippo, lions, garaffi, zebra, croc, etc.

Also, I am a spa girl and the prices for spa services are VERY CHEAP. I had three treatments and the service was wonderful.

Yes, it is true there is an older crowd here. We were there 10/18 -10/24 but it is my understanding that if you come there when school is out- there are TONS of kids there. The older crowd didnt bother us. We had fun with it. There was some entertainment- singing, bingo, game night and some karoke. Just enjoy yourself you are on VACATION. When the staff found out we were there for our honeymoon, they sent a bottle of champagne to our room. Very sweet.

My vote, give Beacon Island a try.
